Having said that, it is surprising that Toto Coelo didn't have more success when you compare them to the 5 piece girl group that came 14 years after them. I guess it's all down to timing and marketing. (BTW their performance was good but the song was nothing special.)

Just watched the Haysi Fantayzee performance and it is incredible how they got away with that at 7.30 on a Thursday evening!! Also checked out the lyrics. Sorry to be too technical but there is no evidence it was about what has previously been suggested, it could well have just been doggy style!

Sulk's the masterpiece where it all comes together. Don't neglect all the solo stuff especially the tracks with Yello.

If you've never heard it, take my advice and do NOT ever play their version of Heart of Glass - It's nearly enough to make you turn your back on them altogether.

Toto Coelo didn't sound to me like a group who were going to have a lasting career. "I Eat Cannibals" appeared strictly like a novelty song. Not that all novelty songs are bad, of course, but if the follow up sounds anything like the same, the novelty has already begun to lose its shine. There wasn't enough with Toto Coelo, for me, to suggest they were going to stay around (no strong individual voice like Jennie from The Belle Stars, for example). I wasn't keen on their image either, although to be fair far worse songs and visual performances have been included in the charts, and especially in more recent years. The Boys Town Gang were probably a whole lot worse, too, musically and in terms of presentation. It wasn't just the guys i found irritating. The female singer looked a little off somehow, and like she'd just stepped off a cruise ship, but worst of all, the rendition of the song itself sounded like that too.

I agree with your earlier point too, about the unnnecessary use of crudeness etc. within the lyrics of the likes of Hayzi Fantayzee. I used to feel that way about Lou Reed's 'Street Hassle' album. I loved the title track, ''Street Hassle", which Simple Minds did a cover version of, but i felt embarrassed playing it to anybody, because it may have suggested i had a kinky mind! I love the creativity of an artist like Lou, but the vulgarity at times could be a turn off. I suppose with Lou it was always about breaking down barriers, although sometimes i'd rather they stay up!

Plus I would add Natasha (of Iko Iko fame) to the pile of Trashy performances together with Toto Coelo, and also throw in our 1984 Eurovision entry for good measure too. All 3 acts seem to be cut from the same unfashionable cloth!

When you compare the youth of the early 80s to the youth of today - there was no internet to browse, sex was rarely seen on TV except for the odd late night film, there was little or no sex education in schools & the only time you read about it in magazines were if you were able to reach up to the top shelf (which very few people under about 5 ft 5 could actually do)!

However today there seems almost like a perversion people have in looking for the unsavoury, which wasn't there back in the early eighties. I think it may be part of human nature to have sex on the brain a little, but i believe with some people, they actually get a real kick out of looking out for it. Some may see themselves as guardians of the nation, but it gets monotonous to have to keep listening to who's a potential paedophile etc, and looking for ulterior motives in everything. Back in 1982, still not many of us had video recorders, and the Hayzi Fantayzee performance would have been over almost within the blink of an eye, with no chance of going back to mull over what might be lurking within. I'm not sure many of the viewers would have been that bothered anyway, even if they had latched onto the finer details.

It always amuses me how countries abroad like in Scandanavia, just seem to take it all for granted as part of the norm. There is always the 'British post card' type humour about it in this country!

Yes, there is a fine line to be drawn in being aware of the potential dangers, but not wallowing in all the various ramifications every action has the potential to take. Savile shook everyone up, but there has to be a balanced outlook. I had a neighbour who was a teacher during his working life, and i used to take him shopping in around 1998, when he was in his early nineties. He said back then he would have felt very awkward if he was still teaching younger children, because he was aware of how his innocent actions may have been interpreted wrongly. Teachers, and especially those who are male, perhaps feel these days more vunerable.
