Chicago seem to have been 'bubbling under' for weeks now. 'Hard to say I'm sorry' would eventually be a big hit for them.
Love the Liquid Gold single - so different to their usual fare. Supposedly written for Hot Chocolate who turned it down. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wh7R-Amr5r0 Also like Carly Simon 'Why' and Fashion's 'Love Shadow'. |

I absolutely love 'Why' by Carly Simon. It was featured in the flop film 'Soup For One'. The soundtrack was produced (and largely written, including 'Why') by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. From memory, re-releases and remixes aside, it was the last hit for the Chic Organisation.
I also liked 'Love Shadow' by Fashion. It was one of the tracks on a compilation album I bought back in October 1982 called 'Modern Heroes'. It wasn't the most successful of compilation albums - peaking at number 24 on the Album charts in mid October 1982 - and is most likely largely unknown but I thought it was a great album https://www.discogs.com/Various-Mode...release/335849

I had Friday's edition listed as one I'd already got, but when I managed to dig it out to watch, instead of staying up late to watch the unedited edition on BBC Four, it turned out that whoever had recorded it decided just to record Yazoo The Associates and Haysi Fantazee. So a lot of it hadn't see before it which was good. Having seen it all, I'm scoring it a eight out of ten.
Okay the lyrics are ridiculous and they looked ridiculous, but I do like Toto Coelo's I Eat Cannibal. A fun way to kick off the show. I'm sure there's a later performance of this that seems to get shown more. Totally agreed with John's comments re Yazoo. Nice to see another studio performance from them of Don't Go. I'd have said that Vince's haircut would be the worst we'd see on these TOTP 82 repeats if I didn't know we'd be seeing that guy from A Flock Of Segulls soon! My highlight of the show was definitely the Boysgtown Gang's Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You. It definitely takes me back to the summer of 1982 and it was obviously this version that inspired The Pet Shop Boys cover. Great vocal from Jackson Moore. Did the two guys actually sing on any of their other records? I'd rate the Associates' 18 Carat Love Affair below Club Country (why didn't they call it Country Club?) but above Party Fears Two. I still don't think I'll ever get the obsession there is with them on this thread, though. I didn't take much notice of the chocolate guitar on first viewing. It's always good to rewatch a edition after reading comments on here on things you might have missed. I couldn't really remember Sheena Easton's Machinery, even though I will have heard it before. I'm liking it better, after a few listens, than I did at first. I take it from John's comment that he wasn't a fan of her big Bond theme of the previous year. After all the comments I had to carefully re-watch Haysi Fantazee's performance of John Wayne Is Big Legge. Most of the lyrics are indeciperable but I will take everyone's word for it that it is rude. Yes there was a few suggestive moves, but the Zoo dancers have definitely done worse in their routines. The most interesting performance for me was Wavelength's Hurry Home as I knew the song but had absolutely no idea what the group looked. It is a nice song, but if I hadn't known I would've said this was from about 1978. Again another annoying Zoo performance - this time with some acrobats getting in on the act. Okay so BIg Fun wasn't one of Kool And The Gang's most stand-out hits, but it was just treated as an afterthought and you could hardly hear it at times with all the whooping and clapping. Summertime, more like snooze time as far as I'm concerned. Don't like the song and this version just seem to drag on and on. Someone compared this to Sting doing a cover of Spread a Little Happiness. Now that is awesome and I'm gutted it is yewtreed. At least thy followed it with something a lot more jolly. Shame the Firm weren't back to do a new performance of Arthur Daley E's Alright, but didn't mind seeing the repeat again. It seemed like John was so sick of Come On Eileen he couldn't bear to even say the title! Surely they had the video to show by this point, so I'm not sure why they showed a repeat studio performance instead. |

Just checked out 'Hard Times' by the Human League from above album. I've never heard this track before. It is quite simplistic but by the end of the track I was beginning to make a connection. Obviously the words 'Hard times' feature in the lyrics to 'Love Action'. A pleasant discovery.

The track was originally the B side to 'Love Action' and subsequently was remixed and appeared on the Human League remix album 'Love And Dancing' (which was credited to The League Unlimited Orchestra). I can't remember which version appeared on 'Modern Heroes' though I'm guessing from the credit it is probably the 1981 original. 'Love And Dancing' was at number 4 on the Albums chart "this week" (14 August, matching the TOTP week featured on Friday) in 1982.

Only 1 TOTP this forthcoming week I see but the line-up does seem to feature a number of songs which we have not seen before. Also David Jensen is again the presenter. Twice in 3 weeks? Or have we missed a Yew-treed edition somewhere?

From the Kid Jensen Edition, the US JK Chart Selection was edited as follows, somewhat annoyingly as the first three are excellent, the last one not so much..
(US 12) THE GO GO’S – Vacation (video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RHTiXvELNg (US 9) THE MOTELS – Only The Lonely (video) Not the Orbison one! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaPTELylZ1s (US 4) FLEETWOOD MAC – Hold Me (video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezRluiaRBgg (US 1) SURVIVOR – Eye Of The Tiger (video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btPJPFnesV4 |

At number 30 this week are David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto with the double A side Bamboo Music / Bamboo Houses. I was hoping they might have appeared on Top of the Pops but I think they fall back next week. I'd be interested to know what people think of the tracks:
Bamboo Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_u6bmagKNfc Bamboo Houses: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdIoUeyR1_E I think I would have preferred these two to have got to number 9 in the charts instead of I Second That Emotion. |

I bought this Donna single on 12 inch at the time. Didn't play it very often though and didn't put it on my pod either , so I really enjoyed it this week. At the time you could buy 12 inch version of singles for 99p in Edinburgh so I dully boosted my 12 inch collection. I also bought Donna's next single for 99p on 12 inch but had to pay the full whack for the remixed 'I feel love' later in the year.
But I remember other independent record shops in Leeds selling 12" singles from other labels for 99p - 'Magic's Wand' by Whodini and 'Planet Rock' by Africa Bambaataa among them. |

And the B side to the 12" consists of dubs of both tracks - part of the genesis of the Love And Dancing album? |

I have to agree. Carly Simon's ''Why'' is one of the best tracks of 1982. It was a fine collaboration between Carly, and Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards.

It states that Scritti Politti had previously been No.25 with their latest single - yet Junior had been No.25 in the chart rundown I just watched.
Typo? |

Totally agreed with John's comments re Yazoo. Nice to see another studio performance from them of Don't Go. I'd have said that Vince's haircut would be the worst we'd see on these TOTP 82 repeats if I didn't know we'd be seeing that guy from A Flock Of Segulls soon!
I disagree with those who are knocking The Associates. For me, even with ''18 Carat Love Affair'', which i believe to be an ill suited single release, the arrangements, and Billy's voice is always very interesting, because those songs don't go for the obvious, or some stereotypical type arrangements. They are challenging, and very different to the norm (and especially for the generally more conservative sounds of 82). However, i do feel that it is very much ''Party Fears Two'', which has been their standout single release. |
