I had Friday's edition listed as one I'd already got, but when I managed to dig it out to watch, instead of staying up late to watch the unedited edition on BBC Four, it turned out that whoever had recorded it decided just to record Yazoo The Associates and Haysi Fantazee. So a lot of it hadn't see before it which was good. Having seen it all, I'm scoring it a eight out of ten.
Okay the lyrics are ridiculous and they looked ridiculous, but I do like Toto Coelo's I Eat Cannibal. A fun way to kick off the show. I'm sure there's a later performance of this that seems to get shown more.
Totally agreed with John's comments re Yazoo. Nice to see another studio performance from them of Don't Go. I'd have said that Vince's haircut would be the worst we'd see on these TOTP 82 repeats if I didn't know we'd be seeing that guy from A Flock Of Segulls soon!
My highlight of the show was definitely the Boysgtown Gang's Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You. It definitely takes me back to the summer of 1982 and it was obviously this version that inspired The Pet Shop Boys cover. Great vocal from Jackson Moore. Did the two guys actually sing on any of their other records?
I'd rate the Associates' 18 Carat Love Affair below Club Country (why didn't they call it Country Club?) but above Party Fears Two. I still don't think I'll ever get the obsession there is with them on this thread, though. I didn't take much notice of the chocolate guitar on first viewing. It's always good to rewatch a edition after reading comments on here on things you might have missed.
I couldn't really remember Sheena Easton's Machinery, even though I will have heard it before. I'm liking it better, after a few listens, than I did at first. I take it from John's comment that he wasn't a fan of her big Bond theme of the previous year.
After all the comments I had to carefully re-watch Haysi Fantazee's performance of John Wayne Is Big Legge. Most of the lyrics are indeciperable but I will take everyone's word for it that it is rude. Yes there was a few suggestive moves, but the Zoo dancers have definitely done worse in their routines.
The most interesting performance for me was Wavelength's Hurry Home as I knew the song but had absolutely no idea what the group looked. It is a nice song, but if I hadn't known I would've said this was from about 1978.
Again another annoying Zoo performance - this time with some acrobats getting in on the act. Okay so BIg Fun wasn't one of Kool And The Gang's most stand-out hits, but it was just treated as an afterthought and you could hardly hear it at times with all the whooping and clapping.
Summertime, more like snooze time as far as I'm concerned. Don't like the song and this version just seem to drag on and on. Someone compared this to Sting doing a cover of Spread a Little Happiness. Now that is awesome and I'm gutted it is yewtreed.
At least thy followed it with something a lot more jolly. Shame the Firm weren't back to do a new performance of Arthur Daley E's Alright, but didn't mind seeing the repeat again.
It seemed like John was so sick of Come On Eileen he couldn't bear to even say the title! Surely they had the video to show by this point, so I'm not sure why they showed a repeat studio performance instead.
