Following a 'catch up' type read back, a few random thoughts in keeping with recent discussions...

Carly Simon's 'Why' - Meh, well its a perfectly pleasant and enjoyable song but IMO doesn't quite deserve the seemingly unequivocal praise bestowed upon it by the majority of you 'TOTP'ers'.

Blondie's 'Island Of Lost Souls'. I like it! Yes, I'll admit that compared to their previous quality song highlights of the previous years, that, it doesn't quite cut it to the same degree does it. I don't think it's a bad song though. I think we were just spoiled by what they'd came up with over the previous few years.
And as a ps on all that. Personally I'd rather listen to that Blondie song (or for that matter The Associates cover of Blondie's 'Heart Of Glass') over the Carly song every day of the week! There's controversial no doubt!

Haysi Fantayzee's debut performance. (Which I've only just seen). Bit of a mixture of all that isn't it! I'm totally surprised they got away with that, but good on 'em.
I really liked them back then and thought they released 3 or 4 very good singles. But, a completely p*ss poor album (which I regretfully bought back then during its first week of release). Have to say that debut performance was pretty awful though, I'm sure they do a better one if we hopefully get to see it in due course.

And finally. Tomorrow's line up looks good!!!

When you wake up at three in the morning on a long dark November night it's probably not the best thing to do to put on the long ten minute version of the brilliant Boystown Gang's Can't Take My Eyes Off You if you want to get back for a decent rest of the night's sleep. But I stuck it on my headphones to myself and now I'm alert. At least I didn't have to endure 10 minutes of the visuals for this song that were seen last week on TOTP!

No, i didn't misunderstand what you wrote Rich Tea. However, the wording came over slightly like you were having a dig at Madonna in your association, in saying "Islands Of Lost Soul" wasn't very good, and you wasn't surprised it was career ending etc, and i was just trying to clarify my point. Not that Madonna hasn't received the odd dig off me too from time to time! Sorry to make the comparison again, because i know you only intended it to be a very loose association, but i think the comparison is interesting all the same. For me, although i think "La Isla Bonita" is the much more commercial song, which works much more effectively as a single release, i still have a dislike for that late eighties type slightly tinny and artificial production sound. I certainly find the overall 'sound' of "Islands Of Lost Souls" to be preferable, as it has more warmth.

Thanks for the information relating to those ticket prices, and choice of venue, The Stables. It sounds very interesting. I would definitely be there if it was local to me. I wouldn't mind seeing Elkie Brooks, especially, but i would hope she wouldn't sing "Nights In White Satin"! All of those prices at least sound affordable, and some are also very reasonable! The Robin near me is where i have been going, which is reasonable too, and i have to say also, some of the tribute acts have been amongst my favourites, and especially TRextasy. I think it is great especially that the younger generation get the chance to at least get a taste of what those old acts had to offer, even if it is not the genuine article they are seeing. Some of those tribute acts are very good indeed. Also even for those acts that are still around, but who's ticket prices are extortunate, the tribute bands at least offer an alternative, and often a fun night out.

Nile Rodgers excellent guitar playing is all over Kid Creole's album 'Tropical Gangsters' lp from 82 most notably the hits 'I'm A Wonderful Thing Baby' & 'Stool Pigeon'. His sound is unmistakable & it's what gives those 2 songs their groove IMO. Did anyone have this Kid Creole album? It did well in the year end album listings and deservedly so! OK, so it was a bit novelty in parts but the musicianship & funkiness is second-to-none! I love a bit of Tropical Funk, me!

I bought Tropical Gangsters too and love it - but it's a bit of shift from the previous Kid Creole & The Coconuts albums … probably because it was originally conceived as an August Darnell solo album, but then adapted for the group, in a bid to rescue their record label, Ze, which was in financial trouble.

Ze was the height of hip in 1981, with its Mutant Disco compilation - but the label could not transform its massive critical acclaim into sales until Tropical Gangsters blew up in 1982. But the group couldn't sustain its success and Ze closed down two years later.

I saw Elkie Brooks at the Harlow Playhouse recently and would definitely a recommend the trip to see her. I don't recall if she sung NIWS but I would suspect yes, but with a better arrangement now. During the concert she called out an audience member for filming her. Okay, some of us do this but not in front of the artist, with the flash on! 🙄

BIB - The stock replies I've come to expect from people who approve of this sort of thing in TV ads tend to be along the lines of 'Lighten up', 'Where's your sense of humour?', 'Get a Life' or 'You take things too seriously' - but if I had used the term 'spastics' (common parlance when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s) in place of 'disabled women' in my original post those same people would probably throw a hissy fit.
