Presumably the better known video hadn't been recorded as yet. Yet again, an example of how US record companies really were well behind the curve when it came to music videos

Did David Jensen say that was the real Eddie Calvert performing with them on stage? I remember this link from 1982 and I couldn't figure out what he said then and couldn't figure it out now.

Both Haircut 100 and Modern Romance soon to lose their lead singer after tonight's show.

I thought it was the least commercial Thomas Dolby single from this period. Europa and the Pirate Twins and She Blinded Me With Science were much stronger as singles. The former was particularly wonderful whilst the latter became a big US hit.

I was confused by that as well. It was the way he phrased it. He said:
"But we kick off with Modern Romance with the original golden horn of the legendary Eddie Clavert, performing Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White."
I knew it was John Du Prez that played trumpet in Modern Romance. He maybe meant John was playing Eddie's trumpet. They'd have had to dig Eddie up as he'd died back in 1978!

Yep, I was sure 'tash man' from Modern Romance had disappeared by the time we got to the later Modern Romance hits.

Love is like Oxygen is a forgotten classic. A rock /pop classic. Something unique about its overall sound and a superb rock vocal.

I think in terms of songwriting it's their absolute best, and the song is actually enhanced by the lush production - and the video! A piece of pop perfection.

Now Simon Le Bon isn't the best singer but this is a good vocal. You feel the emotion in his voice and his voice has a nice dark quality when he is singing the low notes.

a week or so late, but I adored seeing Alison moyet singing Don't Go in the studio last week. Possibly my favourite 80s song of all. As Soft Cell always knew, you can sing a pop uber masterpiece in two and a half minutes, that's all you need...

Just caught up with the 730.

Note the editing on Kid's final link, to remove mention of DLT presenting the next show.

One Of Our Submarines isn't bad either. He also played keyboards on Waiting For A Girl Like You by Foreigner which was one of the biggest selling singles of the 1980s in the United States.

Really? Well I'm not surprised he kept that quiet.

Another fan here of 'Love is like Oxygen', although the veterans amongst you may remember me saying that on the 1978 thread too, at the time!

I'm informed that the video tapes (4) weren't alligned which causes the banding effect

The sound was also awful on EoTT as it was overlaid with the film.

Apart from that I enjoyed tonight's edition of TOTP then the disco at the Beeb and Prince hour.

PS the sequins that sparkled so much used to damage the camera tubes.

It's a brilliant record. I've just had to go to and play it. What a great song!

It's so sad to watch Brian Connolly at the end of his days. It makes me cry to watch him playing at Butlins when he can barely walk. So sad.

That would've been as part of the 'Don't Leave Me This Way' documentary I think. Very sad indeed and for my money a bit of a stitch up job on Brian.

Got back to my hotel just in time to miss most of the awful Kids From Fame and can now watch the rest of the episode that I missed earlier!

Talk Talk and Thomas Dolby. 2 synthpop acts that had far bigger success abroad than at home. Talk Talk were huge when I lived in Germany in the mid 80s.

I think Talk Talk have achieved something remarkable, in that I can't find a single negative comment on Twitter about "Today".

Marc was very brave to go with the sharply upwards key change - and just about pulls it off!

Mmm, "just" being the key word there. For me that's makes it all the more appealing though.

Very good edition that one. I stick by my earlier 9/10. Kids From Fame, or whatever they were called and were edited from the early edition really were quite dire to my taste. Captains Sensible 'Wot', also edited, don't love or hate it, just alright. Rest of that show though, pretty good.
