Things sometimes have a way of running full circle eventually. David Jensen is long passed being a 'Kid', but arguably his golden years as a broadcaster was when he was still using that nickname. As one gets older, and the clock ticks, it is often the younger people's turn for a look in. So much has changed in recent decades, some things for the better, but not always exclusively so. I am sure David realises there is a certain nostalgia now in hearing his voice, and hearing his familiar 'Kid' name. Many find in a world where so much appears to have altered, and especially also in the world of pop, it is reassuring to still be able to hear a familiar voice that takes them back to another time.

I hope the likes of David Jensen, Tony Blackburn and Johnnie Walker, etc. have a few good years left in them. I am not sure how much they truly like to trade on that element of nostalgia attached to their names, because it does imply rather, that their best days are long gone. That, though, is the inevitability of such longevity. They are still delivering some great programmes.

While I remember the Falklands war being months after this was in the charts, I'm a bit too young to remember for how long previously the conflict had been building up before it actually got the that stage to know if there could be any credibility to the claim. I'm guessing not.

Well the Falklands Crisis, as it was called at first before hostilities finally began, started on Friday 2nd April 1982. I recall it so very well because my Easter holiday had begun the day before and I'd travelled down to stay at my grandparents. Waking up to that news on their permanently tuned Radio 4 the following day. It was a real gift for the gab for my grandad, an ex Royal Marine in World War II and he got really talkative about the whole crisis during my week with them. He loved talking military and war things and stuff from overseas. He came alive that week. We'd sit at 6pm listening to the Big Ben bongs of the Radio 4 news and begin eating while hearing the latest. The memory is so very strong.

The only inklings that there might be trouble were in late March when there was an incident on nearby South Georgia if I recall correctly, to do with Argentina. But it effectively blew up out of nowhere and caught everyone off guard that 2nd April. Was it really a coincidence that Ebony & Ivory - "living together in perfect harmony" and also A Little Peace became No1 hits during the conflict? A Little Peace winning Eurovision in the UK at the very time the task force was sailing down there. Ironic it was a German entry in a way.

Clare I was highly amused that you thought such a poppy tune as Haircut 100's Love Plus One could be about something like the Falklands War. Whatever gave you that idea in the first place?

I've no idea where I saw or heard it mentioned - it's certainly not anything I've read into the lyrics myself. If you google the song and Falklands war there are other people asking if its true or not. I wouldn't be surprised if it was Smash Hits!
What I remember about the Falklands war is that it ended while I was on a family holiday in Devon and at the end of the week we went back home on a train that was full of sailors who'd just arrived back in the UK.

Split Enz just missed the top 75 in the summer of 83 with Six Months in a Leaky Boat, a very poppy tune supposedly about the Falklands Conflict.

'Glad It's All Over' by Captain Sensible (co-written by Tony Mansfield of New Musik and The Nick Straker Band) which made number 6 two years later in 1984 was another pop song about the Falklands War.


I expect we'll be seeing Lol Mason on TOTP 1982 in December singing lead vocals with The Maisonettes on 'Heartache Avenue'.


It always used to niggle me when football commentators used the expression 'Hat Trick' when a player scored three goals in a match. I believe the term is applied more loosely nowadays but I did read several decades ago that the feat is only classed as a hat trick when the goals are scored consecutively and no others have been scored in between by either side. So while it is true that in 1966 Geoff Hurst became the first man to score three goals in a World Cup Final, by strict definition it was never a hat trick as three goals by other players were scored between his opening goal and his third in the dying minutes of the game.

You've mentioned two absolute beauties of singles above Fave St. Adore them both immensely and they have both had recent plays by me. Infact, and I'm not kidding for effect here, I played that Maisonettes track three times in a row, or a hatrick, just about six weeks ago. Nicely retro but still 80's too.

I know Simon Bates didn't actually use the word "hatrick" himself incase my original post makes it look like I think he did, but he clearly stated that Shaky has had "three consecutive No1's". All he had to say was "three No1's" which was impressive in less than a year, so I'm bemused why he dropped the word "consecutive" into it. Mind you, why am I caring so much about it 34 years later!

Don't suppose anyone knows if Run To The Hills by Iron Maiden will appear on totp? I believe it came out in 1982.

Hufflestuff, Iron Maiden's Run To The Hills video was shown on TOTP in February 1982. You won't see it though, it was on DLT's edition. I think that was the only showing on the programme.

BBC presenter Chris Evans is now the latest to be facing police questioning after allegations of historic sex assault are being claimed by someone he worked with. So will he be instantly DLT'ed out of the picture? Why do I rather think not for some reason.

That reminds me of the time I went to a UNISON quiz night and the quizmaster (known for being a tosser) asked "Who are the only Scottish band to have had 3 consecutive UK number 1 hits?"

I said i didn't think there was one but went for Bay City Rollers as a guess thinking he'd ballsed up the question.

Th answer given was Wet Wet Wet. When I queried it with him he got a book out and said they had 3 number ones, in 1988, 1992 and 1995. I asked how these were consecutive when they had released singles in between. He said "yes, but the number 1s were consecutive". I called him a ****ing idiot and was then threatened with ban from future quizzes

Hi Andy, I started that at about 12.30am, thought it would take an hour or so. Only did it to push myself and test the limits of DS posting, which I came up against. My original post was a 66 post multiquote. However when it came to submitting it I wasn't allowed as I had too many characters. The limit is apparently 20,000 so I had to begin cutting away. That meant losing most of your two amusing show posts that I replied to, losing a few thousand characters. It was bright daylight when I finally finished. Was it worth it? Not really to be honest.

Politics overtook me during the past couple of weeks on DS. Once you get into the cut and thrust on that forum it's hard to escape, especially in the current climate. I don't know about anyone else on here but I can't help but think it's going to feel like getting a bit of the 1980's back when we get another woman Prime Minister shortly. I'll grab at any straws to try and reclaim that era back to some degree. Wales beating Belgium, home of the EU bureaucracy had a good ring to it. Good luck to them.

I must confess I was dewy-eyed when the National anthem was sung by the Welsh fans, 'bendegedig' (wonderful) doesn't even begin to describe the pride felt, and even if the team get no further God forbid (and it will be tough), for me they've won the singing competition hands down. Stirring and passionate in equal measure.

The news feed from Cardiff was hilarious when the 2nd/3rd goal went in, the amount of beer that went airborne in a single instant could've filled an olympic-sized swimming pool. Beer shampoos all round whether or not you needed one!

I noticed a few posters wishing the team well so a 'diolch yn fawr iawn' from Wales back to you, it's much appreciated

I know about the De La Soul sample from 1989, but no I was talking about the original. It got to number one in the United States unlike the other bands you mention so was more influential. I think it does have a hip-hop feel to it, even if it's very slight, with the intro in particular with the bass and synths, and later on with the vocal style.

I know what you mean with political debate at the moment.

It's a particularly nasty rabbit hole and one that I'm trying to steer well clear of as it only ends up in argument, even amongst the most placid of people.

There's so much backstabbing & point scoring taking place it's not surprising the electorate are heartily sick of the Westminster/Brussels lot. I find it extraordinary the amount of argy-bargy between close families regarding the EU vote & I think if there hadn't been as much doom-mongering & down right damned lies & spin, the electorate wouldn't have felt they needed to exercise what boiled down to a protest vote rightly or wrongly, but this argument is for a different forum so I'll leave it there (and to protect my sanity!)

Yes, in the climate we are in at the moment, i'd imagine Chris Evans could prove an easy target. To be fair i wouldn't put much past him, and for me, his talent often seems to be suffocated by his own still overbearing ego, which tends to overshadow however good he has the capacity to be. There are brief moments i have found a likeability within Chris, but they haven't existed beyond a flicker. I think it it possible to be self confident, but i don't think that necessarily has to equate to appearing arrogant. He's a huge bully, make no mistake, and if that includes him also being a sexual menace, i'd imagine few would be surprised.

I often wonder what drives certain individuals to have the capacity to be so immodest and totally full of themselves. Is it their upbringing?

Finally caught up with Friday's edition of The Craig Fairbrass Show. I was worried that Craig might have been absent (off at an audition, maybe), but then up he popped for Alton Edwards' performance, obviously having been furiously practising his spins, which he then implemented constantly … and then, at the end, in a hilarious dance-off with one of Kelly Marie's backing dancers, who seemed to adopt some kind of kung fu jump to try and outdo Craig's by now dizzying spins.

Other highlights for me were ONJ's video, very obviously directed by someone who'd either also worked on (or at least repeatedly watched) many 1981 new romantic videos (Ultravox, Duran Duran, Visage); Zoo's appalling timing during their 'Golden Brown' routine which made Legs & Co look technically perfect; and, perhaps most terrifying of all, Elkie Brooks' grey leather (or were they pleather?) trousers ... a true 80s fashion horror, if ever there was one!

I'm currently watching Jeff Lynne and ELO at Glastonbury - what a brilliant performance!

Although seemingly not liked by many posters here at DS, ELO's 'Ticket To The Moon' is quite excellent. It's a great song. I even like Zoo's performance to the song.
