What's happened with Rich Tea? He is still posting at DS but seems to have stopped posting in this thread. Has he vanished for good from the TOTP thread I wonder.

1982 was an OK year, but no way would I call it vintage.
There are still a few exceptional songs about, mind! |

I'd imagine he's compiling the Mother of all multi-quotes that'll make 'War & Peace' look like a flyer from your local take-away! 😎

Top 5 - 1982
1. The Jam - Town Called Malice/Precious (same as a 14 year old and at 48 )2. Kid Creole - Annie I'm not your Daddy (bought it at the time) 3. Monsoon - Ever so Lonely (probably wouldn't have put it in then, but am as a result of watching the repeats). 4. Wham! - Young Guns (for the impact on their first TOTP performance, plus I bought the Fantastic album the following year) 5. Shalamar - Night to Remember (loved it at the time, and I don't think it has dated all that badly - good representative of dance/"disco" track of the era. |

I bought 'Let Me Go' at the time, loved that single. It almost made the top 40, stopping short by just one place.
I bought 4 of the first 5 singles that Heaven 17 released (all in 1981 and 1982), none of them made the top 40. The only one I didn't buy is the totally forgotten 'I'm Your Money'. I can't even remember that one. With 'Temptation' they seemed to decide to move in a more commercial direction, presumably to actually have a decent sized hit. I can remember an interview the band did with The Face magazine in 1981 or 1982 where they seemed to be very dismissive almost to the point of jealousy at the success their former bandmate was having with his version of The Human League. Indeed, they came over as sounding bitter that Virgin Records were pouring more money in to promoting the League ahead of themselves. Given that at least The Human League were having more success with a more commercial sound it's no surprise that Virgin were bankrolling them more. Heaven 17 were another act that I saw drinking in a pub when I was living in Notting Hill in 1987. They were often seen drinking in a pub called the Slug & Lettuce (a very 80s sounding name for a pub!) in Ladbroke Grove. As that pub was just around the corner from the Sarm West studios (owned by Trevor Horn and where Band Aid's single was recorded and filmed in 1984) and seeing as they released an album a few months later I assume they were busy recording that album at the time. By then their chart days seemed to be over, which remixes in the early 90s aside, it was. I can half understand why Heaven 17 might have been bitter about The Human League's success - Penthouse And Pavement is a brilliant album and, for me, their best work. Having said that, as I understand it, Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh benefitted financially from the success of Dare!, under the terms of the agreement that allowed Phil Oakey and Adrian Wright to keep The Human League name … so they shouldn't have been that bitter! |

I got the 5 album box set of Heaven 17 albums.
I want to get the Level 42 and Aha ones as well. But I have Hunting High and Low as a 24bit download which sounds great. |

A few thoughts on the Mike Smith episode, which I watched this afternoon.
The Hall & Oates performance looked like a studio performance, but not in the TOTP studio. It would have been interesting if they had been in the studio at the same time as Wham, because I can imagine Andrew Ridgley and John Oates getting together backstage to air their grievances - "We're the stars, man - they're holding us BACK!" Really not that keen on "Jack & Diane" - it just seems like a never-ending stream of rock 'n' roll cliches, lyrically and musically. Never thought this at the time, but listening to "Living On The Ceiling" now, it seems to have a strong David Byrne influence. Good record, though. The Diana Ross video is hilarious thanks to the not-so-special effects trying to make us believe that Ms Ross is flying. I quite like the song, though. Nice use of rising and falling dynamics. |

The was supposed to be getting retired (and it's also the first time I've ever used that one. It's also the last time too!) and we were also supposed to be getting new features.Perhaps the techs couldn't get anything different to happen

I can't see any obvious differences either. Oh well, at least we're good to go for tonight's show. Just time for a quick bite to eat first.

Glad DS is back in time for TOTP.
Also lucky we had Sky at Night last night while DS was down. |

And to think that gender bending seems to be the in thing now.
All the youngsters today thinking they invented transexuality. |

Yay, nice to see Blue Zoo get a showing on the early edition this time round. (Not that they were likely to cut the opening act...unless it was an early Shaky performance)
