Jarre is back to form with his two recent Electronica albums after years of sub-standard tut. From his imperial phase all anyone needs is Oxygene, Equinoxe, Magnetic Fields, Zoolook and Concerts in China live album.
Oxygene was the album we had when I was a kid, along with a VHS of the Docklands concert. It was only years and years later that I actually got round to getting some more albums. A few years ago a guy I know did me a couple of compilations of his favourite JMJ tracks, as he was a huge fan, so I kind of have the other albums in a round about sort of way.

The Jets 2nd and final Top 40 hit. It feels like they had much more. Probably something to do with being featured on TOTP's 6 times with the 2 singles.
Am I the only one who noticed the chip in the fingerboard of the double bass under the 4th string?

And the woman on the front of the stage in the blue dress - I know she's one of "Zoo" but I can't help thinking I've seen her somewhere else. Any ideas?

Always preferred 'The model' though!
I know, it's a great track. So glad it reached No.1. It had an odd chart run when it climbed -10-2-3-1-

I'll have to watch it back later.

Yes - the video looks like it's from 1958 though, Nevermind 1978!!
Ha ha, yeah. The 'Trans-Europe Express' video I'm familiar with is black and white and has that really old movie feel to it.

Maplin's in-house band.
Could somebody warn the guitarist before his solo that his guitar isn't actually plugged in?

The world still awaits an official release of their videos. Just as it does a collection of all their remixes and extended/alternate versions. Kraftwerk must've put millions into the pockets of bootleggers over the years through "their" refusal to mine the back-catalogue.

A classic from Soft Cell.
Quite definitely!

While we're at it, there was also this rather glorious Kraftwerk pastiche in Yonderland series 2 last year...

I've got my fingers crossed they'll do Sparks for series 3.

Health & safety. It's unplugged as he was going to be thrown in the swimming pool to wrestle with a rubber crocodile.

John Peel, doing TOTP makes a change from Powell and co.
Yes, he does seem to be sending it up, somewhat.

Hard to believe Marc was ever so fresh-faced. He looks like a reanimated corpse these days.
So maybe we can look forward seeing him in an episode of "The Walking Dead" sometime soon.

They are doing their best to make up for inflicting the Jets on us. Another classic.
I can't help thinking that Dave Gregory's guitar part (the Rickenbacker 12 string) somehow influenced REM.

And/or Johnny Marr.

John was actually delighted to be asked back to present TOTP again.
He's sadly missed, whether on radio or TV.

Must be something wrong with me today, I completely forgot about the show. And the late show is on really late as well. Sod's Law.

Thank goodness we have the best number 1 ever before that load of rubbish
I couldn't think what you were referring too there.

No, The Jam straight in at 1 next week /tomorrow
I see now though. Yep, a right classic coming up!

You need this boxset:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Katalog-Sch...dp/B009XJ97PI/

Hell, EVERYBODY needs this boxset!
Looks interesting, a bit pricy though! The only Kraftwerk track I have is The Model. I'm sure I should have and would enjoy more by them though. But, I've never quite known where to start with their back catalogue. I don't think they've ever released one but they could do with putting out a 'best of' type record IMO.

A great episode. OMD, XTC, Theatre of Hate and Kraftwerk all good, and great presentation from Peel. But the obvious stand out was Soft Cell, brilliant song and excellent video. 8/10 for me. Can't wait for tomorrow, off to watch the football now.
Yes, spot on there Scott!

XTC on their way to the Top 10. Great track.
It's interesting that nobody - even the wonderful John Peel got the joke about XTC's name - it was originally supposed to be pronounced "Ecstasy".

I paid £45 for the English language set and @£65 for the German when they first came out.

"The Mix" is the closest they've come to a Best Of.

I was thinking that but wasn't that on a Friday early evening? I thought the Relax video would be a little too 'risque' for then
I'm not sure if I remember this correctly, but it wasn't on any programme - I think C4 just showed the video on it's own, with the usual warnings. That was back in the days when they would take risks with their scheduling (does anybody remember the red triangles?)

OMD and XTC - we just needed ABC for a game of Countdown
But it would be a very low scoring round!

This XTC track could easily be released now and sound contemporary.
Does anybody know what they're doing now? Are they even involved in the music business anymore?

- it hadn't been invented yet - later in the year though!
A pilot episode of 'Calendar Countdown' (as it was originally called) was filmed in 1981 at Yorkshire Television Studios but never transmitted.

That AC/DC song "Let's Get It Up" - I'm assuming it's about trying to restart a crashed computer?
No (bear in mind that in 1982 nobody really had computers) it's actually about having to build a new skyscraper in the shortest possible time.
