It's difficult to believe Happy Talk and Beat Surrender only made it to numbers 70 and 72 respectively in the year end chart despite both spending two weeks at number one, especially Beat Surrender since December is usually a month when sales are stronger than average. Mirror Man must have been very close behind Beat Surrender for both the weeks the latter was at number one since it ended up being number 49.

Here's the last episode of 1982, a second look back at the year hosted by Gary Davies, Janice Long, Pat Sharp and Savile.

The good news is that we shouldn't have any problems getting hold of original copies of Yewtreed editions of TOTP from now on because I'm pretty sure 1983 was the year when VHS recorder ownership/rental started to go through the roof. I know my family first rented a machine some time during 1983. I've still got a video cassette with the two Christmas Top of the Pops editions that were recorded by my mum. It still works okay and the quality hasn't deteriorated all that much.

VHS tape quality is poor at best, even Super VHS isn't great I remember paying £15 each for top grade Fiji 3 hours tapes. The quality of recordings now achievable using Panasonic Blu-ray recorders (no other companies make them) is in a different league to video tape, especially as the programmes recorded from channels such as BBC4 HD are copied as delivered in 'broadcast quality'.

I thought Carol Vorderman was standing next to Simon Bates as he introduced Shalamar at the start of his show.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...-pops-09121982 But who is the mystery 4th vocalist singing with Shalamar? He is standing at the back of the stage with his own microphone. I think it could be Jermaine Stewart, who provided backing vocals on Shalamar's 1982 album "Friends" and had a big hit in 1986 with "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off". His Wikipedia page even says 'while in London for a show, he met Mikey Craig of Culture Club': could it be that the show was this episode of TOTP, on which Culture Club also appeared? |

DLT is no longer subject to the terms of his suspended sentence and hasn't been since October last year. Therefore from October last year BBC Four should have started to repeat DLT editions in the weekly schedules but they haven't and continue to discriminate against him. As for banging on about DLT, I spoke to a fair few friends last night who watch TOTP repeats and not one of them thought DLT should be continued to be blocked by the BBC. The majority want to see his editions again but the BBC on it's moral crusade, backed by a minority of idiots prevent us from seeing them again. Hasn't Jonathan King been cleared of latest round of charges? Note: Not a JK fan at all but getting highly fed up with how much we are missing in repeats to certain presenters editions not being shown for one reason or another. Therefore both should be shown, it is bad enough that on top of JS editions (not shown for obvious reasons) we do not see any Mike Smith editions and will also miss out on the 1983 xmas specials due to DLT being in one and Mike Smith in the other. As usual the BBC plays Judge, Jury and Executioner with regards to King and DLT. |

![]() ![]() http://hub.tv-ark.org.uk/images/test...stcard_big.jpg I watched the 16/12/82 episode on a reasonably large screen from the link posted here, and, although it was obviously a tape recording, it was perfectly watchable. If other banned episodes are posted in the same quality that will be fine. |

I just had to comment and agree with many others that the TOTP'S 2 Wham special was completely ruined by Mark Radcliffe's 'commentary'. Was it meant to be funny? He was still waffling on by the time George got to the first chorus of 'Club Tropicana'.
And the researcher on the show should have been taken out and shot. The online info. suggested that the 'Young Guns...' performance was from July 1981! ![]() They showed 'Wake Me Up...' on the week it was No.1 and suggested it was from July 1984 but it had been knocked off No.1 in June. Really disappointed. Quote:

Trying desperately to get "Orville's Song" out of my head. The extent of mawkish sentimentality in this is off the scale - it's almost quite disturbing. (And we get it again in the first episode we'll see in 1983!! A message to the BBC Four editors: if you have any intention of leaving this in the 7:30 showing and editing out The Belle Stars' "Sign Of The Times", I will quite literally send the boys round.) Thank heavens I won't have to hear the tedious "Best Years Of Our Lives" again. Whoever wrote it must have expended at least 30 seconds of effort on it... As for "Best Years Of Our Lives" it's a good example for me of how there can be no accounting for taste because my father would tell anyone how it's a great song but can't find anything positive to say about any song by The Smiths or The Cure. |

ABBA's final appearance on TOTP with Under Attack, shortly before they "split".
Love the tacky flashing Xmas trees on the editions chart rundown. |

Well that's it guys for 1982 sadly, with the 25-12-82 and 30-12-82 editions not being repeated by BBC Four.
What song to finish on Modern Romance and "Best years of our lives" For those that can stomach seeing Savile on TOTP please check out my Youtube page for the "yewtree'd" 30-12-82 edition in full. |

Maybe so but the overall point is that DLT and Jonathan King editions shouldn't be "Yewtree'd" in the first place.

Certainly resembles Carol Vorderman, however I don't think it is her because she had just started Countdown in November 1982.

I think musically - ABBA's output was still quite strong - although not quite in the same league as their late 70s hits. However, what became noticeable is their 'middle aged' image on stage from the early 80s. Frida with her now greyish hair & Agnetha in her jumper & rara skirt (which only teenage girls can pull off well)!
- I know image & looks shouldn't come first in pop music - but in the early 80s it was a very important factor. With Abba - I think not only did they lose some of their younger fans, but they also lost a lot of young people (into the early 80s music scene) in general. |

https://we.tl/p4F4lpiPRQ Some real gems in there. Old Jimbo is ironically wearing a judge's wig. Pat Sharp's face appears to be drooping on one side and he's struggling with his speech, as if he's had a stroke. |

I was never quite as struck on Abba's late seventies disco inspired singles like "Summer Night City", "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie" and "Voulez Vous". I am certainly not attempting to imply they are poor or ineffective - they work perfectly well, but for me, they don't quite reflect Abba at their best. I won't deny there was a strong consistency throughout the seventies, but i feel they were at their absolute peak from 1975-77. "SOS", "Mama MIa", "Money Money Money", "Fernando", "Dancing Queen", "Knowing Me, Knowing You", and "Name Of The Game" was when they sounded at their most natural and self assured. You could probably add "Chiquitita" from their slightly later songs. I have never liked "The Winner Takes It All" as much, although it is a very well conceived song. Their material towards the end did also begin to lack the more catchy elements of their early sound, but it was possibly more interesting than the likes of "Voulez Vous".

ABBA from 1975-77 will always be remembered & loved as the classic Abba period forever more - but I do think their "disco" period from the late 70s was exceptionally good also.

The BBC4 HD picture quality hasn't always been that great with these Top Of The Pops repeats, and especially with some of those shows from the latter half of 1980. Dare i say at times there has been very little to choose between those, and the old UK Gold and original private recordings made at the time, that are available (although admittedly with the poorer quality private recordings there is really no comparison). If there has been one improvement with regards to these 1982 shows, it has been a noticeable increase in visual quality. The clarity has improved quite drastically.

BBC4 HD broadcasting quality cannot really be compared to UK Gold, the latter being shown in SD with a low bitrate, I binned my UK Gold recordings because they were grainy, although recorded at 720x576 they do look a lot better on BBC4 HD because of the much higher bitrate when broadcast, this is especially noticeable when importing the episodes into a computer for editing.

Now 4/5 through the Xmas marathon after watching the Xmas Day episode, which was excellent. Highlights included Bucks Fizz - what on earth were they wearing?? and Haircut 100 ("we've got them back together" - and didn't they look just thrilled to be up there together??). Strange that Zoo did new routines for both "The Model" and "I've Never Been To Me" but we only saw an excerpt from each.
