92. DAVID CHRISTIE SADDLE UP
This was on Graham Norton's I Can't Believe It's Not Butter the other week.

Never heard it before, but it was terrible to be fair. Graham Norton went on about it too and said "I hope you're not listening to all these comments David" - he wasn't. The poor guy topped himself 20 years ago.

Saddle up and ride your pony
Sit around and you'll be lonely
Saddle up and make the dust fly
Get on your high horse and ride
No use herding blues at Rancho, Rancho
Put on your sombrero and your poncho
Don't stay where trouble will find you
Go, while the getting is good
You'll find the end of a rainbow
Just as soon as you've understood.

Now watched the 30th Dec episode, and it's a pretty underwhelming end to the year. A bunch of bands going through the motions miming to songs they'd probably rather have seen the back of by now. Seemingly random selection of songs probably determined more by who was available to come in than the size of the hit.

That's a wrap for 1982. A night off from TOTP tomorrow and then the 6th January 1983 episode to watch on Thursday night (see the 1983 thread for details).

Yes it did with North Atlantic's 'I know' However Cacharpaya preceded it by almost a decade. I could have predicted the abuse Cacharpaya would get on this forum - and the posters did not let me down.

For every yin there is a yan.

I loved it , bought it and still listen to it to this day.

Surely someone else out there also can appreciate this wonderfully original piece of music? Then again...
Couldn't agree more Rammie - it's a brilliant and infectious track. The guy playing the pan pipe would do the sane on My Heart will go On

Anyone notice Simon Groom & Peter Duncan from Blue Peter in the audience just before Shaky on the last ep? Looks like they 'forgot' they weren't meant to look at the camera!!!
Yep i did and Duncan was wearing his trademark bobble hat. I reckon they hung around at TVC as they would have just finished a live Blue Peter an hour or so before. Nice to see them there. Groom was always my fave as a kid.

Ditto from AndyD for Incantation.

Although panpipes are now a staple listen for background New Age music in garden centres across the land (mainly a poor relation of this original), in 82 it was virtually an unheard sound in the UK & seemed fresh and exciting.

A right good knees up is Cacharpaya with the wonderful annotation 'Andes (Knees and) Pumpsa Desi'.

OK the bracketed bit's been added but for me the track's Panpipetastic!

Well I can finally finish off with my comments on the final TOTP edition of 1982. Another so-so edition as far as I'm concerned (the previous Savile hosted edition was much better) so it only gets a seven and half out of ten from me.

It did start off fantastic with The Maisonettes' Heartache Avenue, which is obviously inspired by Elvis's Heartache hotel. The retro sound works just perfectly. I'm guessing, though, that the two female backing singers were purely window dressing and didn't actually sing on the record.

I really couldn't face the Peace On Earth - Little Drummer Boy video again, so it was fast foward for Bing and Bowie I'm afraid.

I'm definitely in the "not a fan of Incantaion's Catcharpaya" camp. I don't like pan pipes at all and they weren't a particularly appealing bunch of guys to look at. It did get a bit more interesting when it started getting faster, but it didn't get fast enough for my liking.

Nice to see Shaky back on his feet for this performance of Blue Christmas, although when he moved to the centre of the stage he seemed to moving a bit gingerly. So close to getting that Christmas no. 1 but no cigar - well not until 1985 anyway!

I don't remember this Imagination song or performance at all from when I've watched it before, and that pretty much says it all. I will give Changes some more listens, though. I was quite distracted by their dance moves and wondering where their instruments had gone!

Having been there on that very first edition of this repeat run of TOTP, it's so sad to say goodbye to Abba. Its a shame it was with Under Attack, which is pretty underwhelming, rather than The Day Before You Came. Watching this performance from The Late Late Breakfast Show, it seemed clear they'd had enough.

Of course its easy to make fun of Orville's Song, but I can't understand why some people have so much hatred for songs like these. It is what it is - a song for kids. I take it they never watched kids shows or sang kids songs when they were age. Anyway, yes it is sickly sweet but I think the performance was staged well and Keith's voice was strong enough to carry the song off.

While I don't mind Save Your Love, I'm not sad to see the back of the video at all. I can't think of any other artist who has shunned their number one hit like Hilary/Renee did and it was a shame for Renato not to be able to perform it in the studio. At least he got to turn up, dressed as Santa, to celebrate being Christmas no. 1.

Well I can't think of a better song to have ended this run of 1982 edition than Modern Romance's Best Years Of Our Lives, and a new performance too. It sounded like it was the Christmas mix of the song that you never usually hear. Great to see Kid and Renato dancing along.

Right, that's 1982 done with - bring on 1983!

I of course meant the penny whistle and his name was Tony Hinnigan. Another member, Simon Rogers, would join The Fall! Information courtesy of @topofthepopsfax

I would agree with your previous comment that the christmas day Top Of The Pops was a good one. I am not sure it rates as one of the best compilation shows for me, as i have a pretty big preference for the music predominantly of the years prior. However, it did prove on the whole quite a sprightly show and rather entertaining.

Yes, the 30th Dec show did almost seem like an afterthought by comparison, and really not a huge loss.

23rd January 2008: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b008s9p1. Unfortunately the first few minutes were shown in the wrong aspect ratio, and there were no repeat showings. That month they also showed the Boxing Day 1967 episode, the 15/02/68 edition, and the Christmas specials from 1978 (with film clips intact, unlike the more recent airings) and 1994.
