I'm all booked up to go to a butlins absolute 80s weekend in October where there will be a few familiar faces from Top of the Pops! Altered Images, Nick Heyward and Bucks Fizz will be there! Can't wait!

If you take a cursory look down the Top 40 some Weeks, there's examples that make Centerfold sound like a nursery rhyme.

The proliferation of tracks describing sex in explicit description, rape and violence against both women and men, mainly in rap / R&B from the past 20-25 Years I find revolting, repulsive and abhorrent in equal measure.

Whilst I'm a fan of most genres, including rap such as Public Enemy (which actually said something) and not easily shocked, I struggle to find any redeeming features whatsoever in this lot, probably because there are none...

Please don't click if easily offended

Regarding Jonathan Ross' reluctance to play Centerfold, IMO Ross relinquished his moral guardianship with the Sachsgate stuff & the equally odious Brand, transcript below should anyone need reminding. Bear in mind this puerile drivel was broadcast on Radio 2 Saturday morning.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/cele...rew-Sachs.html

As for Centerfold, I liked the track in '82 & I still like it. I think the 'inspiration' for the video came from the hugely popular US frat-based films of the time such as Porky's or Animal House.

I don't have a problem with the video personally, but some might I suppose depending on your point of view and sensitivity to the subject.

For this reason I think the video might fall into the category "Acceptable in the 80's".

Awesome. Always fancied going myself TBH.

I follow Bucks Fizz on Twitter and they always reply to their fans; made me like them even more.

Is there still 2 versions of Bucks Fizz?

Check out Brewood Music Festival online as Bucks Fizz & Nick Heyward are appearing.

The fact that at the Butlins weekender they're billed as "Mike, Cheryl and Jay formerly of Bucks Fizz" suggests there are!

I'm guessing he will have been planning his revenge - reclaiming centre stage with Toni Basil, which will hopefully feature in a coming episode?

He seems to have had rather a lacklustre 80s before he landed his part in London's Burning … I wonder what he was doing all that time?”

Looking at his entry on imdb it looks like he was undertaking bit part acting roles with his biggest being playing a character called "Gypsy Man" in 8 episodes of Emmerdale in September and October 1986

Does anyone else remember that about this time there was a spat between Paul Weller and Andy Partridge via the Roundtable single review show on R1?

Weller slagged off "Senses Working Overtime" when he was on, then when "Town Called Malice"/"Precious" was reviewed, Partridge was on the panel and wasn't complimentary - said something like "it sounds like they said 'We'll have a yard of this style on one side and a yard of this style on the other side'".

Well... to be strictly pedantic...
Yes, "Nightporter" was a track on the 1980 Japan album Gentlemen Take Polaroids, and yes it also appears on the live album Oil On Canvas, (in a new studio recording rather than a genuinely live version, actually) but a slightly remixed version of the 1980 track was also released as a single in October 1982.
So Highlander1969 was correct to call it a 1982 single. It reached 29 in the charts.

'Nightporter' is also a gorgeous song. Not quite as good as 'Ghosts' which we should soon be seeing but it's almost as wonderfully atmospheric.

I've seen posters for one of those events.

Owen Paul is listed as appearing. I'm dying to know how that works. Does he just come on, belt out 'Favourite Waste Of Time' then shuffle off again?

Apparently influenced by Erik Satie, as Ghosts was said to be influenced by Karlheinz Stockhausen. I'm not sure whether David Sylvian actually said anything about those artists in interviews.

I don't know if Sylvian ever mentioned Satie in connection with 'Nightporter', but I'm pretty sure that it was mentioned in some reviews at the time Gentlemen Take Polaroids was released …

I've often wondered that about some of these 'one hit wonders' being on this sort of bill myself. I kind of assume they come on, do maybe an extended 10 minute type version of their hit and possibly then a cover of some or other perennial crowd pleaser and then, off they go. I'd be curious to know quite honestly!

Just googled Owen Paul via setlist.fm, doesn't really enlighten. http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/owen-p...-1bc44de4.html Maybe he does just do the one song.

He'll stand on the stage unaware whilst the pre-recorded track begins

Owen Paul has also done a stint as an ersatz Jim Kerr in XSM - the "ex-Simple Minds" band featuring the original drummer and bass player.

I know I'm probably preaching to the converted, but we're in for a real treat over the next year or so with 1982-1984 being one of the most interesting periods in the history of pop music in my opinion. I think 1983 in particular was a year when things changed more than at any time since 1963/64.

I mostly agree with you. There are some later 80s song that I really like, for example Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But The Rent by Gwen Guthrie, I Can't Wait by Nu Shoooz, Addicted To Love by Robert Palmer, Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel, although admittedly those are from 1986 rather than 1987-89.

I don't know if you know but the original drummer of Simple Minds is the older brother of... Owen Paul!

Does anyone agree that often the best performances on Top of the Pops of number one songs are by the group/singer when they first appear in the studio before they know how successful the track is going to be? (Assuming they don't go straight into the top spot). For example I thought the best performance of Tainted Love was the first one because the group was putting in a special effort to make an impression but at the same time Almond and Ball were obviously a bit nervous that it might be a flop. The same was true for Ghost Town. Actually it doesn't just apply to number ones IMO but any top 10 hit.

Although I always consider "my era" to be 1977 to 1985, 1983 has always been my least favourite year of the whole of that period. It's still a decent year though...

I am not sure i agree with you there, Andy. 1983 is better than 84, for sure, but 1983 marks a significant descent into pop becoming ever more corporate. The ramifications of the MTV revolution, continues its merry march. It's a steady decline from the point we are now at in 82, in my opinion, although of course, there are a few memorable moments scattered here and there along the way. If 1983, is so great, what does that make 1967, or 1971?

I say enjoy the 1982 charts that are currently being repeated now, while there is still a certain level of consistency. After 1983, that really does begin to go, and i really do start to lose interest rapidly.
