A question's just popped into mind after seeing that Top 10 video countdown:

Other than TOTP, where else could you see music videos and performances on British TV at this time in 1982?

I can think of Swap Shop and Tiswas on a Saturday morning, but were there any other music-related shows on TV then?

Very much agreed. Weller was his generations best lyricist by a long chalk IMO.

No, it was Fountains Abbey. Recognised it from The History Boys.

Ant Rap was done at Bodium Castle.

Weirdly, he looked a bit like Laurie Kynaston playing young Danny Baker in Cradle To Grave. Or maybe that was just my eyes.

For videos I think I relied on Swap Shop and Tiswas. I remember seeing Blondie's 'The Tide is High' on one of those shows for the first time. It was so exciting.

Decent enough episode, pity they didn't show ABC. Liked The Jam and Madness best.

Still chuckling away to Mike Read at the start of 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'. What a fool!

Well, there was Cheggars Plays Pop! and Razzmatazz I think? I thought The Tube also at first but then I don't think that started until later in the year, certainly not before the late summer.

Channel 4 and The Tube both began at the beginning of November 1982.

Just getting round to watching TOTP now - (in between Corry) - average episode so far!

I have to admit to having a strong dislike for George Benson's watery take on soul.

Wasn't he the originator of MTV?

He should be ashamed of himself!

Yeah, you're right Mr H. I was getting a bit ahead of myself history wise there!

Seems Razzamatazz didn't start until June '81 either. I was sure that was on by now, but again no.

Sounds of the 70's 'Guilty Pleasures' is rather pleasant back ground music for this time of night I have to say!

Yes I agree & thank goodness as we got to see a bit more of 'The Model' from Kraftwerk!! Should've been No 1 for longer!!

There was OTT on ITV. Certainly featured live music, not sure about videos.

The original lyrics for 'Kitty' recorded in 1979 by the British group Racey were written from a male perspective, but the line 'Anyway you want to do it, I'll take it like a man' was retained when the song was renamed 'Mickey' and sounds a bit risque sung by a woman.

And The Tube used to make their own cutting edge videos! Superb music show!

He was the originator of the concept of showing music videos on TV - he conceived a show called 'Popclips' which aired in the US a few years before MTV launched - but he declined a role in the formulation of MTV itself as he had differences with the other channel creators.

Thanks for the replies about the other places to see videos at that time; the reason I asked was simply to confirm the fact that if, for instance, somebody saw that OMD video in tonight's TOTP countdown and wanted to see more of it, they had no way of doing so unless Tiswas or Swap Shop screened it?

It was asked on the TOTP's FB page. I'm sure it was The Beatles as I think it was talked about at the time.

The other question was who was the next act to do it? I know Oasis did it with 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and Cum On Feel The Noize' but I was thinking someone must have done it between the Jam in '82 and Oasis in '96.

precious was awful compared to the brilliant town called malice, cant understand why they made it a double A.
The Jam went really downhill after their number ones Going Underground, Start and Malice,
Funeral pyer was a dirge and absoulute beginners not up to their standard for single excellence

I don't think I'd ever seen anyone except The Jam doing it! Think I'd gone off TOTP by 1996 - especially if Oasis were No 1!
