Well, there have been a few decent haircuts, but its amazing that someone who has had such a large influence should have a few howlers in the barnet department!

I would have to disagree. After The Beatles, they're my favourite singles band, tied with The Cure.

So, The Beatles in '66 (England win the Jules Rimet trophy), The Jam in '82 (England's first World Cup in 12 years) and Oasis in '96 (England make the Euro semi-finals).

Great years to be a Mod and an England fan!

Paul Weller is always said to be 'awkward' or 'difficult' - but I had a friend who bumped into him in Birmingham City centre last year & he stopped to have a photograph taken with her - so now - unless he has a double - he might not be so difficult after all!

At number 30 this week in the countdown was D Train's You're The One For Me, one of the best and most innovative funk tracks of the early 1980s. A pity it isn't shown on TOTP unless it appears on DLT's show on 25th February.

Does anyone here know the reason why The Jam split up when they were at their peak

Was it creative differences

Well said Sir, couldn't agree more. I think 1982 was a magnificent year for music, along with 1965-1968, 1970, 1972 and 1983. 1984 was ok but thereafter music went downhill to the current sh*te we hear today.
A fair appraisal I'm sure you'll agree.

I have to agree. I don't think The Jam recorded poor singles - they were all of a certain standard, however invariably some singles tend to stand out more than others. ''Funeral Pyre'' wasn't quite as accessible as ''A Town Called Malice'' (it may seem a little impenetrable), but i think it may perhaps become more enduring after a number of listens, where arguably ''A Town Called Malice'', may just lose a little of its shine.

Dont you think the year Oasis and Blur were fighting out for the Number one spot was a good year for music, especially Oasis bringing out their classic album

I believe this week's yewtreed DLT episode to be superior to the last show, introduced by Mike Read. DLT, himself seemed in pretty good form, and having some fun. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the Theme From Hill Street Blues, and especially as there was more traditional instrumentation with piano/keyboards and guitar to be found, which seemed a nice change from the more contemporary synth pop and rock sounds, that were filling the charts. Not quite sure what to make of the Zoo routine, which reminded me a little of line dancing, with a bit of exhibitionism thrown in, in picking up and manoeuvring the female partners, without dropping them. I notice Anita Chellamah features prominantly, and i must admit she looks really very eye catching in suspenders....yum!

There were a few repeat performances from previous shows, including Bow Wow Wow, Adrian Gurvitz, The Jam, and the Fun Boy Three/Bananarama (which looks similar, but is apparently not a repeat performance according to Popscene), which i rather like, aside perhaps from Adrian's ''Classic''. Also, not forgetting the repeat playing of the Hall And Oats ''I Can't Go For That'' and J Geils '''Centrefold'' videos. Depeche Mode's ''See You'', though was a new performance. I have always liked that track. Iron Maiden's ''Run To The Hills'' also, strikes me as being a superior hard rock/metal song, and a long way ahead of the likes of AC/DC's ''Let's Get It Up'' from a week or two back. I enjoyed the video to Haircut 100's ''Love Plus One'', too.

However, a little like with Soft Cell's ''Say Hello, Wave Goodbye'' appearance in a previous show, one song, for me, stands head and shoulders above the rest, and this time that is The Associates ''Party Fears Two''. There is no question that ''Party Fears Two'' will appear in my top 10 at the end of the year. It is a genuine classic in my opinion. Shame we missed it this time round, but the song should be included in the Simon Bates edition soon.

How come The Psychedelic Furs song Pretty in Pink that was shown in that episode of Top of the Pops was different to this version

Interesting, thanks for the info. Looking back at my original post you quoted, I still think he looks like he should have been huge, he certainly had the pop star 'look' about him but it never seemed to happen. Nice to hear he's still out there doing what he presumably loves though.

Mind you Weller is no stranger to borrowing. what with Start and The Beatle's Taxman also Changing Man and ELO's 10538 Overture.

Some interesting stuff on that OGWT and well worth a watch, had a double take when a band I'd never heard of Vinegar Joe appeared fronted by Elkie Brooks with Robert Palmer on vocals and guitar.

All the best

That's a great clip isn't it. And Elkie's pretty wild on it in many ways and quite the contrast to who she later became as seen on her recent TOTP appearances. It's almost like she wanted to be Janis Joplin but ended up having to be a bit of a slightly non descript MOR artist in order to gain success.

Woah! Hold on a minute. Is this the same girl from this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxUYn1xTp-4 That's the brilliant Cherry Bombz, well, actually they weren't brilliant their album was ok but THAT song was the total standout track and should have been a hit! I just loved it and played it death back then and still enjoy hearing it now. And, now I learn she was also previously a dancer in Zoo? and was also in Toto Coelo I now discover. Things you learn on this often informative little thread. Love it.

The one you link too is a re-recorded version made for inclusion on the soundtrack of the film of the same name. The original is the better version IMO though, it's a bit grittier and looser sounding. Re-recorded version is good too though.

It's alright but after the heady heights of his first 4/5 singles I don't think it really matches up to his previous high standards. But, as ever, we've all got different tastes in that respect and quite frankly, that's a good thing!

On the subject of Numan why exactly 'Me, I Disconnect From You' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxF6aFrCw7w wasn't a single still puzzles me to this day. One of his finest songs.

Yes, spot on, Torch81, Anita Chellamah has enjoyed a wide and varied career, and is still performing today as a rock vocalist. She, of course, was originally the girl who replaced Pauline Peters in Legs & Co.
