Nick looked absolutely terrified there as the camera came towards him

This is unusual — a fourth performance on Top of the Pops for a single, with Love Plus One.
It's as if they'd looked through a crystal ball and saw the Yewtree episodes to avoid!

Were Dave Gahan and Nick Heyward having a contest as to who could look the youngest?
I know. I wonder who they sent in to get their ciggies or booze for them?

how did they have such uncool deejays and presenters back then
Bates then was the same age as Beyonce is today.

He had a duet with Willie Nelson with 'To All the Girls I've Loved Before' in '84.
He had a duet with Stevie Wonder which reached No5 in late summer 1988. Remember "My Love"? That was a decent track.
I had even less idea that he had at least four hits!

Paul Weller seemed to have no time for Haircut 100, yet looking back, their style was quite mod-ish.

Slight mistake by Bates — they'd already appeared on the 25th February edition with DLT.

First time on TOTP, apart from the last time they were on.

You'd never imagine Dave Gahan would be hopeless junkie a few years on from this would you?

Not exactly hopeless as he is now clean

The best single on the show tonight - Associates, Party Fears Two.

A standout single of the 1980's too.

Probably not a karaoke classic.

Steady up that camera!

Banjo playing is hard enough to focus on as it is.

I thought this was just the theme music for the Radio 4 satirical show "Week Ending" for many years. Didn't realise it was a pop song with lyrics.

The world's a poorer place because Billy is no longer in it.
