I'm quite tempted by the HP Chromebook 13, if it's coming to the UK.

It's been a long time coming for what always seemed like a natural step. I remember being at a roundtable meeting with Google and Motorola and it being hinted at even then. We're talking about the Xoom tablets, so not exactly recent!

That is a great choice.. I think it will be a bit pricey for me..

I am tempted by the Acer Chromebook 14.. It should be cheaper..

It also has an aluminium body and the option of full HD

With addition of Google Play and Android apps, I expect these new chromebooks will be a must have for Christmas..

Genuine question. Is it tempting? You basically get the same on your Chromebook you already have on your phone. People have a problem to tear themselves off of their phones anyway

I have the Toshiba Chromebook 2 with HD 13" screen and I can't wait for this merger .

@IvanIV
phone screens are quite fiddly for a lot of things, especially when your eyesight is not 100%, so having a larger screen AND a keyboard makes life so much easier, and to have some apps that I could use on it would be great!
I have several apps that I mainly ignore because they are too difficult to use on a 5" screen.... Minecraft I'm looking at you especially. (I actually have Minecraft on my PC and thought it would be good to have it on my tablet or phone, but I can't get on with the zoomed in FOV plus having my fingers in the way on the smaller screen. Hope they make that game available on Chrome OS

That's great news. I've wanted a chromebook for a long time. In fact it's my next step.

This just makes it an even more attractive poposition.

I'm a big fan of Android/Google on phones and tablets but I'm yet to see a compelling reason why I would choose a Chromebook rather than a Windows laptop for personal use. I can see them being great as low cost devices for kids, schools and other cases where you need a cheap locked down machine but it's going to take a lot to persuade me to move away from Windows on my "main" computer.

Mind you, I can just about see the point of a Chromebox as a small media server

Seems to be copying Windows 8 and 10. I keep a Windows Metro Twitter app open on my desktop PC in the corner of one screen. Far neater than keeping a tab of Firefox or Chrome open for just Twitter.
Being able to run the exact same apps on PC, tablet and phone, and all desktop software on both PC and tablet, is a great thing about Windows.
It's where, IMHO, Apple screwed up with the iPad Pro having a basic tablet OS rather than the full OS of Windows tablets, and it's where Apple is restricting its users options and capabilities for the sake of keeping control over the walled garden app store and its income. iPads run apps only. Macbooks run Mac programs only.

I'm sure Microsoft aren't thrilled about this. With so many more apps than the Windows app store having the Google Play Store now on laptops is tempting. But Windows tablets can run full desktop software, which is a huge advantage.

It will be interesting to hear how people will view Chromebooks compared to Windows 10. Chromebooks boast about "automatically updated", a part of Windows 10 many people hate, and Google's whole business model is spying on you to sell you stuff, again something some people hold against Windows 10.

The video shows us Android apps running on Chromebooks.

The demo shows how apps can be installed

It also shows how games apps will work seamlessly on Chrome OS."

They were making fun of MS for doing that, but they (Google and Apple both) have huge stores full of apps. And if they can without a significant effort make them available for their other platforms and make them thus more attractive, they would be stupid not to.

I thought years ago that Apple would make it so iOS apps could run on OSX.

I still think we're going to see some MacBooks getting touch. Forget about Jobs saying nobody wants to reach out to touch a screen on a laptop, as Apple is now doing its own thing and I am sure there's going to be a continued merging of the laptop and iPad line, with the iPad Pro already forming a bridge.

I have to wonder what Android is going to do. Android N brings proper windows to apps, and Chrome OS is doing it from the other side. At some point they need to merge too. Android will effectively replace Chrome OS.

Can iOS one day replace macOS?

From what I've seen of it, Android N only brings W8.1 tablet mode style windowing to apps. Which isn't what I'd describe as "proper windows" (which is what you get on a Windows or Apple Desktop). Its still a handicapped experience, but then it tends to be running on a device that shouldn't support a full desktop windowing experience - MS tried that with windows CE ....

iOS won't replace macOS - the higher end content creators would be seriously unhappy if that were to happen. It would almost make more sense for macOS to replace iOS. Actually, neither makes sense - they should be kept as separate products. Although having said that, MS seem to be doing a fairly good job so far with W10 keeping a consistent cross platform environment.

Currently you can only do split screen, but there's code to allow proper resizable windows. It may come, it may not. Split screen was a hidden option in Android M and then kept back to N, so who knows when it will happen.

I'm quite keen to get an HP Chromebook 13 if they go on sale here, or else I might import one, as I think Chrome OS is now at a point where most of the things I use my MBA for could be done on that.

Ultimately, with Android N allowing you to change the screen DPI, many phones with large screens can begin to make better use of that screen and windowed apps will be useful. Currently 'small apps' on a phone are usually useless as they can't fit anything useful in them - and hence why they've all but disappeared. Even Sony is dropping support for them now.

It should not be too difficult to run iOS app in a window on macOS. They have an emulator for developers already anyway to use as a starting point, just integrate it more, make it seamless. You don't need to necessarily replace one or the other.

Acer is said to be launching a Mediatek Cortex A72 based R13 Chromebook laptop.
A quick google has its availability from 16th August so maybe it is mid August for a wider launch?

I got one of those today. The build quality is superb, it feels nice and solid. Performance is not bad either.
