What soap plotline secrets were built up or hyped up to be scandalous or shocking but once they were revealed turned out to be boring or garnered a reaction of "Is that it?"

In EE I remember when Jane first came into the show and it was said she had a big secret from her past that she didn't want anyone to find out about. When it was revealed it turned out she was born Lesley

There was another EE one where Charlie Slater was dating a woman and she was very cagey and secretive. I remember there was a lot of speculation on DS that she may have been born a man. In the end the secret was she played the trumpet and she was in some sort of Salvation Army type band.

Max had a secret back in 2012. Jake Wood had taken a three or four month break so they had Max leave the square following a blow out with Tanya. When he came back. it was hinted for months on end between him and Jack that Max had done something while off screen. I remember guessing he may of killed someone. The producers and writers even told the press that the eventual secret was shocking and it was something a soap had never done before.

End result: He had a small but brief romance which led to a quickie wedding. This eventually led to us meeting Kirsty Branning at xmas.

Hardly original or shocking. It was lame.

she was called Lesley but her secret was her husband but clearly it was a very damp squib

any storyline involving a secret dtc has done can be added

I think the best secrets have been the unruined one, as in kept secret... Billy and the post and Mark Jnr

tho if the rumours are correct I expect Mark jnr to be the next squib

Who shot Phil Mitchell in 2001:

The storyline leading up to the shooting was brilliant but the reveal of Lisa Fowler being the one to shoot Phil was disappointing I was hoping for either Dan Sullivan or Steve Owen.

Tina's Murder in Corrie. Sooooo predictable, why on Earth did they whittle it down to 4 suspects from the outset (Tracey, Carla, Rob, Peter) it was obvious that it would be Rob.

However, Tracey setting a trap to shop Rob to the police was a good twist.

Part of the reason many of the secrets become "damp squibs" is because outlandish theories and speculation run riot on this forum.

Yeah I remember coming on these threads a few months before it and most people guest it was probably that he had a secret wife.

bib: No storyline involving Tracy is ever good. And she is still whining at and blackmailing Carla in spite of her own actions.

It wasn't a storyline, I just meant the twist in particular when Rob went to meet Tracey and she had set a trap so that he went to prision, I can't abide Tracey either, she is one of the (many) reasons I no longer watch Corrie.

BIB - Jane was very honest from the beginning that she was married but David, her husband, was dying. The secret was that she had been a very fat child and when she lost the weight, she started going by her middle name changing from "Fat Lesley" to Jane.

I thought Claudette coming back from the dead was disappointing, it was all over and done with too quickly.

Jane's secret was that she was married and her husband was ill and lived in a hospice. Charlie Slater's girlfriend Brenda's 'big' secret was that was she was moving abroad. Both were boring and disappointing though, you're right there. Speculation on this forum at the time for both of those secrets were that both Jane and Brenda were transsexuals.

A recent one but Jay's storyline, i don't think necessarily that it was boring but, as a lot of people on this forum correctly guessed, me and my friends guessed very early on that Linzi was going to be underage, so when it was revealed on screen it felt like a bit of a let down, i can't remember if it was ever described as being a shocking reveal but i found it obvious all along so it just didn't seem very shocking when it was revealed.

No Jane's big secret that was hyped up and speculated about for months was that she was married to David. She wasn't honest about it at all she hid David's existence from everyone and pretended to be single (she wore her wedding ring on a chain around her neck under her clothes). She was cagey and secretive about it for months eventually confessing to Ian and taking him to see David.

The thing about her being fat as a child and bullied was something she told Ian on their wedding day in July 2007 after witnessing him mock Heather for being overweight. It was first mentioned and wrapped up in one episode. We already knew her real name was Lesley that was revealed when her mother Linda appeared for her and Ian's first wedding (that didn't go ahead) in December 2006.

Did the secret about David really go on for months? I didn't think it was that long before we found out about him. The Lesley thing was built up to be bigger than what it was, I wonder if they scrapped their initial plans as they planned to go down a different route. I always thought it was weird that she chose to use the name Jane, you think she would have gone for something a little less plain.

Yes you are right. I might be misremembering them as the Lesley and trumpet playing was the first 'secrets' that were revealed by each character and they stuck in my mind more. When the true secrets were revealed after that I was kind of past caring by then.

I totally disagree. I think had Steve or Dan been the shooter it would have been predictable..

Same

Lisa was the perfect culprit and once she was revealed, it made you look back and realise it made sense it was her.

Exactly. Phil's treatment of her drove her to the brink.

I guessed it was her the night before the reveal as it ended with Phil on the doorstep looking down at her

Hollyoaks: Ally had a secret that was supposed to be big and shocking but ultimately was pretty disappointing and didn't go anywhere. (IIRC the actor quit so the storyline ended earlier than planned?)

Another one was when Texas was murdered and the show's publicity made it look like there would be a whodunnit, but it was revealed in the next episode or two after her death that Will had killed her
