Unfortunately none of what we saw would have been his decision. He has to do what the producers and directors tell him. They would have said you can't just stand there on your own with no set and no big idea. It's not an audition, it's the big time now. This is BGT and you have to fill the stage and have action. They would have given him tons of 'advice' as to who to do and in what setting, they may even have given him help with his script and suggested the restaurant idea. Where I would criticise him is in doing any of it but he's probably a nice guy and not a diva and was keen to take advice and do what they wanted.
Cowell is disingenuous when he criticises acts on BGT or XF for things we know are not their own idea. Producers and directors tell them what to wear, where to stand and suggest ideas for sets etc. You don't think singers get control of e budget and bring along a backing choir or 12 young female 'violinists' or 24 crazy dancers - that is all added in by the producers to make a big TV show. They frequently swamp the acts or ruin what they were good at. Very few amateurs have the authority to say 'no' or to know what works or doesn't.
