God dag, everyone, and velkommen to the 78th edition of DSFE! After a refreshing break in the southern hemisphere, we’re back in the frosty Nordic oceans. Ina Wroldsen and Broiler represented the proxy state of Svalbard to victory with their emotional single “Lay It On Me” - now, we return to the densely populated research and industrial mecca for the first time since Contest 48.

In the modern era, research, science, and technology are becoming increasingly important. In an effort to pay homage to the technological roots of their country, Alexos and I bring you:

DSFE 78: The Ny-Ålesund of Music!

The beauty of research is that the unknown can become more salient and clear. As such, this contest will be random country assignments. Please PM both jag02010 and Alexos your desire to enter; upon entering, you will receive one “good” and one “bad” country. It is your job to research and find the best song that represents your country. Keeping in line with the theme of research, please send along the research you have done to prove your artist’s eligibility.

The countries you could randomly be assigned include:
Spoiler

Research is global in scale, and the growing network of transcontinental policies, relationships, and trade agreements are inspiring this contest as well. To keep up with the competition of globalization, the ROTW contest is back in effect! For those who have not played an ROTW contest before, each player will have the opportunity to select any country in the world that is not in the traditional DSFE country list - with the exception of the United States and its associated territories - to represent. Pick a country and song that you think is worthy of a global research breakthrough. This portion of the contest is first-come, first-served - if you are too slow, someone WILL take the country you want, and you don’t want that happening. So start thinking.

Here is a timeline for entries:

-- Please submit your intent to play to both jag02010 and Alexos no later than Friday, May 27 at 7:00 p.m.
-- You will then be assigned countries. Send in your entries no later than Sunday, May 29 at 7:00 p.m.
-- For those interested in taking part in the ROTW contest: we will make an announcement on the thread when we will begin accepting entries. DO NOT send in your desired ROTW country in your initial PM, as it will not be reserved!

For any new player (or those who can't remember, I guess) here are the rules:
1. Your song cannot exceed 5 minutes.
2. Cannot be older than 2005.
3. Cannot have been a UK top 40 hit.
4. Cannot have been entered in a National Final or at Eurovision.
5. Cannot been entered in a previous contest, though if it was a non-qualifying song from a DSFE national final, that is okay. You CANNOT recycle ROTW entries in the ROTW round - for example, you cannot use “Girls Like Girls” by Hayley Kiyoko for Japan, or any other ROTW country. You could, however, use it for a standard Eurovision country.
6. At least one of the singers performing your song must have been born in the country, have ancestral links to the country going back no further than grandparents (full ancestry), or be a permanent resident of the country presently. As aforementioned, you MUST provide the link your singer has to the country.
7. Covers ARE allowed as long the song adheres to rules 1 to 6 above.
8. You can't change your song once it's been accepted, so choose wisely.

Which contestant will shock the world with a new breakthrough? Which player’s research will be deemed unoriginal and outdated? Find out soon. Please let us know any questions you have!

Signed up! Hope the random gods are kind to me. Not really updated any playlists for a long time and only had a quick search yesterday.

This sounds too fun for me to resist - will sign up and hope I'll be able to vote at some point while I'm on holiday for the QFs.

Signed up! Because I've been so caught up in my degree, I have literally no idea about what I'm going to send for anything, so researching could be fun!

As a reminder - we are NOT currently accepting ROTW sign-ups, so sending in your countries now will not secure their place! Please keep an eye on this thread for when we start up that process.

Apologies Justin. I was half asleep this morning and thought you meant not to send the entry instead.

I will probably sign up, but can I just check, are we only getting 48 hours to find our songs, because that seems quite a small amount of time. I'm lucky as I am off the weekend, but sometimes I do 2 full days in a row at weekends at that would completely rule me out from taking part if I was working.

Not a criticism but something I wanted to mention for the future. I will send off a sign up PM later today.

No I think you get your ordinary countries today (or when you actually sign up) and then ROTW countries are given out on Friday and it is only ROTW that you get 48 hours for?

Ah yes, I was on nights last night and just skimmed the thread so missed the part about getting countries when you sign up. Feel free to ignore my worry.

Don't worry!! I just wanted to make sure you didn't miss the window to reserve your countries and then get screwed over.

This is correct! Those that have signed up today will receive countries later this afternoon/evening, and you will have from when you receive your countries up until Sunday to send in entries.

ROTW hasn't been decided yet (really need to just fit it into my schedule this week), but you'll have longer than 48 hours for those, as well!

So I'm going through each of the contests that I've missed, going through the thread and finding the final playlist so that I'm not biased by how a song actually placed.
For DSFE 70 in Chisinau, for anyone who cares, I would have given my 1-7 to Ukraine, Germany, Australia, Jersey, Austria, Iceland, and France, my 8 to Wales, my 10 to South Korea, and my 12 to Croatia. Only three of those actually made the top ten, so good to see my taste still doesn't match

A 6 and a 12!

In case you are wondering (which you probably aren't), this is how the results would be if you'd have voted.

No points to Turkey . You don't have as good taste as I remember

I actually was interested, just couldn't be bothered to work it out. Thanks!

My apologies. To be fair, one of the five things I mark each song on is originality, and the verse reminded me far too much of 'I Kissed a Girl', which may have ruined its chances.

You voted for Italy and Algeria last contest and you would vote for Jersey back in 70.

Glad you are back March

For those who are interested, I'm gonna keep going through the last few contests, and put what my votes would have been here. Again, I'm going through the threads to find the final playlist, so I have no idea how any of the songs did while voting (except perhaps the winner if I saw it on the wiki)
These are my votes for DSFE 71...
