.................I guess this is the night when I admit to being the bloke who was first in Wouter's fantasy football league for weeks and weeks and fell from first to third place in the final week but don't let that put you off my predictions.
Hodgson's Heroes it is!!!!

Wonder if France will still be favourites after the first round of games. We knew the defence was dodgy but they're struggling to finish... And of course they now score!!

I wonder if the Varane injury and Benzema not being picked is going to affect them |

France looked very strong to me! The subs were bizarre, but hey all is well that ends well

England....don't think there are any outstanding teams in the tournament, there are good teams with the odd individual player, so for me England is up there with any of them.

Apart from in defense.
But as a squad, this is definitely a winning squad! |

All big teams have dodgy defences this time round, but they have fantastic players in almost every position. Deschamps made totally insane substitutions (which oddly worked out nevertheless) so if that's a sign of things to come... He may be outplayed by a better manager.
But as a squad, this is definitely a winning squad! Besides the defence problems, Pogba looks like he could be a liability....which is probably why he was taken off. |

Yes they have some very good players...but ultimately when they come up against a team that offers a bit more going forward they will lose in my opinion, I don't see this team winning the competition.
Besides the defence problems, Pogba looks like he could be a liability....which is probably why he was taken off. Anyway, this was just the opening game and France did very well in the circumstances. They barely got out of the group in 2006, so I wouldn't take this performance as an indication of their chances to progress. They have incredible quality and look very strong to me |

Pogba was asking a bit much of his teammates at times like he was too excited by the occasion and his billing as potential star man. A more clinical team might have battered France yesterday.

I'd love to be original but I think France look deserving favourites. It's more fun to pick an outsider each way - Austria, Turkey and Poland all worth watching to me. You could make a case for most nations there having seen Greece, Denmark, Czech Republic exploits in the past. If I had to pick one outsider - Austria.

I think France deserve their favourites billing and I didn't see anything in the first game that would sway me from that, except I think Low is a much much better manager than Deschamps and that may prove crucial at the later stages of the tournament.

Italy's odds will have fallen after that good performance. The good thing for us is that if Italy win their group, they're going to be on the France/Germany side of the draw rather than the predicted England/Spain/Portugal side. England if group winners could now be looking at a QF with Portugal or Belgium.

Usual suspects. I've bet Germany.
Italy looked very confident playing out of defensive tonight, but I thought their attack didn't actually look so penetrating. I don't think Italy will win. |

For those betting on likely finalists, England now look a reasonable bet. So long as we win our group we should have Soain, Belgium and Portugal as the tough teams on our side of the draw. We've got a good tournament record against Spain and Belgium although it's not so hot against Portugal. But if another team can do us a favour with the Portuguese...
On the other side of the draw, Italy seem to have a good team and have an excellent record against both Germany and France in tournaments. England vs Italy final anyone? All right then that's fantasy land but Spain vs Italy might be a more realistic bet. Not checked current odds yet though. |

I have Spain to win.
I also have an accumulator for group winners, picked all the favourites to top, apart from I picked Italy, not Belgium, to top their group. |

I haven't checked prices at all, but 11/1 on Italy sounds attractive...
I can see a smaller nation such as Austria going far if they play with the confidence and lack of fear that they have been... Could they do a Leicester?
