Spice Girls vs Girls Aloud
Slightly different comparison thread to my Five vs Blue one as they were in very different eras, but who do you prefer out of the Spice Girls and Girls Aloud as big UK girl bands? I preferred the Spice Girls, no disrespect to Girls Aloud but the Spice Girls were both better singers and had more fun pop songs

I like many songs from both however Girls Aloud never had an album as strong as Spice or Spiceworld imo however Tangled Up and Chemistry were both very strong just not in the same league for me.
I'm not going to go into who had better singers as both had strong and weak vocalists. |

There were a few songs from SG's that I detested ... and I doubt the singing abilities of at least two of them ... but it still has to be the Spices! Even though I don't think any song from them is as good as GA's The Promise. Well OK! Say You'll Be There was pretty brill too. And Stop.

I think Girls Aloud had a lot more consistently good songs over a longer period. I liked their edge and guitar element aspect to some of their songs.
The thing is however the Spice Girls have a few pop classics which completely overthrow GA and their consistency. Spice Girls select songs still played and sound good. Since Girls Aloud have split have any of their songs had lasting life? winner: Spice Girls |

Spice Girls single run from Wannabe to Goodbye is faultless.
Holler, Let Love Lead the Way & Headlines are ok. It will be interesting to see what the new material they were reported to be recording a few weeks ago for the 20th anniversary sounds like. |

Girls Aloud's singles run is very strong aswell though spoilt by a few unecessary cover versions. I really don't like the single mix of Untouchable either it's so crap in comparison to the album version.
Beautiful Cause You Loved Me is ok but I don't think it should've been a single after Something New. |

Girls Aloud, by a country mile! Quite simply - they had amazing songs. Clever, quirky, offbeat and often quite intricate songs with unusual structures (never just the standard verse, chorus, verse, chorus structure) that were incredibly catchy. With the exception of a handful of songs I found the Spice Girls' music really bland. Songs like Mama and 2 Become 1 are cringeworthy and sound really dated and childish to me. Girls Aloud's music, on the other hand, sounds fresh and relevant today and I'm sure still will for a long time to come. Girls Alouds' brand of pop had a far punchier, grittier edge to anything Spice Girls released.
Plus, the only decent singer in Spice Girls was Melanie C, in my opinion. Emma and Victoria have nice tones to their voices but sound very weak. Melanie B has a very mediocre voice at best, imo, and the less said about Geri's "singing" the better! With Girls Aloud, both Nadine and Nicola have excellent voices. Nadine was the best singer, but I think Nicola has usurped her in recent years. Whilst some of the other girls can go off-key singing live Nicola is always pitch perfect and sings with the most feeling out of all of them. Sarah and Kimberley can sound quite good - when they want to, that is, and put the effort in (Sarah does tend to screech at times though!) Cheryl actually has a beautiful tone to her voice but isn't the strongest live singer. She's still miles ahead than Geri though. Personality wise, I always liked Girls Alouds personalites. Fun without being OTT. With Spice Girls Melanie B's and Ger's gobby, loud mouthed OTT antics used to really grate on me! So yes, for me it's Girls Aloud, by far. I still really miss them and their amazing Xenomania songs and wish they were still around and releasing more songs by them. The Spice Girls making new music, well I don't miss at all. As I said I do like Melanie C and have all her albums. She's released some damn good (but sadly under-heard/underrated) songs over the years. The Sea is particularly beautiful. I have one of Emma's albums too. She had some very catchy solo songs. "Maybe" is one of my faves by her. I just wish Nicola Roberts would release another album as her debut album is brilliant and so different to anything else around at the time. I still listen to it regularly.

I don't think Geri's voice is "that bad" though of course she's not strong. it's certainly improved alot over the years though. I think she sounds quite lovely in this performance from 2013.

It's difficult. I prefer more songs by Girls Aloud, but that's only because they released tons more songs than Spice Girls.
Viva Forever will always be one of the most gorgeous pop songs of my childhood though. Stunning song. |

There are big differences between the 2.
Spice Girls contributed more to their music. Spice Girls broke away from their management and took control of their own career. Spice Girls were a cultural phenomenon and invoke memories of nostalgia. Spice Girls had some catchy songs. Spice Girls all had different personalities. Girls Aloud - not a brain cell between them. Girls Aloud - came out at a very dark time for pop music, the early 2000's. Steps were ruling the charts. Girls Aloud - had musical geniuses like Sarah "too much plastic surgery" Harding and Cheryl "no personality dullard" Cole. Girls Aloud - can't think of one memorable song by them. |

Spice Girls for me. Say You'll Be There will forever be a quality pop song, plus they had that spark, that 'oomph' (lol) that set them apart.
I don't mind Girls Aloud (The Loving Kind is a great tune) but IMO they didn't have that 'oomph' that the Spice Girls had. |

You have to remember, although I suspect many are too young, that the Spice Girls completely changed the music scene. They blew up in such a way that I think only Lady Gaga has managed since. Magazines would not put girl groups on their cover because they didn't sell. The Spice Girls got a Smash Hits cover and it was the biggest selling edition of the 90s. Geri's union jack dress is a symbol of 90s pop culture. They sold 33 million in 18 months.. no one since The Beatles had done that. I could go on and on. They broke so many chart records it was insane.
You can dislike the Spice Girls all you want but their legacy is huge. Even today Adele cites Geri Halliwell as her biggest influence. Girls Aloud were a good girl group but they didn't impact anything on the scale the Spice Girls did. |

Spice Girls. Hands down. Spice alone has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, and they have two of the three best selling albums from a girl group of all time - Spice is the best selling, and Spiceworld is the third best selling.

Achievements, impact and success aside I still think the Spice Girls had better songs with the first two albums in particular than five albums worth of GA material in total.
Girls Aloud's first album is actually painfully weak. I like the singles and a couple of the album tracks like Some Kind of Miracle but overall it's a big mess. To think it got two different issues and was still crappy. The second album onwards saw big improvements in Xenomania quality. |

I don't agree in the 2 spice girl albums having better content than 5 ga albums. All other girls aloud albums after the 1st are really strong. Spice Girls are always going to be seen as bigger and they did dominate the world so rightly so, but I think the girls aloud singles stand the test of time better than the spice girls ones. It is a shame they relied on covers as other than jump there other singles were always better than their cover versions, what they were thinking when they released see the day god only knows |

I LOVE both groups and after some thinking about it Spice Girls gets my vote for a few reasons.
1. Spice Girls was i feel more relatable and approachable. 2.Spice Girls didn't release one single cover version and aside from the awful Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) i loved every single. 3. Of their 3 studio albums i believe that Spice and Spice World will be considered girl band classics sadly Girls Aloud don't really have a album that has that sort of backing that people will remember. 4. 20 years later people still talk about the Spice Girls i sadly don't see that with Girls Aloud i loved them both and Girls Aloud have had so many amazing songs and albums. and there live shows was brilliant but for me personally Spice Girls win hands down |
