Just pondering on the question of when we will know the person playing The Doctor in series 11, whether it be Capaldi still or someone new.
The way I see it there are a few elements that may make the release of the information come sooner or later, as follows:-
Firstly, the end of series 10 filming. If it is to be a new person for series 11, a regeneration filmed at the end of series 10, and Capaldi needed for no more filming, then they will almost certainly announce Capaldi's departure from the role before they even get that far with filming, which would suggest that if that were the case we would hear the news of Capaldi's departure in a matter of months.
If there is no news or rumours of a regeneration and no official announcements on the subject by the end of series 10, then that would only tell us that Capaldi must be carrying on until at least the 2017 Christmas special, and would still not indicate either way whether he would be staying on for series 11, or whether he was just regenerating in the 2017 Christmas special itself.
In that scenario, given that back in the old day's of a spring series, the Christmas special was always filmed around summer, that would indicate that the 2017 Christmas special would not need filming until the summer of 2017, and as such in that scenario they could leave it as late as early 2017 to announce the new person if there was to be one (though I would suspect the would have announced Capaldi's departure quite some time before that), or similarly keep the secret of Capaldi staying on to keep people talking about the show.
Then we have to consider past form - On the last two occasions, the new doctor was announced a year before there first full series, meaning that if there were a new person, I would think we would hear, at the latest, some time around the airing of series 10 (possibly before the start of series 10, to get people talking, and so it could be marketed as 'Capaldi's final series' in a bid to make it seem more special and boost ratings).
So, to conclude my own ramblings, from what there is to deduce, it seems to me that the revealing of the actor to star in series 11, whether that be Capaldi or someone new, could come as early as sometime before the end of the year, or as late as spring of next year, as far as I can tell. If Capaldi is indeed leaving though, I would, taking an educated guess, think that we would at least know that part of the information (if not the new actor) before the end of this year.
So those are my thoughts, musings, and logic on the subject. Anyone care to take a guess or come to a conclusion about when they think we might find out?.
