Awaiting the inevitable post from wolvesdavid that it's pointless starting the thread this early.........
We've established that it has indeed become a precident that FA Cup replays can clash with Champions League games. |

There might be some police restrictions (especially if Millwall are promoted), in which case Sunday lunchtime. |

First week is tough especially if West Ham are at home. Plus Jose, Pep & Antonio's first game plus Leicester as champions.
At least Leicester have shattered the streak of clubs on the 1st MNF going on to win the title.

But let's say a weekend throws up Liverpool v spurs and man city v arsenal pre cl.
With Fri option if sky pass, bt have to bite and take one, or sky get both. Without Fri bt could pass, knowing sky could only have one (I appreciate this rule not set in stone and exceptions, but it does seem a convention) In 2013-14, we had two double headers of Liverpool v Man Utd and Arsenal v Spurs and in 2014-15 we had Merseyside and North London derbies on the same weekend. Sky showed both games in 2013-14 but passed first pick in both weekends in 2014-15 - partly, I suspect because the first weekend preceded Europe. In 2015-16 the biggest double header (on paper!) was Everton v Liverpool and Arsenal v Man Utd. The first weekend preceded an international break so Sky took both games. Where Sky were scuppered by Europe was not being able to secure both Liverpool v Man Utd and Everton v Chelsea. As you say, this season Sky have the option of Friday nights, but, that does require Sky to burn a third pick. mlt11 has said in the past that he thinks that it is a little too convenient that there hasn't been a really big double header in the last three years (e.g. Arsenal v Man Utd and Liverpool v Chelsea). Such double headers would obviously favour Sky, so it will be interesting to see if that continues. While Leicester are not a big team, they are champions. As such, if we add them into the Big 6, there are 42 big head to heads of which at least four will be in the same round. Of course, if Leicester are out of contention come Christmas, their remaining games with the Big 6 won't be so important, but it's likely that there will be a double header of sorts in the first 14 weeks of the season. Why not post the 2017-2018 fixtures thread whilst your at it TLG86?

Would West Ham being at their new 'home' really merit an automatic TV pick? West Ham v Man Utd for first game, sure......West Ham v Stoke though? I mean, Sky waited until November 2006 to televise Arsenal at the Emirates (sure, different times)....wonder if there was something more to that.

I think the first home game in the Olympic stadium with all it's controversies will be a story but of course West Ham vs lower half team won't carry too much weight
I'd imagine Sky will fancy a Super Sunday at West Ham as soon as a decent game crops up and West Ham vs Big 6 (or 7) is always a relatively popular game to show over the years The mix of games will change slightly I think as Newcastle/Villa vs big side was also a popular choice and neither of the promoted clubs will attract many TV games in the way those 2 teams do. Sheff Weds would probably be featured a fair bit initially given the size of the club and how long they've been relegated for (if they beat Hull). |

I think the hype over West Ham's ground move has been vastly overblown. The Boleyn Ground was a brilliant place to go to watch games, but you'd have thought Anfield or Old Trafford was being demolished the way everyone was going on about it. Maine Road, Highbury and even places like Roker Park and The Dell were not afforded such media attention as the end of Upton Park. Is it because a fair proportion of our footballing media are West Ham fans?
Also, this new Olympic Stadium deal stinks really, and personally I would ignore their opening game there just to annoy all those involved in making the deal. Leicester have to be chosen for the opening weekend, like every other defending Champion has been before, but after that I think it comes down to which games look best. The new media fascination with managers first games will obviously take precedence, but a United or City game will not be a better watch just because some fella is stood on the touchline watching it. As for Conte at Chelsea, well I bet most people barely know who he is. I follow Italian football, but I am in the minority and I would reckon his arrival in England has barely caused a ripple outside of those who follow Chelsea. Whether it's Guardiola, Mourinho, Conte etc, after the initial ten minutes wondering what said manager is doing, the game takes over, and a crap looking game is still a crap looking game regardless of who is managing the teams. |

Easter weekend falls on the 15/16 April and is sandwiched by the first and second legs of the European quarter finals. My guess would be that the FA Cup semi finals would be the following weekend. I seem to remember a bit of a row in 2012 with Chelsea having to play their cup semi final on Sunday 15 April just before their Champions League semi final with Barcelona. Has enough time passed that Liverpool will play on the 15? It wouldn't be good if they were playing a Champions League team who had games on the preceding Wednesday and following Tuesday.

This year was the last memorial service at Anfield, but I don't know if that means April 15th is now "available" as a fixture date.

I'm pretty sure they (Liverpool) said they won't play on the anniversary regardless of the fact there will be no more memorial services.

BT will have West Ham's first competitive game at the Olympic Stadium
The third qualifying round of the Europa League on either the 28/7 or 4/8. |

One reason why the West Ham farewell got so much exposure too is that the last game was supposed to be against Swansea on the Saturday, and I read that West Ham had actually specifically requested a low key final home game so it didn't become an enormous circus. So the last game would have been a Saturday 3pm kick-off not on telly and all the celebrations would have got a minute on MOTD. But then the rearranged fixtures meant they got Man U as the last game. West Ham vs Man U is a pretty high profile fixture any season, they show it live more often than not, and then it also ended up being quite pivotal in terms of the league, so Sky ended up showing it live and it became a much bigger deal. I don't think the semi-finals will be played that weekend anyway, I don't think they've ever played them on the Easter weekend. No need to do it next season as the season can spread out a bit with no tournament at the end of it. |

The April 15 situation came up with UEFA in 2009 and they sorted things out to an acceptable conclusion then

But in such a scenario, Sky would take first, second and third pick (assuming they control third picks, which I think they do) anyway as they'd be getting two big games for the price of one first pick. And if they did pass first pick, BT would be more than pleased to have the choice of two big games and pick the one.
Sky need to pass 15 out of 33 weeks, better to pass and get one big game on a weekend and not have to lose another week. Obviously sky may take both, depending on fixtures. In both your examples, manutd involved. |

There's no guarantees that any broadcaster will show this game.
They showed Southampton last year. |

No of course, but its highly unlikely BT will miss the opportunity.
They showed Southampton last year. But regardless, it's still not the case that "BT will will have West Ham's first competitive game at the Olympic Stadium". |

And? Southampton aren't West Ham. It's entirely up to the home team if they want to sell the rights.
But regardless, it's still not the case that" BT will will have West Ham's first competitive game at the Olympic Stadium". |

Tottenham had a ridiculously large number of Monday night games at the end of last season.
Three out of four of their final games were on Monday night! That is not fair on Tottenham fans and was bad news for those people that only have terrestrial TV. It meant that a team fighting for the title were rarely featured on Match of the Day during the end of the season. Vey poor scheduling. Tottenham must have had fewer Saturday games than any other team last season. |

If I've worked it out correctly Spurs played 13 league games on a Saturday in 2015/16 (regardless of whether said games kicked off at 12.45, 3.00 or 5.30).
Liverpool played 11. Haven't worked out the totals for all teams yet, will check Man Utd. Surprisingly I can see Utd as having played 18 league games on a Saturday. Utd would have lost some Saturday league games because of their FA Cup Run, similarly Liverpool lost Saturday games due to their Europa League run, during which of course they were playing Thursday/Sunday. Without working out the figures for all teams it does look like Liverpool had fewest Saturday games. |
