Personally I'd like to see 8 groups of 4, then 4 groups of 4 before semis and final. Better for tv, the second group stage would be exciting, more games for last 16 losers and wouldn't require more match weeks |

I think it's a bit of a shame that quarter final replays have been scrapped. You can kind of see the logic of not having replays for the semis and the final as they are at a neutral venue, but it seems a bit unfair to have replays up to but not including the quarter finals.
Personally I would have liked to have seen some pragmatism from the FA regarding when the FA Cup is played. The constraints on replays varies from season to season. In 2015-16, for example, I think the problems could have been eased by playing the Third Round before Christmas. |

We’re often told competition formats can’t be changed mid TV contract - because the rights holder has contracted to supply the broadcaster(s) certain defined content.
That obviously didn't prove to be the case here. OK, it’s not a huge change but it’s not trivial either – the West Ham v Man Utd QF replay was one of the highest profile games the BBC had in this year’s competition. So BBC and BT would have had to be compensated. However, it may not be a total coincidence that the FA has just extended the BBC and BT’s rights until 2020/21 – ie dropping QF replays from next season was all part of the deal just agreed. |

Just tying up some loose ends from 2015-16, here are the ratings from the final day (source: BARB):
Man Utd v Bournemouth (Sky Sports 1): 491,000 Swansea v Man City (Sky Sports 2): 220,000 Stoke v West Ham (Sky Sports 3): 191,000 The first thing to say about this is that the total (903k) is down on the 1.45m recorded in 2014-15 and the 2.03m recorded in 2013-14. Admittedly the issues to be decided were not quite as important as the title and relegation, but still a disappointing figure that was compounded by the Man Utd game being called off. Just for completeness, I'm guessing that Sky showed the Swansea v Man City game on both Sky Sports 1 and 2, once the Man Utd game was confirmed as off, but if anyone can confirm that that is what happened that would be much appreciated. We also have the figures for the dual broadcast on the final Wednesday of the season: Sunderland v Everton (Sky Sports 1 - 19:00 programme start (19:45 kick off): 695,000 Liverpool v Chelsea (Sky Sports 2 - 19:55 programme start (20:00 kick off): 809,000 I think I'm right in saying that the ratings for the Liverpool v Chelsea game benefit from a shorter programme length, but I guess the flip side to that is the Sunderland game benefited from being on Sky Sports 1, having a decent build up and kicking off before the other game. However, I suspect the gap in the ratings is smaller than some were expecting and had the Sunderland v Everton game remained in the balance for longer, the gap may have been even smaller. |

Can confirm that did happen, only difference is that the half-time break and full time was done by Ed on SS1.

Major development re fixture congestion / scheduling:
FA Cup quarter-final replays scrapped with immediate effect. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36393608 I've said this before and I'll make no apologies for saying it again, but WHY can't The FA get it into their thick heads that cup replays DO NOT cause fixture congestion, the real cause is too many potential match days being blocked because of Champions League/Europa League games. We've had our differences on these boards but on this issue I'm in agreement with wolvesdavid, The FA should just stick two fingers up at UEFA and say "Sod you, we'll play when we want". |

well, it be handy for any games that got to be moved due to F.A cup, did you forgot there was some issues with two games going to replays and had to talk to Uefa to play the games on Champions league games midweek

At which point...UEFA will start witholding TV money etc from the English CL clubs, and you get into a legal nightmare.

Can't see UEFA having a leg to stand on really if that happened and the PL decided to take them to court over it, as they don't run the PL, the FA Cup, La Liga etc, they can't tell teams when to play or broadcasters when they can show games. Can't see the courts looking upon them favourably when basically they're saying "either sign this saying you won't clash or we won't let you into our competitions", which is in effect blackmailing them and forcing them to do as they want if they want to be allowed into their competitions.
We are the only country as far as I know that has cup replays, so we are only really falling into line with everyone else. |

The PL / FA don't want to be suing UEFA.
We want a constructive, positive relationship with them. If we fall out with them, then how will they treat us? - Maybe no more UEFA events here? eg No Euros, no CL / EL / Super Cup finals - Maybe adjust qualifying rules to "accidentally, on purpose" disadvantage us? eg Top 3 countries get 4 places in CL. England is currently ranked 3rd - so make it top 2 so we lose a place in the CL. etc, etc. In this sort of relationship you have to take a balanced, rounded approach. |

I think the point being made by Phil is that this does absolutely nothing to improve the FA Cup.
It should be possible to have space for all the fixtures (FA Cup and replays, League Cup, Champions League, Europa League, Internationals, and Premier League including rearranged fixtures) without a clash of the schedules, but it isn't because of poor fixture planning. Every single season, in September, October, and November, we have a constant two week break in the Premier League for qualifying internationals (which wastes a midweek every single time it happens,) and in March before the big international tournaments a two week break for friendly internationals, this season it happened to be during Easter weekend, a time when domestic matches could and indeed should be played. As for a "balanced, rounded approach" (mlt11's own words) how does this help things? If UEFA spread the group stages over 12 weeks, do we then reduce the Premier League to 14 teams, to avoid clashes? Where does it stop? |

And going back to your point, I disagree when you say it doesn't help the FA Cup. It'll mean far more exciting quarter finals, and bigger teams taking the game more seriously. Lower league teams can now steal a win too potentially. I firmly believe this is a really good decision by the FA. Of course, I would not like to see any more replays go, but on balance, I think there are far more positives to this than negatives. Now they just need to get rid of Wembley semi finals.... |

Well obviously not, as that would not be taking a balanced approach.
