Ack! Of course - I'm getting myself confused because of BT having two games!

I guess that also puts to bed the question of whether they know what the order of picks would be in advance, because if BT knew they were using both a 1st and 2nd pick that week then the NLD could have been a Package F pick...

Chelsea saying these are the dates for future announcements, although I remember them doing the same last season and it being delayed

December and January: 12 October
February: 12 December
March: 25 January
April: 27 February
May - first fixture programme: 6 April
May - second fixture programme: 13 April
May - third fixture programme (if there is one): 20 April
May - final weekend: N/A

That's very interesting Ziegler1988. I think you're right to be sceptical about some of the dates. I would expect the February picks to be announced a few days after the 12 December as that's the date for Champions League draw.

It's interesting that the December and January picks are being announced together. In reality I think this will only mean two extra weeks being announced as I'd have expected the Jan 2 picks to come with December's anyway. I'd expect the midweek (Jan 30/Feb 1) to be included with February's picks.

The decision to announce week by week in May seems sensible as Sky will take first pick whatever so there's no real disadvantage to BT. It's a months notice which won't be enough for the match going supporter and too much notice for those who don't want to see a dead rubber on TV!

Not sure of the obsession with picking Leicester games. I think this will be a massive regret.

Quite the opposite, I would think. They're the Champions and their success in the first few weeks of the season (or otherwise) will be something that is closely watched by a lot more people than normal, so it makes sense for them to get a lot of coverage in the early weeks. If they don't follow up on last years performances then it's still a big story, especially if they look like getting relegated. Even if they fade into mid-table mediocrity, both Broadcasters will have been pleased to get their quotas filled early so that they can focus more on the traditional "big" clubs as the season progresses.

Does anyone have a link to the spreadsheet which showed the viewing figures for Sky and BT for all games in the 15/16 season?

Cheers.

A few work colleagues today were mentioning how they were off to all of England’s Six Nations games, and to show how this thread takes over my life (I am joking at this point!) I noted that they were nearly all occurring on Sat evening.

Sat 4th and 11th Feb at 4.50pm against France/ Wales, Sat 11th March at 4pm V Scotland and Sat 18th March at 5pm vs Ireland.

Sat 4th Feb- (Chelsea V Arsenal, Leicester V Man Utd, Hull V Liverpool)
Sat 11th Feb- (Liverpool v Spurs, really poor alternatives)
Sat 11th March- Poor weekend
Sat 18th March- (Man City V Liverpool)

I wonder if Sky will see the above as good pass options, as BT may be unwilling to pick the above on those weekends.

However, as discussed, with Arsenal we presume on 3 picks from pack B, it appears that they will have to forfeit Arsenal V Man City if offered in Dec and go Merseyside Derby, or else Sky can pass Chelsea V Arsenal, Man City V Arsenal and Liverpool V Arsenal knowing BT can only pick one. Add in three poor weekends and Sky only need one more pass.

If BT want ratings they might be advised to pick teams that have Europa ties so they can move the match to Sunday and not clash with England games.

The only other noteworthy potential PL TV news concerning the CL draw is the big W13 Man City v Chelsea game. With City playing the following Tuesday that cannot be shown on the Sunday, so Sky (assuming they have this as a 1st pick weekend) will have to show it either at 12:30 Sat or at 20:00 Friday.

But the weekend follows the League Cup QF midweek, so scheduling the game on the Friday might be a no-no. On that weekend we also have West Ham v Arsenal which also cannot be shown on the Sunday, so BT may get that by default if they want it.

I don't think the League Cup will have an impact if Sky want both games.

Assuming all the relevant teams are still in the League Cup, Man City v Chelsea could be on Friday night (with both playing the previous Tuesday) and West Ham v Arsenal on Saturday lunchtime (both playing the previous Wednesday because of playing the previous Sunday).

It would restrict Sky's LC picks, but the PL is the far more valuable contract.

As a supporter of a team who have spent just four seasons ever in the top division, I'm all for an underdog, but Boro v Watford and Southampton v burnley imho is a poor super Sunday. Sorry!

As for gray 77 point, I think sky go Everton v Manu, whatever they want second (first two in any order) and man city on fri. Sky can get arsenal with a fifth as bt surely won't put arsenal on package b. Four arsenal picks would be quota suicide

Why Burton played on Tuesday and are playing tomorrow night again

Yes, good points about Arsenal quota issues. I think you're right, City v Chelsea will go on the Fri night (with Sky forcing both to play Tues in the LC as other have noted).

There is a trend developing though of big games not being played on Sunday's throughout the Autumn. For whatever reason alot of games usually seen on one of the Super Sunday slots are being played on Friday nights or Saturday lunchtimes, and of course Liverpool v United on MNF. The habit has been formed to expect marquee games on Sundays, but thus far this season that habit is being broken.

The fixtures really haven't fallen Sky's way so far this season. I wonder if this will tip the balance in terms of which route Sky take? If they wanted to go down the Arsenal route, I was thinking that they might give up Everton v Man Utd as they'd be getting Man Utd v Spurs the following week. But with neither Man City or Arsenal available for the Sunday, I reckon they'll want Everton v Man Utd in the Sunday 16:00 slot.

Man Utd is definitely the pinch point for Sky. Here are their fixtures up to the end of February and what I think could happen:

Everton (a) - Sky - Sunday 16:00
Spurs (h) - BT - Sunday 12:00
Palace (a) - BT - Midweek
West Brom (a) - not on TV - Saturday 15:00
Sunderland (h) - Sky - December 27 16:00
Middlesbrough (h) - BT - Saturday 12:30
West Ham (a) - Sky - Wednesday 19:45
Liverpool (h) - Sky - Sunday 13:30
Stoke (a) - Not on TV - Saturday 15:00

That would leave Sky with 10 Man Utd games for the last 14 weekends. If Sky want to go down the Arsenal route then they'll then get the Spurs game in Week 15 which all things being equal would leave them with nine Man Utd games - would that be enough for the last 14 weeks? I think the Everton game is a must now, so the only other option is to drop the Sunderland game and get a weekend Package G game later in the season. But the Moyes factor makes for quite a nice story (if he's still there that is!) and a second Man Utd game at Christmas would rate quite well.

Albeit it wasn't selected as a tv game, West Ham v Sunderland will now remain a Saturday 3pm game following the Hammers exit from the Europa League.

Why the surprise, Sky have more games with the new rights but the max no. of games they show per season is still 21, so the extra games will never be big teams which they aim to max out so you will end up with more games with minor teams playing each other.

BT on the other hand have an increase from 7 to 8 per team per season so there extra games will likely feature the big teams.

Great if you're a fan of a minor team but for fans of big teams Sky won't sure more than last season they are just paying way more and charging you a lot more as a result but your not actually getting any better games.

There are a number of Man Utd games that might be skipped in the following weeks though (W25 Wat (H), W27 Bour (H), W28 Soton (A), W29 M'boro (A), W30 WBA (H), W34 Burnley (A)), so I would have said they are in a decent position to take almost every other week...

That's true, brundlebud, and if Sky do go down the Arsenal route then I think it's likely that BT would take Burnley v Man Utd as a first pick in Week 34 - so that's a pass for Sky.

However, if Sky allow for themselves to show Sunderland (a) onwards (six games) then that leaves three picks for weeks 24 to 30. Man City (a) in Week 26 (also League Cup Final weekend) is a certainty, and then probably Leicester (a) in Week 24 and one of Southampton (a) or Middlesbrough (a) in Weeks 28/29 (probably the former as that is FA Cup Quarter Final Weekend).

So the question is, would Sky be happy to show three Man Utd games between Liverpool (h) on 14 January and Sunderland (a) on 8 April?

I have that down as a likely "pass back" of the first pick to package A, but it may still end up as a BT pick based on the other games that week (which look fairly weak) if Sky are limited on remaining Man Utd games.

Obviously there have to be 9 rounds with Utd not on TV somewhere, and they've been fairly heavily front-loaded...
