Here are my thoughts on the latest picks - apologies for the length, but there's a lot to say!
Week 24 is tricky. It could be that Sky used a first pick in Package D to get Leicester v Man Utd and then used a second pick in Package A to get Chelsea v Arsenal as Sky appear to be out of Package D games for Chelsea (their game at home to Hull in Week 22 looks like a Package D quota filler for Hull). But I reckon Sky would have put Chelsea v Arsenal in the Sunday 13:30 slot if they'd gone down that route. That Chelsea v Arsenal is in Package A suggests to me that it was a first pick and then Sky passed second pick for the final time to BT. Sky could probably be confident that BT wouldn't touch Man City v Swansea or Leicester v Man Utd as that would rule out Chelsea v Man City or Man Utd v Everton in the final midweek round. So that left BT with Spurs v Middlesbrough. Of course, that might turn out to be a fifth pick in Package B as BT would probably be comfortable to max out on Spurs given their final big head to heads are in Weeks 35 and 37 when Sky would want first pick anyway. That way, BT would then be able to get another Arsenal game in Package F. But as it stands, Everton v Arsenal looks like being the only Arsenal game in Package F.
Man City v Swansea fills the latter's min quota in Package C and is probably a fourth pick. This means that, in theory, Leicester v Man Utd was a third pick in Package G. However, as has already been pointed out, in Week 6 we had assumed that Man Utd v Leicester was a Package G game which had swapped with West Ham v Southampton (Package A - quota filler for both). But perhaps Man Utd v Leicester was from package D to fill the Leicester min quota. This seems a bit odd given that Sky went on to pick Leicester v West Brom in Week 11 in the Sunday 16:30 slot. I wonder if things didn't go according to plan for Sky and that they hadn't intended to pick Leicester v West Brom? One of the things that has surprised me is BT's apparent ability to use a first and third pick from Package B. I doubt Sky were unaware of this, but perhaps they'd assumed that once BT had picked Arsenal v Spurs with a first pick in Package B, they wouldn't want to use a third pick in the same Package, thus allowing Sky to get Chelsea v Everton as a third pick in Package G? Perhaps Southampton v Chelsea - apparently a fourth pick in Package D in Week 10 - was picked instead. But then I wonder what Sky would have picked in Week 10 had they got Chelsea v Everton? West Brom v Man City was off limits as they weren't paired with Arsenal in the Champions League. Perhaps they could have picked Watford v Hull as a quota filler? It was noticeable that Sky ended up with just one Hull game in the first 13 weeks of the season (Week 1 at home to Leicester).
On the topic of third picks, here are my thoughts on the weeks where I think Sky offered (or might have offered) third pick to BT: 1 (Sky happy to show Chelsea v West Ham in the Sunday 12:00 slot if it had come to it), 3? (Man City v West Ham could be a third pick in G), 4? (If I were BT, I'd have passed third pick back to Sky knowing that Sky couldn't take Liverpool v Leicester), 7 (Burnley v Arsenal looks like a third pick in Package G), 9? (If I were BT, I'd have passed third pick back to Sky if offered by Sky - Man City v Southampton could be a third pick from either E or G), 11 (Sky passed third pick hoping to get Chelsea v Everton in Package G?), 13? (Southampton v Everton looks like it's a third pick from Package G, but not certain), 14 (Sky passed third pick hoping to get it back as they wanted Bournemouth v Liverpool in Package G, but surprisingly BT took West Ham v Arsenal), 15 (Sky passed third pick, possibly because they'd have been happy to take Leicester v Man City in Package G), 21 (Sky passed third pick as they were happy to take Leicester v Chelsea in Package G), 24 (Leicester v Man Utd in Package G?).
This brings me to Week 25. As expected, BT took Liverpool v Spurs with a first pick and Sky filled the Bournemouth min quota in Package E. Given that it looks like Sky filled the Burnley min quota in Package C with their game at Arsenal in Week 22, it might be that Burnley v Chelsea is a Package G game. However, it is suspicious that Sky needed to show Burnley in A and Hull in C, yet ended up with their games in the opposite slots. I wonder if Arsenal v Hull is in fact the Package C game and Sky were allowed to swap it with Burnley v Chelsea, the Package A game? Arsenal are playing on the Wednesday so there shouldn't have been a problem with them playing on the Sunday, but I wonder if PL are trying to be a bit more helpful to our clubs in the Champions League? That would leave Sky needing to fill only two quotas - Arsenal and Spurs in Package E.
That is, of course, assuming that Watford v Stoke was a Package D game. I guess Spurs v Stoke is a first pick in Package D so that might suggest that Sky still have to show Watford in that Package, but I doubt it. My guess is Sky went for this game to get a Spurs game (BT having the other two in February), and because Sky had picked the other two Arsenal games in the month. It will be interesting to see when the rearranged games from Week 26 get played. I think the ban on playing (though not showing) PL games against the Champions League has been relaxed, so they might get rearranged relatively quickly. But I wonder if Sky would try to show Southampton v Arsenal should the former make the EFL Cup Final?
As has been noted, it would appear that Sky has 12 Package A games left with only 11 weeks to go which might suggest that there is another Package A game somewhere. Spurs v Man City, Arsenal v Bournemouth, Bournemouth v Liverpool and Man Utd v Tottenham are all possibles, but as they are all TalkSPORT games I think we have to assume they are from Package C. I think we should be looking out for Man City v Man Utd to be on 5Live as this would seem logical with Man Utd being in the Europa League on the previous Thursday.
So I think that would leave the following for each package:
A: 3 first picks, 5 second picks and 3 fifth picks
B: 2 first picks, 6 third picks and 1 fifth pick
C: 6 second picks, 2 fourth picks and 3 fifth picks
D: 6 first picks and 2 fourth picks
E: 3 third picks and 9 fourth picks
F: 0 picks
G: 3 third picks
I believe that Sky passed up the chance to use either a third pick in Package G or a fourth pick in Package E in Weeks 4, 9 and 26. It may be that any or all of Liverpool v Leicester, Liverpool v West Brom and Watford v West Ham are third picks in Package B, but if I were BT I'd have passed third pick in each of those weeks. If this is the case, Sky will have to use these picks after the actual picks for the weekend have been made. This becomes a lot easier once BT are maxed out of a club or two.
It looks like Sky are maxed out on Everton and Liverpool in Package E and still have one game left for Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City in Package G. And while Sky have all but fulfilled their requirements in terms of min quotas (just Arsenal and Spurs left in Package E), BT still have to show Bournemouth, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Southampton and Swansea. I still find it odd that BT put Palace v West Ham in Package F but I guess they had their reasons.
In terms of first picks I reckon Sky will offer Liverpool v Arsenal given that game has to be played on the Saturday. Whether or not Sky have to offer up another big game depends on what happened in Week 3, but if they do I think they will offer first pick to BT in Week 30 (Arsenal v Man City/Liverpool v Everton). I'm not sure what BT will do if they are going to have a choice, but it probably depends on how they see their quota filling playing out.
