I think they only had three scheduled midweeks. This looks like a good site in place of Statto:
http://www.football-lineups.com/tour...-2007/fixture/ Weird that Chelsea Newcastle moved to midweek from a Sat in Dec ?? |

The only thing that might change is the timing of the midweek round. Other than to piss managers off, I'm not sure why they'd use the 19th/20th over 12th/13th.
I'm still amazed they managed to fit everything in during 2001-02 when the season finished very early for the World Cup, plus there were more Champions League matches (with the second group stage) and 9/11 causing various postponements early in the season. |

Quite - why exactly do they need 6 fixtures between the draw for the 2022 finals and the Finals actually taking place? Are these European Championships qualifiers?
For 2022 it looks like the four fixtures between 30 May and 14 June are to compensate for the fact that there won't be international dates available in October and November. I guess these will be qualifiers for Euro 2024, which will be a bit weird given that we won't have had the World Cup by then. Going back to 2006-07, I was trying to work out how Liverpool v Newcastle was played in September. The reason is that there wasn't a weekend lost to internationals in November. There was a midweek international break (England drew 1-1 with Holland in a friendly), but this meant that there was one extra midweek available so the League Cup was one round behind what we're used to now. I guess Wigan v Arsenal wasn't played that week as it would have had to have been played on the Wednesday night (like Liverpool v Newcastle) as that midweek was preceded by a Super Sunday featuring Chelsea v Liverpool and Man Utd v Arsenal. And Sky would have wanted to show both. |

It looks like the individual leagues will be left to do their own reorganisation of their own competitions then, which quite frankly is pathetic.
Anyway I think we should ignore whatever agreements we have with UEFA, and go back to an early midweek round in August. |

Liverpool v Newcastle wasn't on UK TV. The reason Wigan v Arsenal wasn't played that week is that Wigan were in the second round of the Carling Cup.

I used to lik the midweek round in August, It made the Season start with a bang
With the TV contracts as they are now though, I fancy BT prefer their midweek rounds to be later in the year so that they have more meaning. I'm not suggesting they have any say in the placements of these rounds, but this season they've landed arguably the two most important games of the second half of the season in Liverpool v Chelsea and Chelsea v Man City, and they are both at really key parts of the season as well. |

Putting Qatar to one side - the two year cycle changes from 2018/19 - Autumn 2018 is the Nations League - or at least 4 dates of it are (out of 6) then the qualifiers are all in calendar year 2019 (10 dates). Nations League Final Four tournament in Summer 2019. Then the whole of the above repeats every two year cycle. |

Agreed. It meant that if your team lost on opening day they had a chance to get on the board quickly, or if they won it gave them a chance to really get on a roll. The CL play-off rounds put an end to that, although I do remember not too long ago the midweek round happened with 9 games, with the club in the CL simply playing their game at a later date.
I think the last time we had the August midweek was in 2007, when Liverpool played Toulouse at 4pm because it was a Bank Holiday in France, and I also remember Fulham playing Bolton in absolutely torrential rain where all the goals were caused by players falling over in the mud and the like. Brilliant fun. Quote:

I remember the season before Sunderland vs Liverpool was played during a League Cup midweek, because Liverpool were in the World Club Championship on the Saturday it was scheduled. I remember listening to it on Five Live Sports Extra with the odd commentary team of Ron Jones and Jacqui Oatley. Quote:

There was only ever an international weekend in odd-numbered years at that time, to do the play-offs for the tournaments. In even-numbered years there would just be a friendly in midweek, in 2004 for example we had that racist Spain vs England match.
It seems ridiculous that the FIFA dates have encroached on to the calendar so much. I would be in favour in playing our League season as normal in 2022-23 and tell the clubs to play youngsters when their international players are at the World Cup. |

I don't think 22-23 will be too bad, in fact the players will enjoy having a proper summer break !

Did this use to alternate with the March international date? Did we used to get a weekend international break in March in the seasons when there wasn't a tournament? I seem to remember England drawing 0-0 with Israel and beating Andorra in March 07.

Going back to the midweek fixtures in August, once the new champions league format comes in, it would mean only a maximum of 1 team is in a Europa League playoff.

Which unfortunately is still 1 team too many to mean we have a midweek PL round early on.
