I wonder if you could help. I am going to a wedding (service and reception) and need to wear a frock that can cater for both as im unable to change half way through. The wedding is in August and the last wedding I went to was about 20yrs ago so I really don't know what you are supposed to wear.

I only wear black which makes choosing a dress difficult as a lot of wedding outfits are colourful. I have seen this dress and I wonder if you think it would be appropriate. I was looking for a maxi dress as I have terrible scars all over my legs so I think it would be better to cover them up.

Many thanks,

It's a nice dress but I wouldn't wear it to a wedding.

I think that's a gorgeous dress and can see no problems wearing it to a wedding.

You could always add a bit of colour with accessories, such as bag, shoes, jewellery or maybe even a wrap if it's a bit chilly, although it would seem a shame to cover the top half of the dress where all the bling is!

It's a nice dress but I echo Croctacus I wouldn't wear it to a wedding. To me that is more of an evening dress.

Phase Eight have some nice black maxi dresses. Does it have to be all black? I think something like this one would be nice for a wedding http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Phase...efault,pd.html

I agree that this is much more in the line of an evening dress than a wedding guest dress. Wearing full length black to a wedding is perhaps a little 'off' also? I think it would be lovely in shape and style for a wedding if it were taken up to knee length.

It's entirely up to you, but I would not be in any way ashamed of the scars on your legs. I have a large winestain birthmark on my shoulder and no one has made any comment on it whatsoever when I leave it uncovered (entirely down to the style of dress I want to wear).

Thank you for your advice. I always wear black and unfortunately if I wear anything colourful I really feel uncomfortable. I haven't worn anything with colour in 30yrs. I do think I will go for a colourful shawl / wrap and perhaps handbag though.

My legs are appalling. I am prone to skin infections and my legs have holes in them where they have been eaten away. I could wear tights, but being August I figured a bit of air wafting around would be better.

I honestly had / have no idea what is the norm for a summer wedding. I was even watching Corrie last night and seeing what people were wearing !!! Is it just the colour as opposed to the dress that people object to or is the bling around the neck OTT ? I have some dangly earrings that are cubic zirconia that I was going to wear with it.

For me it's the bling around the neck and the actual straps that scream evening dress. Even without the bling it reminds me of a bridesmaid dress.

Sorry but I agree with the above. It does seem a little bridesmaidsy. I know you don't want colour but there are some nice black and white maxi dresses. Would this be an option or is it black only??

Also, have a look on shopstyle. Just type in maxi dress then refine it to black and put your price limit in and it will search most online stores for you. Saves you going from site to site!

Blimey - that shopstyle site was a revelation. I didn't know it existed.

OK, two different ones here. One I would have to wear tights with. Just to add (in case it makes a difference) I am a size 16.

This from Elvi is quite nice

also Evans page here has some good ones which you can dress-up or has a contrast with a mainly black background.

I like this one too - it seems to tick all the boxes. I agree with the others who think the original choice is far too much of an evening dress and not at all "wedding-y". Where I live women wear one outfit for the ceremony then change for the reception. I think that's a bit too much!

Seconded! If you don't mind wearing tights then the oasis one is really pretty.

I agree and I prefer the one you chose which with a short black bolero for the church ceremony can be whipped off for the reception.

How about something like this? I've had so many dresses from Lindy Bop and they're all beautiful. You'd need tights though.

a bit like the above I would go for an Ophelia an Audrey or a rhya with a bolero or shrug type top or even a light cardi

Thank you everyone. I do agree with you all now in hindsight about my original choice. I also love the 50s style frocks you have posted. 50s would suit my shape as I have a large bust and hips but a slim waist. You have also given me a few new websites that I didn't know existed. I am very grateful - and thanks again.

I've seen women wearing Lindy Bop (or similar) and they always look stunning. As you have an hour-glass figure I'd definitely show it off with that kind of style and wear tights. You'll look gorgeous

Oh wow that is stunning and ticks all the boxes. I hope the OP sees it before it's sold out!
