Perhaps this is not the appropriate place to ask but I hope someone can advise.

I think that somewhere I saw remote-controlled dimmer switches. They were probably like time switches that you insert into a mains socket; you plug your lamp into the device and you can remotely control the intensity of the light on, say, a table lamp via a remote control.

Do these exist or am I dreaming?

If you have a smart phone or tablet, have you looked into home automation lighting like 'Phillip's Hue'?
