He promised sharon that he would help cover up for bobby, but sharon didn't want max to get sent down so he told her he'd bribed the foreman to find him not guilty
He actually told him to find him guilty - if max was found innocent he thought the police would again turn their attentions to Ben. He couldn't turn bobby in cos he'd upset sharon so on his head this was the best solution.
