I thought the same. There seemed little choice on the page and everything else was simply set up. Page 176, the first word, the extra sheet in the bottle with the word already written on it. If that's nothing to do with the process and it was a lot more clever than that its still irrelevant if there seemed to be an obvious conclusion. Interesting to read others thoughts.

Yes the money bit was decent. I'm too dense to know how that's done. There must be a name for that trick all the magicians do it

thanks! But wouldn't you see the other page 176 while checking?

I think I found the lit up word so strange because it was already on the page. It had already been shown and didn't require any additional choice. Can someone confirm?

I watched it in slow motion,

you need a £20 note with a "receipt" glued onto the back.
a folded £10 note
you show the back side of the £20 ie the "receipt"
you hold the folded £10 behind hidden.
you then whip the folded £10 out at the same time as you fold the £20 note in half enclosing the "receipt" inside.

Prop books are far too complicated and would be easy to spot (note Simon inspected the book)

it can be done so much easier. IMO the key to the trick is the photo he uses.

Part of Page 176 (or w/e page it was) is glued to the back of the photo along one edge, which is inserted into the book when Alesha says stop.

Then you just put your finger between the photo and the bit of page at the open end to split them, making it look like page is part of the book.

The rest, from here, is all set up and ready to go.

Edit: Magic8Ball got there anyway

He ripped page 176 out of the book and put it inside the bottle earlier on. He writes the word BOTTOM on the underside of this page using soap or a similar substance. The paper is treated so it burns in a fixed way and leaves a black mark afterwards, but the soap prevents the section with the word bottom on from burning, therefore making it visible to see at the end.

He takes the corner of page 176 out of another copy of the book and slides it inside the first book. Whilst claiming to be flicking through the book he is actually locating page 176.

He opens the book to that page, but only shows us the corner of the page so you can't see that it isn't a full page and that the torn section from the original page is already there. He then palms the corner section before the reveal.
What he said.

Except the extra page 176 corner is hidden behind the photo at the start.

exactly, yes he has skills in executing the trick smoothly but basically we know how he did it already.
I'm surprised this is enough to win bgt, there were better illusionists in earlier series who didn't get to the final

So basically the same trick he did last time. Predetermined answers already in position.
He's still very skilful in the execution of it all, but I was a bit disappointed he didn't do something more different to his first trick.

Worst trick ever.

He wasn't flicking through the book, he very obviously placed the card exactly where he needed it to be.

He asked Alesha to remember the first word of the page he had very obviously chosen himself (therefore he had very obviously chosen the word as well as the page).

I am completely baffled as to why anyone could be impressed by this.
After reading that, I am delighted he won the public vote..................if only just to annoy you.

I look forward to your audition next year

What I want to know is was that a genuine line Simon read out from Amanda's book about her "panting in the grass"? Have to say Simon was on great form last night, he came out with some great banter.

EDIT: Going back to Richard, the way he revealed the "Bottom" on the page was a bit odd, it looked like he was rubbing it slightly - which might bear out theories above about some sort of self-revealing dye being in play...

It's like saying... and here is your card the 4 of diamonds... and for the big finale, here is a reveal of your chosen suit - diamonds! Yes I know, it's already on the card. Magicians are meticulous, I don't understand why he thought there was any magical skill in that bit.

The magician last year with the £50 seemed more complicated than this. I re-watched and yes you can see the £10 sliding up.

I thought he executed it relatively well. Perhaps would have been better if he'd made Alecia write down the page number and word and keep it hidden, then he did the reveal, and then had Alecia show everyone what she had written.

A basic trick poorly performed.

His sleight of hand skills aren't good enough and his performance isn't polished enough to pull off the tricks without being obvious.

Can't believe he got through. He wouldn't last a minute in front of Penn and Teller.

As all the tricks he does are copied from someone else and simple to do then it's good that children can look them up on Youtube and copy too.

As the card in the book trick is the same as on America's got talent - videos like this can show the children how to do them (2 mins in) -

Here's my take.

He could not have put that page in the bottle mid performance. So it had to be there all along. It was such a good fit for the page torn out, so we can also assume that it was the actual page from the actual book that had been removed before the show and placed in the bottle. Therefore I think we can say that the page that was shown to Aleshia was not the real page as it was in the bottle. So how did she see the page before it apparently went into the bottle?

I think using the photo of the judges to select the page was strange, why not just flick through with your fingers? Because he was hiding a top corner of the selected page (taken from a second book) behind the photo when he was flicking through. When he got told to stop he pushed it into the book, delivering the fake page corner, and then took it out again to reveal the fake page corner and when he put the photo in his pocket, the fake page corner went in there with it, so the book can be inspected after the trick.

Therefore, there was no free selection of the page at all, therefore there was also no free selection of the first word "bottom" and so that's essentially revealing the same forced selection twice.

I don't think he would be able to tamper with the book without gaining permission from the publisher, in which case that would out the trick.

What?

It's perfectly feasible to create a fake book for your own prop without anyone's permission. (Or indeed, it is possible to buy a pre-made tricked-out book for the trick and just slip the dust jacket from Amanda's book over it for the initial joke.)

The flaw in Magic8Balls theory is that the book was available for inspection after the tick, so that method of a faked book would have been spotted then.

Yep, your explanation is undoubtedly spot on.

I found the performance poor, personally, his handling of the book and the photo just drew suspicion on everything. A good magician will make it appear that the props are genuine and that everything has a reason for being there, not holding the book so tightly that nobody else can see anything, and meticulously moving a photo around for no apparent reason before stashing it away in your pocket... None of it looked natural at all. (Christian Lee actually performed his trick much better last night IMO.)
