The thing is as well there isn't that many people willing to watch Mansfield v Accrington instead of an international match. England get millions of viewers, even for friendlies.

None of the reports have made clear that the FL has actually done two separate deals with Sky without going to tender.

1) Deal for 2015/18 - at same time as SkyBet sponsorship

2) Extension for 2018/19 + FL option for 2019/20

There haven't been any reports re the rights price for 2018/19 or the 2019/20 option.

The reported £90m per year refers to 2015/18. I think we can take it as almost certain that the price for 18/19 and the 19/20 option is much higher than this - as this was done after the 2013/16 PL auction.

Note that the 19/20 option is the FL's option, not Sky's option - ie FL can make Sky show it at the option price but doesn't have to. Obviously FL won't exercise the option if they think that they can beat the option price in a new tender / contract.

The biggest problem the FL faces is competition from the PL and crucially this will get worse from 2019/20 when the PL goes up from 168 to (a minimum of) 190 live games. That means 22 fewer open slots - we don't know what those will be but I imagine the vast majority of both Fri and Mon slots are going to be filled with PL.

The above can only make the FL less attractive to broadcasters. Of course FL TV games could clash with PL TV games (indeed there is a regular overlap now between the Sun 12pm FL and Sun 1.30pm PL). But it is obviously much less attractive commercially.

I'm sure the FL will go to tender next time but I wouldn't be that confident of them getting that big an increase. We can't know for sure but presumably the reason they didn't beforehand was partly the SkyBet aspect and also maybe Sky made a "take it or leave it" offer a bit like BT did with the CL and the FL didn't think they could say no.

Finally one other aspect is that the FL and PL rights now end on the same date (ignoring the FL option). That then begs the question - should the FL go to tender first or wait for the PL and go second? Interesting decision.

They could also expand by 10 live games in league one and also 10 live games from league two
live terrestrial coverage would compliment the EFL highlights and more promotion for the major pay tv partner”

Agreed; that BBC deal between August 2009-May 2012 with 10 live Championship games and League Cup Semi-Finals and Final live was good, but sadly, that was one of the first victims of the Licence Fee freeze which the Tories imposed on the Beeb, following their return to power - in conjunction with the Lib Dems - in 2010.

The highlights deal from August 2012-May 2015 was announced in May 2012 with budgets cut further still to the coverage. By then, the Football League Show had already changed to a pre-recorded show from a live one, for which it was for the first two seasons of the preceding deal.

Tricky one - there may have to be some overlap - but I think I'd be tempted to go before the PL if possible.

Important typo in post 502. It should, of course, say:

"The reported £90m per year refers to 2015/18. I think we can take it as almost certain that the price for 18/19 and the 19/20 option is much higher than this - as this was done after the 2016/19 PL auction."

You would have thought that the Football League would want to go after the Premier League wouldn't you, hence why they did the 1 year extension in the first place?

Looking at the Championship fixture list for Saturday 4th February, all of the matches has at least one of teams in the FA Cup 4th Round draw at the time the draw is being made. Therefore if Sky need to show a game on Monday 6th February - providing 4 weeks is adequate notice - they'll have to dip into the League 1/League 2 quota and I've come up with a short list of 3 they may consider to choose 1 from:

L1 - Southend v Scunthorpe
L2 - Grimsby v Luton
L2 - Leyton Orient v Carlisle

What does anyone think is likely to happen, when the next set of rights go to tender.
