Gail was appalling to Carla!

I thought Gail acted completely out of character tonight.
While I can understand Gail would be feeling extremely hurt on her son's behalf and if walloping Carla wasn't bad enough, but to then gloat that she isn't a mother was an extremely callous thing to say considering Carla's miscarriage.
I just don't buy that Gail would stoop that low....was more like something Tracey would come out with!

Tonight I was reminded of the Gail of yesteryear. Gail isn't some simpleton - you don't mess with her family because she always comes out fighting (ask Eileen!)

Nick is her favourite. Gail never warms to his partners but she got on board with Carla in the end, which was probably a struggle for her. Then she discovers all this on his wedding day.

I was more annoyed at everyone telling Gail to shut up and behave (in so many words). Gail was actually on form tonight and about time too.

She didn't hit Carla hard enough

IT was a return to form for Gail tonight. Pure drama and none of the silly tomfoolery that the character has been saddled with over the past number of years.

That's all well and good but you know she'll be back to "simpleton" mode again after this week with the horrific, inconsistent writing.

She didnt slap her hard enough to wipe the eternal miserable expression from her face.

I agree it reminded me of Gail during Sarah's pregnancy (with Bethany) when she defended Sarah against Candice's mother and Blanche when they were both saying nasty things about her.

Gail before her recent poor years was a mother who defended her children.

I don't think it was particularly out of character. Gail has always been overprotective of her precious Nick and has been a right cow to his previous girlfriends, particularly poor Natasha.

Exactly. If anyone wants to hear the stuff Gail says in the heat of the moment just google the moment Gail tries to confront Todd for breaking up with Sarah

Well, yes, but in her defence the kids have all (as has Audrey) the stance that they know better, that she embarrasses them when she talks and she needs to pipe down. Look at them all tonight telling her basically she was wrong to confront Carla!

Gail I think had to regress a little to give the kids room to breathe as adult characters and to the show's credit, all 3 of her kids work perfectly fine away from Gail and it's quite rare to see 3 characters born in the show working as independent adult characters.

But it's time to build Gail back up, and the first step towards that is to put her with a man who treats her like an adult (and not a comfort blanket ), and put her back out there into the world of work. I mean she used to run her own business and was receptionist at the medical centre. She's a very capable woman!

Was great to see Gail turning back into the lioness of yesteryear.

Of course Gail would give Carla a slap round the chops; how could you forget her infamous fight with Eileen in 2004?

I think it's a shock to the system as we've become used to Gail the buffoon in recent years. But yes this is the Gail of the early noughties who always stood up for her kids.

They need to take her back to this full-time. A little bit of comedy is fine but in recent years they have overdone it with Gail and Sally. (Deirdre too before Anne Kirkbride's tragic passing). She somehow needs to regain control of her house and David needs to stop calling her Gail and treating her like an idiot. It's jarring.

I love that scene! Classic!

The decline of Gail is one of the biggest failings of 2010's Corrie IMO

Yes, how dare Gail have a go at Carla, doesn't she know that everyone must pander to her regardless of whether or not she is in the wrong?

Not remotely out of character. The love of Gail's life had been slighted by another woman so of course she would hit out. Still I imagine Nick will be back sharing the box room with her now so that should cheer her up.

PS Didn't Nick cheat with Kylie on his last wedding night? But yes Gail, Carla is evil incarnate and Nick can never do wrong

Ah yes, bring up Nick's faults if it means deterring Carla's wrong doings.

Carla has cheated and slept behind her past fiancée's backs many more times than Nick.

Nick cheating on someone else in the past doesn't justify Carla's actions. It's completely unrelated to Nick and Carla's relationship. As already posted, Gail will go after those that hurt her children!

If they want to redeem Gail, now is the right moment - Sarah, David and Kylie need her what with the body about to discovered and Nick's life is in ruins. Now is the time to step up.

Still, I hope Eileen mentions the family learning murder tips from Richard Hilman. Gail is long over due another street fight!

I loved it and it was old school Gail. It reminded me of how great she was when I was a kid.

They are all big hypocrites, Carla had affairs with Liam and Peter while they was both married and she was cheated on by Peter and then you have Nick who cheated with Leanne (while with Peter) and Kylie and they are surprised by Carla spreading it about.

classic corrie that was, they even managed to thread humour through that with the village people quip why can't corrie do scenes like this now...well written and well acted.

Sublime. 2004 was the last year that Coronation Street was genuinely fantastic. Weaving comedy and tragedy together in the most ingenious ways, often in the same scenes. Those scenes really epitomise Corrie for me, with drama and comedy sitting side by side with absolute ease.

There was some really daring dialogue as well: 'You can't come out and face me like a real man, can you, cause you're not a real man!', 'It's the only chance you're going to get of a grandchild off that pervert!', 'At least she's normal!' and the ultimate 'Need an AIDS test after going with him!'. You just wouldn't get dialogue like that now.
