Unacceptable offensive terms tonight
Tonight we heard Alisha refer to a group of male singers as 'chocolate men' something which should surely be considered totally unacceptable in this day and age, it was like something you'd expect from Bernard Manning in the 1970s.
If that wasn't bad enough, we then had to endure Amanda Holden repeatedly referring to some dancers of Oriental origin as 'subhuman'. None of these terms are acceptable in this day and age, and certainly not on a family television show. What's Ofcoms number? |

I'm not usually one to defend Amanda, but I think it was clear she meant no disrespect - they had robotic makeup on to appear only half human. Did she say 'subhuman', a poor choice of wording if so but she wouldn't have meant anything by it.

I think Amanda was searching for another word but ended up using subhuman - incorrectly - twice....
Probably wanted "part-human" for which cyborg would have been better!

Political Correctness can rot in hell.
It's only a TV show. |

Don't forget David's "That made me tingly downstairs".
Dresses worn by Amanda and Alesha tonight were pushing the boundaries of acceptability as well. |

Often the best way to decide if something is unacceptable is to think of it being said by or to someone else.
What if Simon had made Alisha's comment, or perhaps someone had called the 12 year old girl 'subhuman'? It's a fair point about David's risqué comments, although they weren' t directed towards someone else, and follow in a British tradition in the style of the carry-on films. You are quite right that it's very outdated humour though. |

And you know what they say - the 70s were like marmite, you say tomato, and I say tomayto. |

Amanda clearly intended that as a compliment, even if she didn't use quite the right word. She was obviously saying they appeared not completely human, which was actually the effect they were trying to achieve in their dance. No connection with their race whatsoever, I don't know how anyone could think that was some kind of racism!
Alesha only got away with what she said, because she is black herself. |

Are you all for real?
"Chocolate men" was clearly meant as a compliment, and as a black woman, Alesha clearly did not mean it offensively. It was clearly meant in a complimentary context. Give me strength... As for "subhuman"... That would not even register with me as being offensive?! She was just referring to how their act of contortion was not how you would normally see a human act. HOW IS THAT OFFENSIVE? You all need to get some fresh air and stop reading the daily mail. |

Alesha in hindsight probably wasn't too bad, it just felt very unnecessary |

I think Amanda meant to say "superhuman" - which would have made more sense. Though, she did call a contestant "trash" once, so who knows.

Though in all fairness I dont think Amanda meant it as its meaning subhuman adjective UK /ˌsʌbˈhjuː.mən/ US /ˌsʌbˈhjuː.mən/ disapproving › having or showing behaviour or characteristics that are much worse than those expected of ordinary people: Their treatment of prisoners is subhuman. As for chocolate men well then what if Amanda had said " what a lovely group of white men " to a group ? It may not be racist but its blooy rude . |

Alesha thought she was safe to say that due to her ethnicity.
Amanda meant the comment as a positive but muddled up the words. David, for once, was being 'innocent' in his down below comment but it came across a crude unintentionally. IMO. ![]()

But I think it's fair to point their comments out so that they can watch them back and cringe at their own comments like we cringe when we watch them speak every episode. I don't know what was going through Alesha's head at the time, but I think with Amanda it was just a demonstration of how inarticulate she is as she tried to grasp for a word in her head which was probably more like half-human, unhuman or inhuman. In fact I think she probably meant inhuman or unhuman but the word didn't come to her because she's as thick as mince. |

What I find incredible is the fact that Amanda clearly had no idea of the meaning of what she was saying (I hope not anyway). Moreover why did the producers not point out the error in an ad break so she didn't say it again. Amanda Holden - very attractive but not a lot up top and she's in a responsible position commenting on the future life of others.
Alicia, I personally didn't find offensive, perhaps because of her own ethnicity. Which I think is part of the problem, we tend to think too much about how we ought to think about something when somebody slips up like this. Like "Should I be offended or not?". I don't think either of them had any ill intent. I just think it's funny to see people make a faux pas like this on a national primetime mainstream TV show being watched by millions. They make great clips to watch in compilation videos on Youtube. |
