Wish You Were Here: Royal Mail stamps honour 50 years of Pink Floyd

A new set of stamps is being issued to honour Pink Floyd, featuring some of the band’s best known album covers.

The 10 stamps will mark 50 years since the group turned professional, and will include album covers such as The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here.
Looking forward to these I must admit!! Not a stamp collector but a huge Pink Floyd fan, they are still the best band I've ever seen live, so ordering a set is a "no brainer" for me!!

Wonder why Atom Heart Mother is there. The band virtually disowned that album. Though David Gilmour has played Fat Old Sun on his solo tours.

The Division Bell would have been a better choice.

For musical reasons The Division Bell over The Endless River certainly, as the latter is mostly leftovers.

Atom Heart Mother has a more iconic cover than some better albums, especially when reduced to stamp size.

Deserved recognition, regardless. One of the greatest bands ever.

True Meddle is a very good album but the cover is nothing really.

I have a number of books on Hipgnosis and their artwork, including one signed by Storm Thorgerson, as their work features on the album covers of many bands I like.

What I find remarkable about their work is that is was all done for real. The cover of Pink Floyd's A Momentary Lapse of Reason, for example, really did use hundreds of hospital beds arranged on the sea shore, it wasn't created digitally.

Yes that shot On The Wish You Were Here album of the man doing a handstand in water. The guy nearly drowned as they took ages to get the shot right.

God knows why this group is considered worthy of appearing on our stamps twice in 7 years.

In 2009 it was a series of classic albums, in 2016 it is the 50th anniversary of the formation of Pink Floyd, so completely different circumstances. Why shouldn't that be recognised?

You might not like them but million of people around the world do, as shown by the fact their final album went straight to #1.

The cover for that of course is just white bricks. While Iconic I think the one they have made. With the images of the hammers on The Wall from the live show, Is a better idea.

Because they are one of the biggest, and most popular bands of all time. I doubt anyone will ever again reach those levels.

Maybe U2?

It happens though that Pink Floyd's album covers actually make good stamps.
Was someone thinking ahead?

I think Joy Division's album covers would work as stamps as well.

And am I the only one who really likes 'The Endless River?'

i don't think it would look that great on a stamp. if they added the title in scarfes writing it doubt it would look much better really. the other artwork could have looked good, but i'd say that would be better in it's own set. maybe a 40th anniversary

I'm all in favour of bands and singers of note getting a postage stamp. But 15 Pink Floyd stamps in 6 years?? It's a joke. And only being done by Royal Mail to get money off people, just like the Star Wars stamps.

I kike The Endless River.

Album covers were of great importance back then too. The Moody Blues had some great ones.

You do know that traditionally the post office issued stamps to mark important events, not use them as an income stream, don't you? The irony is that these desperate attempts to flog endless issues to the public are causing more and more collectors to abandon buying Royal Mail's collectables completely. A quick look at the stamp collecting press and websites clearly shows that. Smart business move, killing the goose that lays the golden egg...

I'm was just thinking U2 were probably close to being as famous as Floyd. U2 have already appeared on Irish stamps.

is that an actual fact, and if so can you actually prove it?

I'm sure you are aware now that the royal mail is a plc, so things have changed. but I would imagine they would use certain things as income streams even before they turned into a plc, but happy to see your evidence that proves that's not the case, even though it's not relevant now

that may be your opinion, but who the hell wants to collect stamps in 2016? back in the 1950s there were a lot less things to do to spend time, but this is the age of Netflix and spotify and smartphones, so making products that may appeal to people who may not otherwise care about buying them may be considered a good idea. I don't collect stamps but as a Floyd fan will probably buy a set as it's only £8, which would have cost pennies to make so some profit for royal mail plc
