Back at college in the early 70's we didn't cover valves at all - except part of ONE day, and that was because the normal lecturer wasn't there, so the replacement one did a little on valves. Bit strange really, as almost all the sets that we worked on at college were mainly valve ones, and the rest of the week at work there were still lot's of valve gear about.

As already mentioned, that was perfectly normal - and in fact Hacker were one of the very few who did often fit 'proper' tone controls as we understand them today.
