Was the van crash in Corrie done on the old set?
Hedonist27

After watching Tyrone's van crashing through the wall of the house I began wondering if that stunt was filmed on the old set after the public tours closed. After spending all that time and money on building the new set it seems strange that they wouldn't use the old set to do it given that it's being demolished anyway and they can always put up mock scaffolding etc up around the house on the new set to tie in with future scenes being filmed there.

What is everyone else's take on this and does anyone know if it was indeed filmed at the old set?

(Just to clarify, I don't necessarily mean the whole scene just literally the van crashing through the wall.

It could have been filmed on a completely mocked up set away from actual street set altogether.

It's possible but unlikely. The old set still had gails granny flat as the garage and I doubt they will spend time making it look like the new room just to destroy it when they already have the room built on the new set.
Also it's likely if they filmed it on the old set there would be other scenes after that would all need to be filmed there as well and I doubt they'd want to keep filming between the two sets, plus all their filming equipment is at the new set, doubt they'd want to keep transporting thing between sets.

This is the most likely answer.

It was filmed on the new set, of course. ITV no longer owns the old site.

Aside from the grannex, the bistro frontage has changed since the set move and the garage has changed its name.

If you look at the wide shot of Tracy before Carla drives her car at her, you can see that the street is too big for it to be the old set.

I very much doubt it.

Even on the new set, Gail's garage/annexe is just a facade, so it would have only been a case of smashing up a few bricks and the window. The damaged garage/annexe will be needed for follow-up scenes of them discovering 'the body', which would have to be done on the new set anyway.

I imagine that a mocked up set would have been built for the interior shots with Fiz and Tyrone 'trapped' in the pick-up inside the garage/annexe. They did a similar thing for the corner shop and Kabin during the tram crash.

Is the old set being completely demolished? That sucks! Suppose I should've booked on one of those tours.

The old set was demolished in around December/January time so no it wasn't filmed there.

But as someone said earlier it's very likely they built an exterior set for these special scenes.

The demolition started to take place some time in April. Towards the end I think. At the beginning of May they released some photos of the studios before the demolition, so it was definitely still around. It is possible filming those scene could have coincided with the beginning of the demolition.

Why have they demolished it? Could they not have just moved the sets?

Is there a video tour of the old set available from Corrie?

It hasn't been demolished yet actually, though will be at some point.

They've started on it:

The demolition crew had started work by late March when I was last in Manchester which would have been just before this was filmed. I took some photos from Great John Street. If Corrie was going to be filming there they would have delayed it.

ITV said that key elements are to ve kept, buy it is undecided as to what will happen with them. I know MOSI asked to have some stuff in Jan, but heard no further than that. MOSI is only over the road and they already have the Granada sign so I expect they'll get some more stuff.

I thought it was filmed on a real street, but the interiors were studio sets? Why not just sell the houses on the street and help the shortage instead of demolishing them?

The very original set was from a real street I think. I'm not 100% sure. However, the last set they were using couldn't have been used for housing as they were so small inside.

Allied London have the old Granada site now and I believe there are to be a number of apartments built as part of one of the later phases of development.

The very original set was all filmed on a set indoors.

So have we come to the conclusion that they didn't film this stunt on the old set?

Coronation Street has never been filmed on a real street. As TayTay says, the very first set in 1960 was inside the studio at Granada. It wasn't until 1968 that an outdoor set was built but this was little more than a facade of bricks, doors and windows. Even the later incarnations of the set weren't 'real' houses. Again, as TayTay points out, the houses are tiny and even if they were big enough, I doubt they would even meet building regulations for human inhabitation.

Brookside filmed in 'real' houses which were bought and owned by Channel 4. A number of years after Brookside was axed Channel 4 sold the site and the houses are now residential with 'real' people living there.

The only British soap I know that has filmed on a real location in the past is Emmerdale when it was filmed in the village of Esholt. The village had 'real' inhabitants living in it at the same time Emmerdale was filming. Emmerdale has since moved to a purpose-built set on the Harewood Estate.

TayTay, you might be thinking of Archie Street, where the first title sequence was shot. That was all they ever filmed there as they recreated it in studio, with some changes to suit the programme including reducing the number of houses and adding the Rovers Return.

The first outdoor set was the Grape Street set in 1968. At first they simply placed the old wooden frontages from the studio next to a viaduct - it wasn't until the switch to colour that they built the street in brick. Later sets were simply upgrades of the first. Even the current set isn't quite to full scale!
