Say I buy a new Samsung TV, which will no doubt have pending firmware updates, how are these received? Is it over the wi-fi or through the aerial?

Incidentally, have Samsung got their smart hub in order now? I'm looking at the j5500 series which i know is a 2015 model, however many reviews complain about how ITV player isn't/wasn't available, likewise other 'on demand' services seem to be a bit hit and miss.

With modern smart TVs I suspect they mostly update via the internet. My TV certainly does and I shudder to think how many hours I would have to wait for half a gigabyte of data to download over however many kilobits per second is allocated to the engineering channel on Freeview!

And yes the last couple of updates for my TV have been 500MB + in size.

Do you have any experience with Samsung's smart hub then? Is it the same across samsung's range? I've only really read reviews for the j5500 series and the issue of availablility of iplayer/itvplayer/demand5 etc seems very hit and miss.

Almost all TV's now update via the internet, so no internet connection, no updates.

The time of OTA (Over The Air) updates is long gone, it was FAR too expensive and restricting.

Incidentally, many updates now are well over 1GB.

Never owned a Samsung TV. The only one's I've used have been "dumb", ie no Smart features of any sort.

But ITV Player and the Channel 4 offering do seem to be much less common than iPlayer and Demand 5 from what I've seen lurking on various manufacturer's websites.

Only ever had one update for my 2010 model Samsung which I applied by download to a USB memory stick then plugging that into the TV.

I bought a 32" J5500 5 a few weeks back. It does include BBC iPlayer, ITV hub, All4 and Demand 5 (as well as many other apps, too).

I was told by a Samsung helpline operative a couple of yrs ago to leave the TV on standby and our WiFi hub on overnight and it will sort itself out.
It did.

We've got a 50inch Sony Android TV and when it gets an update you might as well go away for a couple of hours, if you own an android phone and you've received an OTA update then you will know exactly the procedure

Very different to my LG. It will pop up a box saying there is an update available and if you select OK to download it it just does it quietly in the background and you can continue watching telly or whatever.

Then when it finishes another box pops up to tell you the new version will be loaded next time the TV comes out of standby. Apart from a quick OFF - ON cycle (during an ad or programme break for example) no disruption caused.

Not 'that' different to the Sony Android sets, they download the update in the background, but the actual update itself takes 30-60 minutes to happen, during which time you mustn't unplug the set, as shown by a 13A plug and a 'no entry' sign on the screen

After that it reboots, and as part of the process updates 100-200 apps as it does so, numbering them on screen as it goes.
