Manchester United 0-0 Exeter City (not shown on TV.) (Exeter City were in the conference at the time.)
Burnley 1-0 Liverpool. (Burnley were in the championship at the time.) The match was shown on TV.

From now on all of Manchester United's matches in the FA Cup have been shown starting with the replay against Exeter City.

3rd round replay - Exeter City 0-2 Manchester United
4th round - Manchester United 3-0 Middlesbrough
5th round - Everton 0-2 Manchester United
QF - Southampton 0-4 Manchester United
SF - Newcastle United 1-4 Manchester United
Final - Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United - AET - Arsenal win 5-4 on penalties.

In this season I don't think many would argue about the 6 matches being shown. The first was Manchester United going away from home to [then] non league Exeter City. They then faced a couple of all Premier League ties with Middlesbrough and Everton, before the QFs onwards are all shown automatically anyway (and Southampton, Newcastle United, and Arsenal are all Premier League teams in this season.)

Middlesbrough were a team that had just won the league cup at the time and were in Europe.

Fair play, it might be no harm having an archive such as this on this thread.

I would point out, seeing as the whole debate has come from people moaning about Manchester United being on as opposed to somebody else, a list like this serves no real purpose without people being aware of what other choices the TV companies could've made - I'm not saying you should post it, it can be researched.

It might also be helpful to highlight which broadcaster showed which game, if you have that information. As I have said, it is a misnomer to talk about so many consecutive fixtures when there have been 6 TV companies doing the picking across the years - BBC, ITV, Setanta Sports, Sky Sports, ESPN and BT Sport.

I have gone back to the friend who told me about the Liverpool stat; he actually got it from a Liverpool website last year when this whole "consecutive" issue popped up in the newspapers. Ironically they were complaining from an opposite point of view ie that Liverpool should have had every tie shown too. He can't remember which site and also says I may have taken the word "couple" too literally (wolvesdavid might chuckle at that lol).

As he couldn't be definitive I have done a quick research and have found that there was actually three Liverpool ties altogether not shown - apart from the one mentioned by wolvesdavid himself there were two others occuring in the same season, back in 2007/8.

The third round tie at home to Havant & Waterlooville, in which the Blue Square South club went 1-0, then 2-1 up. I believe it was live in Ireland.

Then the following round another home tie, this time a defeat to Barnsley, wasn't televised.

I can't confirm whether or not any replays were shown live and there is a possibility that, just like the tie mentioned earlier, that one or more of the ties moved to a Sunday might have been on police advice. I don't think there was any other Sunday games not televised though.

I will point out that the above isn't exhaustive....

Man United and Liverpool could have drawn each other in this round and you'd still have had people arguing that it shouldn't be picked.

2004-05: Stoke (h), Wolves (h)

Just face the fact that Manchester United and Liverpool are by far the biggest two clubs in the country. They will always be shown, no matter the opposition.
TV companies want viewers and advertising. These get them.

The problem with neutrals is they are transient, they can't be guaranteed to tune into any tie other than one featuring their own team. Only very few combinations of teams can guarantee numbers.

Manchester United and Liverpool guarantee an audience. TV is in the business of attracting an audience for the sake of advertisers and shareholders.

My dislike of Liverpool is as obsessional as yours of Manchester United. It goes with the territory, However, I have no issues with them being shown, despite it being of no interest to the neutral. I won't be watching but it is right that as big an audience as possible should be catered for.

If it had got worse and led to an abandonment, they'd have likely just played It on third round weekend, and scheduled the tie at Anfield for the replay date.

Yes, and that did happen with a live second round replay on BT a few seasons ago, during that period when every match Lynsey Hipgrave was presenting was called off. The rearranged tie was played on third round weekend, the third round tie was played on the replay date. I remember someone here speculating BT would show the rearranged game, but they didn't.

There's been plenty of examples of live matches being abandoned or postponed in the FA Cup. In 1996 Shrewsbury vs Liverpool in the fourth round ended up being played on fifth round weekend because it was repeatedly postponed.

Indeed, and going back a decade before then ITV's live 'sixth round' match ended up being a fifth round replay on a Sunday afternoon between Man United and West Ham. As said, plenty of other examples too.

The difference between the second round and others is that the last couple of weeks before the next round are lost to the Christmas and New Year programme, making it difficult to rearrange if postponed now. However, with a gap of five weeks between the rounds it should usually be ok to get the tie completed by Christmas.
