I always wondered how broadcasters decide which matches they will show. Is it a case of BBC saying we'll show the Merstham v Oxford match or will they select a few potential live games and then pick one.
On the live games other possibilities are Alfreton/Gateshead v Newport because Newport are struggling at the bottom of league two and could easily slip up, Boreham Wood v Notts County because they lost to Salford last season and that's an awkward fixture and Eastleigh v Swindon because either a team that got to the third round last season will get knocked out or Eastleigh will beat a league team. |

Are there any TV Saturday games? Merstham only have a capacity of 2000, we took over 1300 to Bolton. So it's going to be hard to get a ticket!

Agreed on both counts - especially the latter: how could they win something 14 years before they existed?
(PS - MK Dons don't consider themselves to be the 1988 FA Cup winners; in fact, they now consider themselves to have been founded in 2004.)

I predict the live TV ties will be the following:
Merstham v Oxford (BBC, Friday 7.55pm) Eastleigh v Swindon (BT, Saturday 5.30pm or Monday 7.45pm) Maidstone v Rochdale (ditto) |

You have partial knowledge; the bit you don't know is that they also returned trophies to Wimbledon, so Wimbledon actually has the replica of the 1988 FA Cup - would hardly be the case if they hadn't won it.

Actually the first and second round TV picks are frequently dominated by the so-called big teams. So don't be surprised to see the like of Charlton, Portsmouth, Bolton, Sheffield United or Coventry feature irrespective of the "quality" of the opposition or potential interest of the tie in terms of a possible upset.
I seem to recall Nottingham Forest featuring in every round for TV between 1 and 3 a few years back when they were in the League 1 - for a while I thought FA might stand for Forest Again |

Surprised no ones mentioned Yeovil Vs Solihull Moors.
Yeovil struggling in League 2, Moors mid table in conference premier. Could be a good tie. |

The non league v league ties, with the non league teams at home, are as follows:
Southport v Fleetwood St Albans City v Carlisle Alfreton or Gateshead v Newport Boreham Wood v Notts County Eastleigh v Swindon Maidstone United v Rochdale Merstham v Oxford Utd Any 3 of those 7 ties would be good for TV. I think BBC will pick Merstham v Oxford United. BT will pick Eastleigh v Swindon, and Boreham Wood v Notts County. |

I would be very surprised if a club in the Isthmian Premier Division did not have good enough floodlights.

Certainly Sheffield United who have been there for ages. If they were that big a draw Sky would be picking them all the time when they show League One but they don't. You can say, oh, they showed Leeds all the time when they were in the lower leagues, but they had a succession of attractive draws - against the tiniest minnows and then against teams like Man U and Spurs. We never had them when they were at home to a non-league team, or away to another League One team. Quote:

Yes but floodlights for a Live TV game need to be so much better than floodlights to play a Ryman League game

I think Eastleigh v Swindon Town is probably the pick of the First Round ties. Eastleigh were the only non-league team to reach the Third Round last season and are hosting a League One side who've had a difficult start to the season on the pitch (great result last night, mind) and have experienced problems off the field recently, too.
So there's at least a fair chance of an upset, there's a two division gap between the clubs yet Eastleigh being a National League club have a ground that is almost certainly of a good enough standard broadcast-wise to stage a live game, while Swindon have one of the bigger followings in the lower leagues. This match would be my first pick. |

I don't think so, you can look back at the TV fixtures in previous seasons and the only time the "big" clubs have got on is genuinely when they've been playing absolute minnows, like Paulton vs Norwich or Histon vs Leeds. The only other time they've got on is when the draw has been so thin there aren't enough potential giant killings about. Indeed the only time I remember Forest being on TV in the Cup when they were in the lower leagues was in 2007 when they were on away to Chelsea in the fourth round, when there was a dreadful draw with all the big teams at home.

Why isn't the FA Cup first round played during the international break weekend? Maybe Sky insist on their window to show a quota of lower league games on these occasions but it's frustrating to see this great publicity opportunity missed every year.
