Forest's away game at Salisbury in the second round that season was live on the BBC.
Fair enough - but that was an obvious pick, and was picked for Salisbury as much as Forest.

Why isn't the FA Cup first round played during the international break weekend? Maybe Sky insist on their window to show a quota of lower league games on these occasions but it's frustrating to see this great publicity opportunity missed every year.
The most obvious reason is because the FA are also in charge of the England team, so they don't want their two competitions going at the same time. We saw that the other season when the first round was played during the international break, ITV had both and had to show the FA Cup highlights on Sunday morning rather than Saturday night, because England took priority. That was no advert for the Cup.

And also, there's no publicity to be had playing it when there's no other football. If it's played during a Premier League weekend, people tuning in to Soccer Saturday and Final Score for Premier League news and goals get FA Cup news as well. If it wasn't played during a Premier League weekend, they wouldn't tune in at all. The ratings for Soccer Saturday plummet when it's only the lower leagues playing. It means it's completely alone in the schedules and people don't stumble across it.

Plus there's also the potential for League One and Two (and maybe even lower) teams having to call off matches due to international call-ups. There were certainly a few in the last international break.

Sorry to everyone who's read this same argument in every FA Cup thread, every year.

Alferton Town v Newport County would be a good choice for TV anyway. It has not been confirmed for TV as Judio's post might suggest.

I know its not the reason but a 2 pm Sunday start gives a good idea that Final Score will be moving 8 matches to Sunday at 2

How do you know that's got anything to do with the floodlights? BT had a lunchtime slot and chose a match to fill it.

I'm surprised that BBC didn't go for the tie involving Salford City. Oh wait, they got knocked out in an earlier round! 😁

Southport v Fleetwood could be tasty as it's a local derby so to speak.

Interesting points made, I'd forgotten about the recent season when England played on the same day as the FA Cup first round.

I recall in the first few years of the Premier League the FA Cup first round took place on an international break weekend about five years out of six, which worked well for Match of the Day as it meant they could still broadcast their regular Saturday night highlights show (with holding the terrestrial FA Cup rights) and also meant the clubs playing in the FA Cup received more substantial coverage on the show than if the Premier League had played at the same time. With what is now the Championship in action on the same weekend (covered by ITV) it certainly had much more of a "proper Saturday" feeling than exists on international weekends today. For the reasons you've stated, I'm not sure playing the FA Cup on that weekend would work quite so well today.

A search through this website suggests I have said the same thing to the same poster on the same topic for the last three seasons. A grand FA Cup tradition. Anyway, you're right about how it happened in the nineties, although of course international breaks were a bit different in those days because 90% of international matches took place in midweek and the previous weekend's fixtures were called off to allow them to prepare, rather than to actually play a match.

It's also correct that MOTD continued as usual, although of course there were no live games on the BBC before the third round in those days. And it is a fact that casual fans won't tune in if there's no Premier League. This week's Broadcast includes the figures for the international weekend and Soccer Saturday got 226,900 viewers. The week before, it got 345,300, so it lost a third of its audience, and it was also in a shorter slot and had no Premier League football against part of it, as is usually the case. The live Football League games that weekend failed to make it in the Top 50 at all, so it's pretty obvious that people aren't just watching football for the sake of football.

I just hope you are never on a jury if I'm the defendant.
It's like a logic problem, this. All matches at grounds with crap floodlights have to be played at lunchtime. Man City are playing at lunchtime this weekend. Therefore, the Ettihad must have crap floodlights! Can be no other reason.

Interesting info on BBC's coverage of the second round draw:
Eilidh Barbour presents coverage as this weekend's first-round victors discover their opposition, knowing that one more win could secure a money-spinning tie against a Premier League side.
So does this mean then that BT will be hosting the FA Cup Draws this year? I take it BT will have live coverage of the second round draw during pre-match coverage of Southport V Fleetword.

I will just go back to the topic of the original post and say I think it is a terrible decision to get rid of Quarter Final replays as that was not the cause of any fixture congestion. I am also surprised that more people have voted yes on the poll, than no, and would like to ask what are their reasons for this? How far do you go to cut domestic matches down to make way for European matches?

Some West Ham supporters attend Southend, who often play Friday night games.

Millwall and West Ham hardcore nutters like to go the pub for a quiet drink together, curry and bingo...

once again i must say this, it was due to the F.A having a few issues with the champions league games that caused this change blame uefa

Crawley home to Bristol Rovers has been moved to a 1200 kick off

The reason is that they want to avoid the local fireworks display.

If some posters are unsure about this there is an article about it in the local Crawley Observer
