Kathy has mostly been seen as the weak and downtrodden character since she returned. We need to see more tough and strong again and have a better place within the square...more scenes with Shirley and Sharon and a big story that's serious |! Hope we see improvement soon!!

She is a bit of a drip at the moment and the Bobby plot isn't doing her any favours.

She certainly doesn't seem to have much conviction in her opinions. I mean, I know she'll feel forever guilty about all the time she choose to lose with her family, but, yeah, she's just 'there' atm. Just a bit waffley?

It's like she was brought back just for the Shock Return! ratings pull and then that's it.

She's like an older Sonia. So whiny and dry. I'm not a fan. She was interesting when she first came back and had Gavin on her tail. But since she settled back in she's become a really underwhelming character.

I'm just really enjoying the fact she's back at all! She's a great character with a lot of warmth.

And if you remember the drama she went through in to 80s and 90s - secret daughter turns up and dies, raped, marriage breakdown, marries an alcoholic, son has meningitis, affair with a vicar (that's just what I can remember off the top of my head) - it will be difficult to replicate that drama straight away. She needs time to bed in.

I don't know if the Buster affair is going to happen, but it'll be an interesting direction to take her character. Kathy was always a pretty moral character so seeing her as the other woman would be interesting. Other than that, I'm just enjoying seeing her on the square and making friends. Her relationship with Martin is especially good. Almost like she feels maternal towards him now Pauline is no longer around.

She's a bit of a drip, i agree. But she was under Gavin's control and hid in fear for nearly a decade, so she is still finding her confidence and trying to be Kathy again. Which i think is realistic.

I don't think she's ever been that tough, that's what I like about her we don't need another feisty female.

I expected her to become this take charge matriarch but even with Jane incapacitated Ian still doesn't need her. It's like she's not even there. Maybe she's a ghost...

Jane, Sharon and Martin are the only characters that she works anyway well with this time round which reinforces the argument that she was a character of her era. I don't expect they were anticipating Kathy's relationship with Ben to be such a flop which is probably why he shares more scenes with Sharon than opposed to her.

Maybe once Bobby is in juvvy and Jane is in prison the Beales could go back to being normal.

Kathy's grandchild is now in the square, I want her to actively be involved in his life. I also wish she had some contact with Lexie too.

Buster is just to drippy for Kathy, she needs someone with a bit of substance. Bring in Graham Cole as a new love interest.

I think that the motto of her return is "Be careful what you wish for". They go to all that trouble to bring back a dead character, and now seem to be at a loss as to what to do with her. Sometimes,it's just better to leave fondly remembered characters in their golden era.

Kathy works fine with Ben, the writers just don't pay enough attention to that relationship. She also works well with Martin and Sharon.

It's Ian she has a weird disconnect with this time round. That could be down to the plot-driven Bobby storyline. Kathy would never keep quiet whilst an innocent man rots in prison. She would've given Ian hell over it and told him to do the right thing. She isn't the only one OOC in this storyline but it sticks in the throat more with Kathy who had the strongest morals of any EastEnders character. Other characters involved have been suffering from dodgy writing for years so it's not as new for them.

There isn't an opening for a Beale family matriarch right now as the family is fractured and rarely gets any material outside of the plot-driven Bobby stuff. The show can't do anything else with them until they move beyond this plot.

I don't think Kathy works well with Ben at all, LHolmes. He barely seems to care that she's around. I agree she works really well with Martin (far better than either of her sons) along with Sharon and also Shirley but beyond that I've yet to see any justification for bringing Kathy back beyond the fact she's Kathy Beale. She surprisingly makes very little impact and is incredibly wishy washy. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad she's alive but I don't think we'd be missing out on much if she'd stayed dead. I'm struggling to think of any major impact she's had on any storyline since she returned. Even the story with Gavin ended up being about Sharon.

It doesn't exist. It was mistake but it's one the show is stuck with. Hopefully they can find a way to make it worth it. Sharon's re-entrance story-line was just as clunky but she's improved as time has gone on.

Even the story with Gavin ended up being about Sharon.
Gavin is just rubbish. At this point I wouldn't care if Kathy takes back Denny and then Gavin just vanishes in a puff of badly-written smoke. Pointless character.

Kathy is a new character. I mean, I know shes not really, but because of her length of absence, and the fact most younger / newer viewers won't know her, shes new.

People need to get used to characters before they are given big stories. Stacey was a gobby cow who got lighter stories for a couple years before Jean, STAX and bipolar. Claudette was Donna's step mum and friends of Pam & Les before her big stories started. The Masoods were hardly used for their first year. Once Kathy is embedded, Gavin nonsense is tied up, she'll take on a new life.

Last thing we want is another Derek Branning / Moon Brother who gets shoehorned into every scene and story

At least they spared us this

This version of Kathy is so wet. From the way she's reacted to Bobby attacking Jane, it's difficult to believe she is the same person at all.

BIB: See that for me doesn't mean she doesn't work well with him. All it means is the writers aren't giving their relationship due care and attention.

The snippets we have seen have felt natural, IMO, unlike a lot of the Kathy/Ian stuff. Like when she bought him that CD for his birthday and visited him at the Arches the other day with breakfast. Those small touches are nice but we need to see Kathy involved in the bigger stuff.

She started off well in the Abi stuff. Telling him to spend the night at Ian's after breaking it off with her which is what the old Kath would've done. But she was persona non grata when Ben found out about the non-baby and humiliated Abi. It's inconsistent.

Be intresting how Kathy takes to Steven.

Does anyone know if Kathy knows Steven isn't Ian?

Cant remember if Kathy knew, I think she did!

She is a background character as a nod to the obsession with the past but she won't be anything more

Kathy was either the first or second person find out. She overheard Cindy and Wicksy talking about it over the baby monitor - a device revisited when Tiffany found out about Grant sleeping with her mum. Michelle was also one of the first to find out.
