One of my favourite songs love it I wish they'd play more of these types of songs would make the whole show a bit more authentic IMO
Not that I'm against anything that would avoid spectacles like Boom Shake The Room, but I find it somewhat ironic when people argue that ballroom dancing needs authentic Latin music, given that, as far as I'm aware (which is admittedly not *very* far), most dancers from Latin America view the "Latin" arm of ballroom dancing as an awful inauthentic European bastardisation of authentic cultural forms, which is why you very rarely see anyone from Latin America actually compete at it.

you are right Monkseal - most of the latin dances in ballroom competitions are adaptations of the dances from latin america and most of them English/European in origin except jive and cha which are usa - even the Paso is not spanish but French in origin hence most of the steps for the dance in French 
I don't mind what music is used as long as tempo is right - we use modern music at the studio particularly for the kids particularly by DJ Ice which are great because they combine modern tracks with good tempo, that said I am firm believer that rumba and samba should really be danced to 'latin' music just fits the dance better - saying that how much better is this arrangement of Skyfall by DJ Ice than anything SCD does with modern rumbas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SITKlMhUEHQ

As someone who's hobby is listening to music and pairing it up with dances. Pop music has more scope and breath of dances than "traditional" latin music. Traditional Samba is African and Carnival Samba (often regarded by Brazilians as "Samba") and that music sounds nothing like Ballroom Samba. The Brazilians pour vitriol on YouTube comments on Sambas as they refuse to be educated the fact that Ballroom Samba is different.
Same goes for Argentine Tango. The Argentine Tango danced on Strictly and DWTS around the world is Tango Fantasia or Tango Salon often called Stage Tango or Show Tango. The Argentine Tango danced on the Streets in Argentina is different and Argentine Tango itself is spat on by Milonga dancers that hate that Argentine Tango has taken over the Milonga as the true Argentine national dance. There is a bitter dispute among those who say the Tango is Argentine or wether it is Uruguayan even the fact that the "Argentine" Tango is protected by UNESCO it was listed as Argentine and Uruguayan the Uruguayan Tango dancers hated the fact it was listed as Argentine. But the problem is Tango on its own refers to the European Tango or as we call it Ballroom Tango. There is another Tango called Finnish Tango but I don't know much about that.
But Argentine Tango has traditional music that is never used. Libertango by Astor Polizzia IS NOT TRADITIONAL TANGO. It was the first ever Tango Nuevo track a more Radio Friendly approach to Tango as the song is only 40 odd years old but because Astor was a bandoneon player the song is often regarded as Traditional as it is used ALL THE TIME in competitive Tango. I like traditional Tango songs but they can be jarring to some bands like Bajofondo, Tanghetto and Gotan Project thrusted Tango to the mainstream by fusing it with Electronic beats which I adore. But there are pop songs that are "Argentine Tango" I am talking about the Strictly/DWTS Argentine Tango.

Yes, I love that version of Skyfall! Dj Maksy also does great latin remixes of modern songs. It's not that difficult to take a song like skyfall and rumba-ize it. Not that I'm a musician, but strictly should be doing the bare minimum in making sure the time signature and tempo is correct for each dance.
Sadly strictly thinks that any song is a rumba if it's slow, moody and played on a piano.
A piece of music doesn't have to be 'old' to be right for dancing, whether ballroom or Latin. What is has to be is played at the correct tempo. There's a huge amount of really great modern music about that, when played by a 'proper' dance band/orchestra is perfectly suitable. A waltz that is a particular favourite of mine is Dances With Wolves, from the film of that name. I have it on a cd of ballroom music, and it is beautiful, whereas the soundtrack from the film would not be so suitable.
Unfortunately this is where strictly's band fails. They play the music as it is sung/played by pop musicians instead of adapting it to suit the dance. Whether that is their fault or the bbc's is debatable.
