Thought it was just cheap card tricks and over sentimental.

I didn't understand it at all. And the cynic in me thinks it's just a way to get people feeling patriotic and vote for him.

With all due respect, who was the old chap? Was he a relative or literally just a random war veteran?

I feel like I was being emotionally blackmailed into voting for him. I don't like magicians anyway, so it would have taken a lot to win me over.

He will still beat most other acts, just for standing there as a man in uniform. The act was rubbish.

He threw away the title with that. A Jamie Raven scale final trick would have put him in with a shout.

I thought the trick itself was very underwhelming and the rest was just sentimentality.

I think you may be right. It was contrived and mawkish. I'm not into this 'all soldiers are wonderful' schtick. And he messed up the trick.

It was boring and why did he bring that pensioner out at the end they treated him like royalty.

I'm a fan (not of this performance mind you) as my posting history will attest, but it really was "I used to be a soldier, my brother is a soldier, I'm talking about a soldier and hey here he is: the soldier! Now' I'll put on my soldier hat and stand with some soldiers."

I turned the tv over and was watching the Bermuda Philharmonic Orchestra,
and half way through the bloke on the triangle disappeared.

I actually liked the simplicity of the trick but it was quite underwhelming for the final. It would be totally in keeping for the RVS but he needed to pull out all the stops here.
