Yes because of course in the fantasy world of Brexiteers, Britain won the second world war all on its lonesome. No international collaboration was involved in any form whatsoever. And for that matter its origins had nothing whatsoever to do with rampant nationalism. Well I am glad we have all learned some valuable political lessons from BGT.

I think he just did an 'Attraction'. Winning based on his audition, the momentum was just too much to beat. He was fave to win until the running order tried to screw him over.

The fact that Brexit has managed to be dragged into the BGT final is very funny though. No doubt Simon will be pleased as it makes the show seem very topical.

Shameless manipulation of an elderly war hero. It leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.

You're assuming he was incapable of refusing to go on. If anything I'll bet he was proud to be on the show; being a British soldier is nothing to be ashamed of or something to hide.

It was indeed quite a canny idea for him to target the Britain First, Daily Mail reading Brexit idiots. Just the kind of people that vote in these shows.
Judging by the comments on the Mail Online, their audience switched out years ago horrified by inappropriate for family viewing glimpses of Amanda Holden's side boobs or Alesha Dixon's nou-nou or too many dancing sluts writhing around at tea time.

This is what's frightening about the referendum vote - people who think like you. There are quite a number of reasons and issues to stay or leave and people like you who have obviously not done any research are showing your ignorance with comments like this.

I thought it was super smart of him to put that act on.

End of the day this is a competition he wanted to win. Just like Jules last year played on the 'ah' vote by having a three legged dog.

He played to the current feelings of patriotism.

End of the day, it worked and he's 250k better off!

Guffaw! The day I turn to Simon Cowell for political guidance will be a cold day in hell.

Well done to you for showing why we should vote out.... A WW1 soldier who fought to keep Britain British...... And shows what the people of Britain think......the comments from the judges also shows where their loyalties lie.......vote BREXIT..... Keep Britain British !!!
Haha as much as I agree about voting to leave the EU, I think what struck a chord with people was the sentimental and emotional factors of the performance more than anything. It was also a nice array of tricks too, if not quite as good as his semi-final performance (which was amazing!).

Are there "current feelings of patriotism", any more than at any other time - other than among the likes of the Britain First-type morons (which hardly count as they're just xenophobia)?

The act had NOTHING to do with Brexit, although Simon Cowell made some subtle comments on voting to remain. It probably went right over the heads of leave voters though (unsurprisingly).

SImon Cowell doesn't know the meaning of 'subtle'. Pushing either agenda in a talent contest is entirely inappropriate.

Ugh, I know this is a semi-joke thread, but I've actually seen some tub-thumping, flag-waving posts on Facebook using videos of Richard's act to push Brexit.

People who vote in are cowards afraid of change......if it goes wrong it goes wrong, but it cannot be any worse than its going to get by staying in
Or we enjoy the many benefits of being in the EU. Your post is almost as bad as the opposite argument that those who want out are xenophobes.

To be fair, I think quite a few in the Brexit camp think they're magicians.

This ^^^

Calculated, obvious, rabble-pleasing stroke of cynical PR. Yuck.

I thought this was a talent show. Silly me.

BIB - I doubt it was his idea. It screams Simon Cowell to me.

For crying out loud! Is there anything that Brexit voters can't twist round to their agenda? It was a talent show, ffs. If there's one thing convincing me to vote in, it's the amount of obsessive and unhinged people trying to convince me to vote out. It's also very insulting to a WWII veteran that you feel you can speak for him about what he thinks of the EU.

Only the no borders leftie workshy haters of all things good will be voting to remain. The scruffy proles will be begging for their lives in twenty years time, but tough - comply with Shari'a or die.

We warned you.
