The whole reason we joined a united Europe in the first place was because of the two World Wars.
It was seen as a preventative measure against future rises of nationalism that had caused such devastation. To use the British army is a tool for the Brexit campaign is just ignorant. Check your history people. |

You're assuming he was incapable of refusing to go on. If anything I'll bet he was proud to be on the show; being a British soldier is nothing to be ashamed of or something to hide.
He, Fergus Anckorn, aged 97, was on stage because he was a magician who had inspired Richard Jones. He had fought in the Second World War in the Far East, against Japan, and been held prisoner by the Japanese. The article ends: Quote:
Magic almost certainly saved him, he said. His first trick for the commandant at Ubon (POW camp) involved making one of the commandant’s coins disappear and then reappear in a tin of fish. He was allowed to take the fish away afterwards because the Japanese “wouldn’t touch anything that we’d touched”. Incidentally, Richard Jones is a Corporal. I noticed at one point Ant, I think it was, addressed him as "Sergeant". Ant, Dec and everyone else might have been desperately avoiding referring to him as Corporal Jones which would have triggered memories of Corporal Jones in Dad's Army.
“The next time I went, I looked round and there were some bananas, so I did magic with some bananas. I was doing tricks with anything that would give me vitamins.” Mr Anckorn said he was proud to have supported Mr Jones. “I didn’t realise the whole of his act was singing my praises because he’d heard about me and it was that which got him interested in magic. I’ve been on lots of shows. But it’s the most exciting one. I’ve never had an audience of 14 million.” |

I think the act would have been more appropriate for a returning champion, rather than someone still competing.
I don't think even his most stalwart fans would argue that he won on the strength of his magic in that final act. |

Considering he was a magician I think he could have performed the "reveal" of the trick by showing an empty box and then the war hero could have appeared in it at the end or something, but he was just behind the curtain
Overall I found his act disappointing.
