What's happened to it? We rarely ever see it anymore.

Jamila house? Naz was doing something in it a few weeks ago wasn't she?

Pat Phelan broke into it a few weeks ago and then fixed the damages and got paid for it.

Does anyone know who pays the rent, council tax, insurance, maintenance etc on the centre?

Pointless set.

Corrie has tried to have a community centre on more than one occasion and it has never really worked.

They had one for nearly 20 years- during the 70s and 80s. It was actually used quite a bit. Ena Sharples was the caretaker and in later years Percy Sugden.

I think we should see the community centre more often, there is so much scope for different activities and events that could take place there. I'd like to see corrie move with the times and gradually expand this set, making it the focal meeting point for characters as opposed to the Rovers.

Sorry Street Fan, it was rarely used at all. It had its heyday soon after it opened in 1971 where it was the venue for community events (things like a youth club, dance classes, a flower show among others) as well as hosted a number of parties/wedding receptions but aside from that it was always a white elephant and a wasted set.

From Ena Sharples's departure in 1980 until its demolition in 1989 it only featured in a handful of episodes.

It was one of the lesser used sets admittedly. But,I do remember a number of stories from the 80s. IIRC,Fred Gee and wife Eunice lived there for a while. The Christmas eps in 82 featured a Dance there with most of the regulars. Then Percy's arrival in 83. I think that Annie Walker's final eps were at a Fayre there? I remember a Valentine's Dance there in 85 and a series of Tea Dances with the older characters in 87. Oh,and also the Council Elections when Deirdre beat Alf. There may be others, but those spring to mind. It was probably used more in the 70s. Even though it probably wasn't used as much as it may have been,I thought it was a useful set for Shows,Parties and Community events. I suppose in the days when they were restricted to 5 sets per ep.,they didn't use it unless there was no other alternative. I suppose it may also have been one of the bigger sets, and that was also a consideration. BTW,always enjoy your posts KornerKabin. It's great to come across others with a good knowledge of the previous eras of the show,

It is something for old ma Nazir to be seen doing when she is not nagging her husband or any other member of her family or trying to annoy Sally.

Yes, and in fact it was quite useful in various storylines. But then again, they had writers in those days...

The problem is it's only a tiny little shop and there really isn't space for any kind of events. In the past the Rovers used to have a "room" where weddings, etc. were held. That was far more realistic. Nowadays even when weddings and wakes are (inevitably) held in the Rovers the festivities take place in the bar.

Good point, it's more of a community room really, Is there anyway it could be extended, what's next door to it?

Thanks for replying, not really an option to expand it then.

Would they be better getting rid of the Medical Centre as it is hardly used, put the Community Centre in there, bigger building, more scope to do stuff.

If they still want a Medical Centre, then move that into what is now the Community Centre, much more realistic, for what is needed.

That's a good idea, the medical centre looks really rundown and horrible, is it even used anymore?

If its too small for a community centre, then it would be way too small for a medical centre.

I would like it if the community centre led to new characters being introduced so maybe them going to an evening class and meeting some regulars and becoming part of the show

I agree, moving it to the Medical Centre would be a great idea. It could introduce some recurring characters, but please can they not move to the street! We can still have characters that interact with the members of the street, visit the cafe, Bistro, shop etc, but not everyone has to move in to the street!
