How many more bloody songs are going to be bastardised like this?

A song slowed down and played on a guitar or piano with a female vocalist singing it in a sort of "i'm bored and tired and I'm about to nod off" kind of way.

It's on every other advert now and it's driving me mad.

It really is the worst I particularly hate the version if 'True Colours' which is already a delicate song when Cyndi Lauper sings it but she makes it sexy and quirky, the new version just sounds wimpy and pathetic and somehow even slower like she doesn't really care about the person they are singing about at all and would rather have a nap.

Yes it's awful

Black's Wonderful Life is another example.

I look at it this way.

All these 'remixes' of Fast Car take the poignancy and emotion out of the lyrics and add some inane electronic 'tune' but that may lead to some people going to listen to Tracy Chapman's absolutely brilliant original! ( same for True Colors).

Lily Allen is guilty of doing this often.

I think Eva Cassidy started it.

I'm in two minds over this (well, I'm more 80/20 about it lol) . I actually liked Gabrielle Aplin's cover of The Power Of Love. It was more atmospheric compared to the majority of these female vocal ballads that appear around the same time as X Factor. What a co-incidence.

For me, the absolute worst was AURORA's mind numbingly dull version of Half The World Away. That really was the musical equivalent of watching paint dry.

Blame John Lewis. They spend millions on their annual Christmas advertising campaign and insist on having a big overblown ballad as its soundtrack.

But then a good hundred thousand go and download the song on iTunes which just encourages John Lewis to do it all over again 12 months later.

I did quite like one of these off an advert.........but I can't remember which one it was.......

On a similar vein I used to watch the SyFy series Defiance which was vastly under-rated........they used to have sections where songs would play instead of dialogue for poignant or violent scenes......

One that stuck in my mind was a woman singing a slowed down version of Jimi Hendrix's Hey Joe.........I think this is pretty good, though maybe it was much better in the context of the show rather than as a stand alone

Everything Changes by Take That used in a furniture ad. A song that has been slowed down to within an inch of its life.

I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor has been slowed down by a male vocalist this time which makes a change but it has ruined a great disco classic. I can't remember what advert it's from but it's being sung by a dog.

Male singers are also guilty of this, insipid, style...

Rip out his vocal chords

About 32 seconds in, ugh.

This one is particularly disgusting.

The trend infected talent shows as well.

Another one I remember is a male singer doing a drippy ballad version of You're The One That I Want from Grease

Another fine example of destroying a happy uplifting feel good song and turning it into a slow depressing funeral song.

When did this trend start? It's been happening for a few years. I wonder if Simon Cowell is responsible for all this?

I watched Ian Hislop's documentary about Beethoven's Fifth Symphony the other night.......and the conductor who co-featured was saying that a trend developed through the 19th century and up to now to play the symphony really slow.........and he wants to get back to what he believed the original intention was - to play it fast !

So slowing down is probably quite old !........

I really hate these drippy, X Factor'd covers. The one I hate the most is when Sam Feldt murdered Robin S's Show Me Love last year. Just awful.

I guess these adverts reflect current popular music trends (ie What sells). Sad times we live in.

What I find annoying is when they use well known recordings and miss bits out.
With most tunes there's usually a couple of bars used as a link between choruses, but sometimes, these are cut out. So subconsciously you could be "singing along" with the tune and it's as if the "record" has jumped.

Maybe Benjamin Zander: https://youtu.be/wGWzmst0R7E?t=3m27s

He says in his introduction that he wants the record company to put a warning on his CDs "please do not use whilst driving" because his version is so fast.

The absolute worst is Sherzinger doing a god awful version of I Want You Back by the Jackson 5. It sets my teeth on edge everytime I hear it.

Ah, but when the talent show singers copy the advert version, they are 'making it their own'.

Apparently.

A few years ago knock on wood by ami Stewart relieved similar treatment on an advert. Slowed down and containing none of the heavy production that the 1979 original had. Still gets played I think.

Amii Stewart's version is a cover. The song has been around since the 60s.

Even David Bowie did a version of this song a few years before Amii's

It's a Stax classic, by Eddie Floyd. Co-written by him and the legendary Steve Cropper.
