Like it's not been discussed behind close doors already! Really?”
Talk is cheap, and this sounds like lip service to me. I'm beyond frustrated with EE's commitment to showing LGBT characters in prominent relationships. They just don't seem to care. There have been so many highly regarded LGBT relationships and storylines on TV this year and yet the most EE could come up with was a relationship between Ben and Paul that began with Ben going back on the closet, a cliched pregnancy scare, all the worst stereotypes about gay men and STIs, and ended up with one of them dead, a few brilliant and searing episodes exploring the impact on Ben, Les and Pam, before reverting it back to a farcical Mitchell revenge plot. I'm not even going to bother discussing Sonia/Tina, an absolute insult to lesbian relationships.
They really could have had something special with Johnny and Steven but they decided we'd rather watch Lauren and Steven bickering and sniping with each other and nothing about the circumstances in which they got together making much sense, all the while expecting us an audience to invest in them.
If Pete Lawson really thinks Johnny and Steven are an interesting idea then he should be beating down SOC's door to push it. If I was a writer on EE that was remotely interested in LGBT issues, I'd be ashamed at the current status of the gay characters on the show.
