I think its kind of fascinating how when Clarkson re-launched Top Gear with having a studio audience standing around them, I remember he said got the idea from TGI-Friday and many years later Top Gear has also got the host of TGI-friday.

Don't think much of the quality of guests so far. I wonder if any are snubbing it? Will be particularly interested to see if Coogan and Jay Kay show up - Coogan as he's a mate of Chris's and stuck the knife in after the JC fracas, and JK to get himself back on the top of the leader board with the new car.

You lost all credibility by suggesting that a great Skoda can be cooler or better than a Ferrari ... sorry .


Plus I for one LOVE the new format surrounding a star driving whatever they're driving - wherever they're driving it .

It's just more interesting than watching someone drive around a boring tarmac track in a 900cc Vauxhall Nova ( or whatever - I'm sure you'll correct me ) .

I'll keep my eye out for series one , episode one of the old Top Gear .

I think it's obvious that 2002 Top gear copied Chris Evans' TFI Friday show.....and Chris Evans copied other shows like The Word and the Tube....

To be honest...and with hindsight...serious car review shows are just pointless....because there's only time to review one car at a time...when there may be 6 or 7 very similar cars that potential people might be interested in buying.

There is still room in the schedules for a 'car show' where the presenters just muck around in cars....

And in that respect...Chris Evans is far more 'Top Gear' that Jeremy Clarkson is or was.

So yes, the whole thing has come full circle...and we now have the perfect mucking around car show...the one we've all been waiting for.....

Once the Jermy Clarkson fans get bored and go back to trolling gay people and deaf people...or whatever they used to do before trolling Top Gear....we can all get on and watch the worlds most entertaining car show.

It wasn't as bad as some are making out, a brand new format at the time with JC and RH pretty much carrying it on their own, Jason Dawe was not a big part of it from what I remember. My main memory of it was that it was very new territory for a car show, experimental maybe.

Series 2 when May joined and it started to feel a better balance.

Extra gear could not be as bad as the main show because CE wasn't hosting it!!

Well im watching the repeat right now and i have to say that it is not bad Maybe we just have to get used to the new presenters because we got so used to the old presenters. So i think it will take time to get used to the new changes of the show

You might LOVE a celeb wobbling round a topsoil track, but again you miss the point of SIARPC, where a car with enough power allowed drivers of any abilities to push themselves to the limit without being overawed. Put a celeb in a Scooby Doo and the likeliest outcome is an off. Put one in a G-Whiz and everybody's time will be identical. That's why a Cee'D, or an Astra, or the old Liana, did the trick. A Works Cooper on loose a surface? As someone noted the first pair were 15s apart in perfect conditions. And the Amercian celeb was absolutely pitiful;. If that lights your candle, good luck.

Nope, you still don't get it do you? Everyone agrees that the first series wasn't good. It was a relaunch, a whole new concept and a complete change from what TG had been prior to being canned. On top of that Clarkson & Wilman had wanted May from the off but were told by management that three white middle class blokes wasn't the right mix, so they had Dawes almost forced on them. It's all documented in various books by different people who were involved. By the second series May was on board and the ideas & format had started to take shape. That's what happens when you try something brand new from a standing start - it needs to gel & build

When you have that 16 years experience to fall back on and end up making a colour me by numbers clone that misses the mark so badly, it's not gonna wash using s1 ep1 of Prev TG to try & gloss over the new one's shortcomings.

Odd how just two - ColinWill and MichPlat - are so rigorously defending the new version, where most of the rest of the world - Twitter, press reviews, motoring web forums, here, everywhere I look in fact, has looked at it and said strewth Evans lighten up, and work on the content and context. Odd.

Sorry Colinwill, I'd ask for you to shut the **ck up with you assumptions about people that A) prefer old Top Gear, & B) quite like the way that CHM present things.
Suggesting that people that do, also enjoy trolling gay people & deaf people is rather offending.
Why don't you grow up a bit and realise that enjoyment is a completely subjective thing that doesn't have to have anything to do other aspects of people lives.
I happen to find Donald Trump to be an immensely entertaining guy but at the same time he is a massive fu*kwit that I'd have no time for in real life.
If you could now go back to whatever you did before people had the audacity to say that they don't like the new Top Gear & the reasons for it, we can all get on with watching what was the worlds most entertaining car show either improve or go down the pan.

Sat and watched ep2 of series one on youtube yesterday and even though it was a brand new show, only one episode in, it was still a much better product than what we saw last week. I think the difference is that on series one the bulk of the ideas were in place but the finesse just wasn't there. The audience wasn't in the right places, the room looked too bright and empty & they moved from place to place while recording.
The later series used the darker hanger, used the audience in a much better way & used multiple takes to move the presenters from one scene to another so that the audience could be in place for the next area.
Yes the budget was not there for them to do anything ridiculous but it felt like the peripherals needed tweaking rather than the main items, needed to polish the rough edges. The new version seems to have messed with the peripherals that were fine and they now get in the way of the show, whilst also changing the main items just enough to make them jar with the pre-existing audience while the newcomers and the occasional viewers don't really notice the difference.

I think it's clear that Colin & Mich are both on a wind-up. Be enthusiastic if you must, but to LOVE the rally-x feature after one quite dreadful 'shout for your favourites, kids' episode that was just so lacking in everything, or to call the new version 'the perfect car show'?

I'm not convinced by either of these pair. Trying too hard maybe? Have some kind of investment in it? Whatever, it doesn't wash, what they say and how they say it.

I've noticed when flicking through twitter a lot of the positive comments have been coming from people that didn't really watch TG before or steadfastly refused to do so because they didn't like JC. There also seemed to be a larger proportion of female tweeters saying they enjoyed this version either more or as a first time viewers.

Yesterday I also got a general email from applause store yesterday offering tickets for TG for the next 2 recordings! TG always had a big waiting list for people to go and watch it. Historically I had an email sent to me as someone on the list offering tickets, but this was just a general mailing to all applause store members offering TG, League of Their own and others.
Either the bigger audience is a struggle to fill or people are just not interested in going to see it live now.

At one point the waiting list for TG audience tickets was 9 years. If you're being offered tickets for this series then something is seriously wrong.

New TG is going to attract a new TV audience - R2 listeners, women, people who don't like Clarckson. Sadly it's going to alienate a lot of the old audience and I doubt the new audience will stick with it for long.

well Im shocked by this thread,the people who disliked Clarkson love this version and the people who loved Clarkson don't really like it ..... I suppose how long it lasts will depend if Evans has more casual watchers who will tolerate him and hardcore fans who will watch it anyway

It's a bit simplistic to claim that the dislike is because some of us are apparently so in hoc to Clarkson that anything or anyone else is automatically no good. Please credit us with a bit of intelligence - the new version got off to a very shaky start; the reasons & conclusions are well covered in this thread. It's not a simple No Clarkson = No Good; it's because the programme was quite poor, given the hype, the build-up and the time they've had to do it. A year, and they come up with a poor tribute act doing TG?

For the nth time - if new TG works I'll be fine with it but it's not good enough to downgrade it to a childrens show with bright lighting, whooping & a-hollering and primary colours all led by a shouty bloke who believes that squawking a lot makes up for a well-written introduction. Lack of CHM isn't the biggest problem, it's that the idea that TG would return bigger better and fresher hasn't been fulfilled and instead we've lost TG. Evans' version currently isn't a patch on what it was and what it could be despite a year to work out how to do it, and GT also won't be Top Gear.
