I'm not going to carry-on going round in circles. I've been having a 'grown-up discussion' here for several months. I've stated my position several times and my views haven't changed. We'll have to agree to disagree but if you think the CE TG series struggled for ratings purely because it was below par then I believe you're mistaken and IMO there are a lot of other factors involved. You only have to have read this board when the first show went out or when CE resigned to see the depth of feeling. Or look at Twitter. Or read the numerous comments on all the newspaper articles. Or just talk to people.

There *are* people who do not think the BBC should have let Clarkson go irrespective of his actions in the fracas. Plenty of people have said they wouldn't watch because without CHM it wasn't Top Gear. Plenty of others said they wouldn't watch if CE was doing it. No doubt some people in these groups did tune in at the beginning of the series out of curiosity but, of course, the shows were never going to keep those people, they simply weren't good enough. Hence ratings continued to fall.

Personally I've never been in any of the 'haters' camps. My emphasis has been on wanting TG to survive, whoever is presenting it. Check my previous posts. Anyway, I shall probably leave it there now until the next series, assuming there will be one.
My impression reading this thread is that while some posters did say they'd never watch Top Gear without CHM presenting it, and some said they couldn't stand CE presenting it many, possibly most, said they'd give the new show a chance. Thus the opening ratings weren't that far down. You can attribute that drop to the "not without CHM" and "not with CE" groups. That left a substantial group of viewers giving the new show a chance. As you say the quality was poor so week by week more people decided not to bother watching.

I'm well aware of the social media comments thanks, though suggesting I "just talk to people" is harsh to say the least. If you read my post carefully it's clear the critics I referred to were professional TV critics who review from an objective POV, not the general public who are more subjective.

Yes of course there are people who wish CHM were back on the BBC and wouldn't watch Top Gear without them in it. There are also people who would not watch anything with CE presenting it. I didn't say there weren't. But those aren't the only reasons for the show getting bad reviews and poor ratings. I would argue they aren't the main reasons either, given the ratings evidence.

Daily Mail reporting today that Matt LeBlac is to return as the lead presenter of Top Gear, just a few minor contractual details to finalise first.

I am quite a new viewer of Top Gear (started with series 19) and want to catch up with what I missed. I have started getting the series DVDs, I've got 10,11,13,14 and they were all about £9 each, but I want season 12 and at the same place I got the others it's £26. Why is this season so much more expensive than the others?

Quite surprised that nearly 2hrs after this was published no one had posted about it, but MLB has been confirmed for 2 more series along side Rory & Chris with Sabine & Eddie making occasional appearances too. Maybe it's a sign of how much people are still interested in Top Gear!

Putting Rory and nice Chris 'up front' should work really well. I think if it doesn't work out next time it will be the fault of MLB.

Fingers crossed.

MLB as main host should work out well. In the last series he was good in most of the filmed inserts but looked increasingly uncomfortable in the studio besides CE. With CE gone hopefully he will relax a bit. The other Chris and Rory deserve a bigger role in the main show I think so it remains to be seen how they interact with Matt. I wish them luck!
Haven't decided yet whether to fork out for Amazon Prime so I can watch GT - hopefully it will turn up on a regular tv channel eventually, Dave maybe?

Wait for all episodes to air, then take up the month free trial!

You can pay for Prime monthly now can't you? Personally, I find it good value because I order a lot from Amazon (tempting with free delivery!) and now watch an awful lot of TV on Amazon too.

Wait for all episodes to air, then take up the month free trial!
Good tip!

I think this will be fine. We saw a taster of it in the last episode of Extra Gear which had Matt, Chris, Rory and Sabine chatting away together, laughing and joking very naturally. There seemed to be some chemistry and the banter came across as genuine.

They're bound to feel that much more comfortable in each other's company anyway with the first series under their belts. No doubt the producers will have seen the camaraderie developing and removing Mr Evans' ego from the equation will clearly help matters given everything that's been said in the wake of series 1.

Does anyone else think that, with hindsight, that the BBC should have just sold the TG rights to CMH/Amazon? It seems to me that they basically are the show; it's about three bickering, immature friends who indulge in their car fantasies.
